Michael Pachter Clarifies His “This is the Last Generation of Consoles” Statement

Video game and electronics research analyst of Wedbush Securities, Michael Pachter, once famously predicted that the generation of consoles we’re currently in, consisting of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, & Wii U, would be the last for the industry and was just as famously called-out as being dead wrong from gamers aplenty.

Well, the quote he made in the past has come up again, this time on episode 8 of his show Pachter Factor, when he took the opportunity to clarify his statement.

“You know, I have probably misstated this in the past. I’ve called this the last console cycle. I don’t think this is the last time Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo make a console. I think this is the last and most successful console cycle. The next one will come; it won’t be as successful. The next one after that will come and it won’t be as successful as the next one. And they’ll just keep diminishing because I don’t think there’s a reason to upgrade.”

Because the topic of discussion had to do with the future of a console’s graphical power and Pachter doesn’t believe the graphical leap between this console generation and the next one won’t be all that significant, Pachter gave an example to explain his reasoning for why consumers won’t upgrade:

“If all you do on your PC is word-processing, do you really need to upgrade your microprocessor? And the answer is no, you don’t, and you won’t. I mean a 3.5 gigahertz CPU is plenty fast for word-processing. None of us can type as fast as that thing can process, so what’s the point? I think that’s what happens with consoles.”

Talk about making a prediction after the fact.

I dont see consoles slowing down.

The console market as a whole will contract from the highs of the PS3/Xbox 360/Wii days, but I think it will continue to be a hugely profitable niche that won't be going anywhere for the foreseeable future.

Didn't this idiot say that PS4 will run games at 240 frames per second? Yeah, mods should encourage people to stay away from anything related to Mr. Pachter, just like VGcharts and kdramasters.

I'm glad this isn't where he makes the bulk of his money, cos he's kinda shit with regards to watching the gaming market. I can't say I overtly disagree with his new point, but when you need the feel the need to clarify -- and change -- your original point, then it wasn't worth making.

Weshush Securities analyst Michael Pachter is almost always wrong, and frequently makes crack pot statements to get attention. This is a man who not so long ago denounced game streaming as a terrible experience and a failure, and now champions it as the future that will take down consoles. We have heard this song and dance before, and game consoles aren't going anywhere.

Yeah agreed... they might change form slightly but there'll be consoles for the foreseeable future.

He hasn't met people that argue day and night over 1080p, 1440p, and 4K yet...... don't even get me started on frames per second.

People will always find reasons to want to purchase and upgrade the best and latest.

VR and 4k will give gamers plenty of reason to upgrade.

Well if the next console generation sells one less than this generation he will be correct...what an accomplishment...

The guy is a tool that just spits out nonsense. I do wish this was the last generation and all development moved to PC, but that is not going to happen. As long as there are companies that like to control everything and charge royalties, there will be consoles with exclusives or some type of closed game service. We should all be pushing for the open platform of PC.

Pahcter is a freaking joke. He is always wrong. Games will continue to evolve, as PC evolves in architect console's will too. Mobile is doing to die more than anything, because it was a one hit wonder like the Wii. His remark is nothing related to gaming. Sure, a low end processor can handle an application like a word processor like cake. But games take more powerful hardware.

I personally think the Console and PC market will continue on strongly for years to come. When companies go completely mobile is when I draw the line. I frigging hate touch screens. Give me a Controller or K+M. Nothing else! I feel like I should be paid just as much as Pachter for this comment. Intel, Nvidia, AMD will continue to rake in the money. How does this idiot stay employed?

This guy is wrong basically all the time with his predictions so the best bet is to always go with the opposite of what he says.

How can I take anyone seriously who makes such an asinine comment? This is quite possibly one of the worst analogies I've seen in a long time. Give me this man's job, for if spouting such nonsense is a qualifier, I can do it, as can everyone in here.

He predicted Xbone to beat PS4. and look at how that went. lol
