Was wondering what's your opinion on competitive multiplayer games and issues related to cheating; actual cheaters, badmins kicking you for playing good, or people calling you a cheater and vote kicking you for playing good.

Have you experienced any of the above? Has it made you frustrated? Or in your experience it's not big of an issue?

P.S.

This is not a jab at PC gaming. It's just, from my experience, all the above almost never happens in console multiplayer (except being called a cheater), but happens a lot in PC multiplayer.

I've experienced it, mostly with older games that aren't supported as much. It's definitely more prevalent on PC compared to consoles, but I've seen it on consoles as well. I don't think it's so bad that it's ruining my experience. Just report and move on.

same here. if I think someone is cheating while playing counter strike i just report them and let the system handle it. If its clear they're really cheating that just makes me want to beat them more

I'm getting frustrated on PC BF4 as I'm being called a cheater a lot. Everytime I get high kills people start a votekick.

On PS4 BF4, people just message me profanity when I get high kills as there is no votekick in console BF4 servers.

While I have certainly met more cheaters on PC then on console (the nature of consoles, making it harder to do so, but there are ways), the amount is still incredibly low. I think I might have seen 5-7 cheaters in my entire life.

Seen plenty of people accused of cheating, simply because they were more skillful. But I think it is rather rare in general. The Badmin issue is a larger one. But luckily that is what dedicated servers are for. Admins are a double edged sword of sorts. They might be the reason why I see so little cheating but giving people the power to simply remove other people from a game if they are frustrated, can be a recipe for disaster given human nature.

But luckily badmins are not exactly typical either. And people are far more likely to be banned from shit posting and turning the atmosphere sour on a server, then by cheating (which is logical, since most servers are an actual income to people, and a good environment is required for a stabile user base.)

So I generally see it as a non issue.

I once got my account banned from America's Army back in the day. I was raping fools as usual and all of the sudden I got kicked from the server by an official AA admin and then my account was banned. This was absolute bullshit as I have never cheated in any game. They had no proof whatsoever. I couldn't even appeal the ban. Fuckin worst.

Anyway.... I don't usually find cheaters online when I play. I mostly play BF and they seem to do a good job of keeping the cheaters at bay.

Honestly, I find people's paranoia and refusal to acknowledge certain players are much better than they are to be a bigger issue than the actual amount of cheating that is going on.

In first person shooters, especially twitch based shooters such as Counter-Strike, I get banned an absurd amount. I can't go into any server for any game without being called a cheater and/or banned.

Some communities in the Counter-Strike games have literally banned me in excess of 30 times, but never have any or sufficient evidence and are always forced to unban me, it's highly annoying.

It definitely is a problem.

Yeah, you're not going to see tons of cheating in games like Battlefield, Overwatch, Counter Strike, etc. These games all have decent anti cheating software or tools to easily kick hacking players. However, when it comes to smaller games like Metal Gear Online, The Division, and Dark Souls, the issue is far more noticeable.

@JangoWuzHere: That is a good point u make. I have noticed a lot of cheaters in The Division. I can definitely see the issue being worse with games being developed by less experienced MP dev teams.

Don't see it often, but normally when I did they sucked so we could actually take them out enough to where they left. Or they got banned which was normally pretty quick.

Then again the people I played with including myself were accused of cheating a good portion of the time at least on random games where we weren't known so you never know. Sucked when we got kicked from games because we were pretty decent snipers... I mean people should know the difference between snipers that are great versus cheaters. Depends on the skill and salt levels I guess.

When the hackers even knew a little bit about the game however it wasn't ever any fun. When they do that instant 180 headshot, and in the kill cam the reticle spazzes, that's when I normally get ready to leave the game...

Depends on the game really. I personally haven't confronted many cheaters/hackers at all but that might just me.

  • The Division I heard was or is filled with cheaters/hackers BUT, I didn't play long enough to see one. I ditched it after a month because it was boring.
  • Meanwhile, Rainbow Six Siege was supposedly filled with hackers/cheaters but I still play the game and have been since launch and I only saw a hacker once.

The major things that can show you if a game might be or will be cheater filled is;

  1. Extremely popular competitive game or game series. Cheaters/hackers will gravitate towards those most.
  2. The game uses a Peer 2 Peer online system instead of dedicated servers.
  3. If dedicated servers are used, how much data is willing accepted by the server. Admin controls?
  4. If the game uses a weak anti-cheat/anti-tamper system.
  5. How often the developers update their game and their history with combating cheaters is.

In other words, don't expect For Honor to be any good on PC for multiplayer.

I don't think I've seen a cheater on PC in nearly a decade, and I've logged thousands of hours across games like CS:GO, Rocket League, WoW, League of Legends, Heroes of the Storm, Overwatch, TF2, and more.

That, or I'm just so god damn pro I beat people even when they cheat, and don't notice it.

Hmm, don't think I've seen anyone ever votekicked in BF4, and I've put in over 400 hours with some incredibly suspect cheaters. In fact, I didn't even know the game had a votekick option.

I was a competitive guy in sports and Kyokushin karate most of my life. I never got into competing with video games. That said, I hate cheaters so I just don't play MP on PC and save myself the trouble.

The only way I notice cheating is if they turn the ban messages on for me to see.

If it's a problem, switch to a different server and/or report them.

As someone whos been top 0.5% in csgo and some ridiculous hours poured in to it, yes cheating can be annoying but it hasn't "ruined" the game for me.

I've only ever encountered cheaters like more than a decade ago, tbh I've never seen a cheater for the past few years I almost forgot they ever existed. Its something you hear now and then but never seen it so...i suppose my answer would be a no. Your chances of meeting one is very very low.

its largely overblown, especially in this forum for obvious reasons but if cheating is so rampant, then multiplayer would be dead on PC, wouldn't it? Everyone should be playing single player games but no, the biggest games on PC are actually mostly multiplayer games, much more so than on console. CSGO, WoW and MOBA games are pretty sufficent proof that multiplayer on PC is hardly affected by so-called "rampant" cheating.

It's really only a problem in older games IME. CS 1.6 is the worst offender. Though it's easy enough to find a server with active admins. Being accused of hacking is another story. Shit happens to me all the time.

Haven't seen a cheater in a competitive game in ages.

Last cheaters I encountered was in GTA Online, and they always gave us money when we asked it nicely, so that wasn't too bad xD

From what I've played in online multiplayer games, I haven't seen that many cheaters....if a few at all.

It's mostly the fact that FPS games of the passed several years are COD, BF, Counter Strike where it's either twitch based or like BF where you just...get shot..from some fucking where...again...and again.

I like games like Tribes 2, UT2K4, Mechwarrior. Most of the run-of-the-mill FPS just seem brain dead to me.

@JangoWuzHere: good point, there are plenty of cheaters in dark souls in PvP and it's so obvious.

In twitch shooters it could just be that the player is very skilled, in dark souls you can see there health isn't dropping when there hit because there using unlimited health cheat.

I've seen cheaters in dark souls swing constantly without a seconds pause, impossible without a stamina cheat.

One of the biggest problems isn't people actually cheating it's people that suck reporting people that are just better than them of cheating.

It absolutely blows my mind when I'm playing COD:BO3 on Xbox One and I'm running my kill streaks to get the mothership then all I hear once the game ends and everyone is back in the lobby. Is "you suck" "why you gotta cheat to win" "I reported you". I'm just like "how in the actual **** does someone cheat on a game on Xbox One??"

Dont really encounter cheaters that often but what does grind my gears is people that pug MP games and only try if they are winning.

I friggin' HATE people that start to lose a little then just stop playing and sit back complaining and calling people names the rest of the game.

Gamers are obnoxious spoil sports.

Haven't played online seriously in ages. Whenever I saw a cheater I simply changed server and it was solved. If for some reason there was no other good server I would just play on a small one for a while and simply returned to the one I was and the cheater was usually already kicked. Don't know how things are nowadays.

I haven't noticed anyone cheating. It's mainly just others calling eachother cheaters. This is common in Overwatch, I've noticed. I think a very, very few amount of those that are called cheaters actually cheat.

I don't doubt there's lots of cheaters in PC games, but I haven't noticed or I don't play games where it's easy to cheat. The most cheating I've seen is in Mario Kart.

In my several decades of gaming, most of it on PC, the only game where I've seen cheating hitting epidemic levels is The Division's Dark Zone. You know what though? The entire idea behind the Dark Zone is so bad that the prevalence of cheaters in the game is not the worst part of it. The kit imbalance can be so vast that it often appears like the guy who just ran through 4 well equipped people just had the right combination of gear to do just that (most of the time it's just a cheating f*cktard though).

When it comes to other games where people claim they see cheaters all the time, it's actually just someone riding a high and/or is just far better at the game than they are. Lower ping, less lag, higher frame rates etc. can often be perceived as cheating as well.

The best way to get around the cheaters though is to get into some well administrated servers, make friends with them and laugh when they curb stomp anyone who tries to cheat on their little patch of land.

Last night I was playing BFBC2 and I met a cheater.

I played MP on consoles more than PC, believe me when I say that there are cheaters on consoles; especially on PS3.

They do cheat without making it noticeable. Some are really pathetic. They buy expensive devices just to use a mouse with turbo/rapid fire function.

Got kicked alot of times on CS GO, wayyyy to much. For any reason besides cheating.

Also got kicked in alot of games just by admings because they just don't like you. That's what I hate about dedicated servers with server list.

I like to play every match against strangers, or people that I won't be playing against anymore after a couple matches.

Playing older games on PC (multiplayer) is also a pain in the ass. Most people are just ass kissing admins in most servers. If you are silent in a server and you regulary come in that server once in a while admins or regulars want a random conversation with you. Not interested in that, and for alot of people it just gives a negative effect.

Also don't get me started on the "Donate to us please" spam on servers

Yes, PC probably does has more cheaters. But they are a rarity this day and age - not enough to sacrifice dozens of mega played competitive games for just 1. Especially if you don't like fumblesticks.

It's been about 8 years since I've run into cheaters on any mp games. And they were on console games, never dealt with that stuff on PC.

But yeah, being kicked from a game for "cheating" (playing good) is something that used to happen to me a lot. Luckily these days I suck too bad at mp games for that to be an issue now.

No big deal as i always play with friends, and i really can't understand why some people need to cheat!?!

There's no pleasure in winning that way, and no need to be upset if someone needs cheating to prove himself worthy.
