Dorian Bloch, GfK Chart-Track director, expects the digital download market for PC to be worth over $1 billion in 2009 thanks to services like Direct2Drive, Steam, and Metaboli.

Bloch estimates the market accumulated close to $600 million last year, with publisher's relishing the idea of including sales number's in GfK Chart-Track's data.

"This is a huge business," said Bloch at Develop. "The key thing for me in this is that these publishers support me in what I do and they want their sales included in the charts.

That's 67% growth, year-over-year, people. More than offsetting the dying retail space. :)

What? Halo 3 didn't make close to that much money in revenue, and certainly not in profit.

Yeah, I'm a big part of the increase this year - I bought maybe half a dozen cheap games off Steam last year. This year, due to weekend deals and other things, I've spent over $300 already. And I haven't bought a retail PC game in years.

Cool, so that's just the digital download market, pretty nice :) (and I am not sure but seems not all publishers are included in this , so it could be even higher )

Which is kinda sad for me... I only buy games that are physical copies, I never buy DD only and if retail ever dies out I'll probably stop PC gaming (I'll still play the old games and maybe acquire the new games *cough* the other way *cough*)

hardly surprising, I haven't bough a retail game since about October last year. With every new game now on steam/impulse/d2d there is little reason to buy retail, especially when the nz retail market is so dam expensive. $40 - $50us on steam for most game while retail is $100-$120nz ($65-$80us at current exchange) Whenever I go into eb games I laugh at the pathetic selection of pc game, only new game available and they only have like 1 copy of any non rts. At the current rate it wont be long till eb just gives up on all but the big name pc games.
