I'm actually surprised it took them so long to reach the milestone, but they did it. For a such a small team and a low-budget game this is a huge success.

Torchlight 2 is probably one of the best hack and slash RPG games in the past several years. It easily beats most of the console action RPGs and IMO, it's better than Diablo 3 also.

Thoughts?

It deserves even more than that considering many claim it to be superior to Diablo 3. Torchlight 2 was the first loot based ARPG I put a significant amount of itme in and I loved it. Even at $20 it is a complete steal.

That must mean it got 60 million pirated copies out there according to Crytek. Also, excellent for Torchlight. Wish I could play it, but alas, my computer sucks.

That makes zero sense. By that logic, certain 360 games should sell drastically better due to having 70 million shipped units (not sold).

This is a low-budget game, with minimal advertising we're talking about...

When it comes to "AAA" titles, 1 million usually isn't enough to break even, and can often be viewed as a flop. But here, this is awesome news for the developer!

That's where the industry should be heading, lower budgets where breaking even and becoming profitable can be achieved with a reasonable amount of copies sold...

It's even better considering that it's a DD title. That means that they see ~60% of the profits, compared to a retail title where they see less than 25% unless they're a juggernaut like EA that can publish their own game.

Does this concurrency mean simply logged in or actually playing games? Steam typically runs and logs in a user during pc startup. Most people are logged into steam whenever their pc is on.

Most probably simply logged in. I for one start Steam only when I'm about to play a game. But that's just me. I have only a few startup programs, like antivirus, firewall and dropbox (needed for work).

Doubt it would be much better. Torchlight is still a pretty unknown franchise when comparing to D3.

But the original sold over 1 million and quite a lot of people in China pirated it, but it does seem T2 sold in a quicker time span than the original

Sure, but when you compare it with over a 10 million copies D3 sold, it's still pretty miserable. Diablo is a divinity among gamers, one of the most powerful gaming franchises ever, and that is something Torchlight most probably won't ever accomplish, unless they upgrade their business and start making some serious marketing.

Maybe the first one was like that but there was a lot of hype for this one. It is not like there was a shortage of articles on all the gaming websites. Sure it did not have ads on TV like a Halo or CoD but even D3 did not have any.

Diablo is like a religion for those 10+ million people who bought D3. That's why D3 probably didn't need that much TV advertising.
I mean, take me for example. I was a million times more hyped for D3 than for T2. That's why I bought D3 on day one, and T2 much later.

Both games are great, but you can feel the developers' passion in T2, just like you felt it in D2. D3 doesn't have that.

I would argue most definitely with your D2 claim.. (I haven't played Torchlight 2).. People seem to be wearing the nostalgia glasses when it comes to Diablo 2 and seem not to remember the state Diablo 2 was in at launch.. Instead they seem to act and think that the 1.10+ D2 LoD was the only one that existed..

I havn't tried Torchlight 2 yet, after D3 I just don't want to play ARPG's anymore. But congratz to T2, from what I have heard it deserves the sales and is better than D3.

I agree Diablo dwarfs Torchlight in popularity. I am just saying Torchlight can't really be called a unknown franchise now. All gaming press game a ton of coverage to the game and it was talked about a lot at least on this forum.

I'm not quite sure the "small company" label can be applied to Runic. Their corporate parent is Perfect World, a NASDAQ-listed company with a half-billion dollar market cap.

Small companies like Runic Games have zero marketing budgets, and yet they are able to succeed big time because of sheer product quality and a million people out there who actually support their work.

Can't wait for their next project.

I'm not quite sure the "small company" label can be applied to Runic. Their corporate parent is Perfect World, a NASDAQ-listed company with a half-billion dollar market cap.

Yeah well Runic Games and Perferct World - not the same. Runic are the subsidiary and their budgets are still limited by their success and the parent company.

Games on the Dreamcast sold a million too. Don't know many who honestly believe PC games don't sell. Generally the argument is that piracy is a much bigger problem on the PC than it is on other game platforms. Which it is, aside from maybe the PSP.

What's truly impressive is that it's PC exclusive and sold over 1 mln copies in less than 4 months. By comparision, Torchlight 1 took almost two years to pass 1 mln copies combined on PC and 360.
