No developer quite does shock and awe as well as Epic. The demo we saw for Gears of War 3 was a brilliantly twisted showcase of ripped-off limbs, rampaging Lambent and a game world significantly more lush and alluring than we've seen in this franchise before.

But this was more than just spectacle for its own sake; this was actually a very cleverly constructed whistle-stop tour of many of the game's new features. Producer Rod Fergusson points out that in the first 30 seconds of the demo there were eight new features on show. Time is at a premium on the Microsoft stage, and the developer was determined to make it count with a sequence of increasingly spectacular moments.
