Owning a 360 was the impulsive thing to back in 2006 when the games started rushing out for it. The problem is that now in the US in general:
1) People don't know how good the PS3 exclusive games are or even know that they are good.
2) They are satisfied with Halo, CoD, Madden, GTA, and other third party games so they could care less if the PS3 had very good games, even if one of those games was "perfect game"
3) Since the Xbox 360 user base was established first and grew very large, a lot more people game on live rather than PS3. In additions, friends and friends of friends, are most likely to have live so to play on live they need an Xbox 360. Pretty simple stuff. I also believe that if the majority did have the choice today and were to start off fresh, they would pick the free service over the costly one because both systems have the most popular games (also with the PS3 your getting a blu-ray player/wi-fi - the 360 didn't have at launch).
People tend to argue with me that a lot of people with 360s in the US choose the Xbox 360 with knowledge of the exclusive ridden PS3 library because they prefer the Xbox 360 library. My argument is that most don't know about the games and don't care about anything but the most popular games and motion controls. We are dealing with general gamers here that don't follow gaming news, they follow hype/word of mouf, commercials, and long lasting franchises.
