PC gamer being honest about the inconsistencies of PC gaming.

So I've gotten flack on this board a few times, not naming names of who....about how my performance in so and so game isn't as good another person.

I've seen others as well as I get hermit bashed by the mere mention that high performance hardware isn't always all it's cracked up to be....one way or the other.

But this person speaks the truth....PC gaming is inconsistent. Is it worth it? That's up to the individual. In the 20's I spent sometimes hours trying to get PC games to work. I will say that PC gaming since about 2009 has come leaps and bounds from where it was. For about 2009-now....I've had few issues compared to the past.

But those problems are still there and anyone can have them at any point in time.

Just find it quite humorous that 99% of the hermits here never bring this up. This guy is a PC gamer and he's stating these facts.

Well, i don't spend hours to run the games ....i mean you simply download it , install, then play :D

Once most PC games support Xbox Achievements, I will replace Xbox One gaming with PC gaming for good. Optimization will never be as good on PC as it is on consoles. But I am trying my damndest to brute force my way to 1440p and good frame rates. 30fps sucks and gamers shouldn't have to settle for that. Jaggies and PS2 textures are another. And with VR coming real soon we are going to see the consoles fall behind even further. I will always love console gaming, but the power insuffiencies are starting to take their toll on us enthusiast.

I remember on Windows 98 and XP would have issues, but its rare to get issues now.

It is a small con to all the perks that an open platform brings, in my opinion. You can't have all this openness without a level of inconsistency.

That being said, if you little tolerance for this and want everything to be sort of simple, just game on consoles.

I'm glad you feel that is a fact.

Games crash and have problems on consoles too. Some are game breaking bugs. I remember Skyrim would slow to near 0 frames per second on PS3. Not sure if that ever got fully fixed.

I have met the incredibly rare problem on my PC, but it often requires little more than a 2 minute download and a restart. I think I've had to fix two games in my life. Now it's all automated anyways.

PC is definitely more complicated to maintain than a console, and there are a lot of troglodytes out there, but I have zero issues with PC gaming. Some games will give me some performance issues that I'll work a bit to smooth out, but I love having that option there. Take the PS4 and its best game, Bloodborne. That game has spectacularly awful performance, the kind that would make me upgrade my graphics card if I couldn't fix the performance issues through tweaks. But I can't do anything about it, it will just run terribly and that's all that there is to it. I like having the ability to tinker and fix that issue, an issue I care about quite a bit.

Also you should kill this "hermit" thing. It's not working for you.

Well lazy devs are on all platforms. Obviously if PS4 can run Second Son it can run Bro Force.

Thing is there's no way to test all factors on PC....not so on consoles. So we know they lazy devs.

There can be both. But when you can't figure out how to get your GTX 680 to run games above 900p, the problem is probably on your end

Hardest time i ever had running a pc game was Ultima 7 back in 1992. You had to run the game in conventional memory which was limited compared to extended memory... and if you wanted the game to have sound also, it used even more which made it almost impossible to do. Only way I was able to get enough memory was running a really efficient mouse driver that spared enough memory for the game to run with sound. The driver was called ctmouse.exe and i still have it incase i ever want to run the game again in pure dos mode on my old pc.

Games now adays are so easy to run, if you can't figure it out you shouldn't own a pc... because since the invention of the internet, finding solutions to problems is very easy for almost anything.

The person who wrote that pc gamer article was probably a console owner.

Well. This is why PS4 is inconsistent. It runs Second Sun, but can't run a 2d game such as BroForce....pretty much this is the definition of inconsistency on PS4 even though you "can test all factors" on it.

I'd say with utmost certainty that most problems are user error, lack of maintained file systems, lack of properly cleaning and installing drivers etc, like a 98+ percentile of issues.

The last time I had an issue with a PC game was Rage in 2011, and that was simply a driver issue, before that I can't even remember it's been so long.

@dynamitecop: TW2 installed incorrectly on my PC the first time I bought it. The requirements said 2GB of Ram and I had 4.

Yet there was a whole thread on a forum of ppl having to do a "pcredit" or something to direct more ram to the game and not the OS.

Stuff like that is aggravating.

Plus wasn't there an article about Nvidia saying most PC games were broken and they had to fix them with their drivers to run well on the cards.

So how is it 98% user error.

Seriously though, I know some people run into some bullshit with PC gaming sometimes. Infinite variation in hardware configs trying to run all kinds of software, someones bound to fall through the cracks.

The Witcher 2 installed fine for me when it came out, and at the time with 8gb's of RAM there was never an issue with it parsing RAM for the game, also I never heard of anyone having this issue so it must have been pretty isolated or you're just dumb and messed something up.

Most PC games are not broken, they are optimized for the hardware and drivers that manufacturers like Nvidia and AMD create to the best of the developers ability. After that it's the responsibility of these manufacturers to fine tune their hardware around what the game developers created via drivers, they optimize their software around the game code.

You seem pretty ignorant in terms of the PC to be completely honest, just the way you post leads me to believe that you don't know much at all and as a result are the butt end of issues that others are not.

@ConanTheStoner: :D, yeah some read too much into graphics, trying to make it as best as possible with different software and stuff, i get that but personally like you i don't care ...whenever i get a game , i just tweak the settings to get a solid smooth 60fps and that's it.

And hell even mods are easy to install.

Overall, i don't see any hassle with PC Gaming, at first yeah when you assemble and stuff but after that you're good to go.
