Nah, really this is good news. For PC gamers for obvious reasons, but also console gamers down the line. It's been the same story for the past few console gens. Cool things happen on the PC and eventually they make it to consoles. More PC gamers = more cool things happening on PC = more cool thigns happening (eventually) on consoles.

STEAM doesn't account for al of PC gaming. WOW doesn't represent or count STEAM and vice versa. You also have Origin and people that play games without those services in general.

As you demonstrate, there are multiple ways for people to get into multiplayer and even single player. Console gamers are effectively crammed into one room while PC gamers have many places to connect or even link peer-to-peer or sometimes at a LAN event.

And then there's the games that aren't tied to any particular service. I think you're underestimating how diverse the PC platform is.

I believe your numbers are way off. PS3/Xbox live does not have 8 mil to 10 mil concurrent users. The record number of concurrent users on Xbox live is 2.6 million. That number was set in November 2011 when MW3 was released. For comparison, STEAMs record number of concurrent users is 5 million (from Jan 2012). Right now, at this moment, there's over 4 million people connected to steam, with the daily peak around 4.5 million.

On top of that League of legends has a peak of around 1.3 million every day (note this is not the max number recorded but the daily max).

WoW and other Battle Net titles should be seeing a peak of at least 1mil based on WoW and StarCraft 2.

I took average Steam concurrent users and multiplied by 2

Then I added the same amount under "Physical + other"

That was about 8 million.

Then I added 2 million users from WoW who probably play games other than WoW.

And that's 10 mil.

Live doesn't release it's concurrent users, only it's daily/weekly total. but the numbers they HAVe released say 2 to 3 million concurrent max, EVER.
