I own a PS3, Xbox 360, and a decent laptop that can run most games on medium-low. I was tempted to play some PC games on higher settings, so I research for some parts and using my noob skills to build a gaming PC for the first time. After hours and hours of herp-a-derping my way through, I finally finished it. With everything working fine, I installed Crysis and boom, my mind was blown, 1080p with everything on maximum and still get 40fps, it looked amazing, it's 10x better than what I play on consoles, GTA IV run silky smooth on max, even Call of Duty WAW looks epicly awesome. Now I know why people said PC gaming is better. But I'll still play my consolle respectively.

So who else's mind got blown by the awesomeness of PC gaming?

Mine. :o Built my first proper gaming PC late last year (I had a computer before that could play some games on medium, but I wasn't satisfied with that).

If you can put together legos, you can build a PC :P. The hardest part is probably getting all the right drivers (if you're new). Either that, or the cable management. That is still a **** and I have a nice big case with a modular PSU  It's really satisfying as well. Such a great feeling getting all those brand new parts and throwing it all together and booting it up for the first time. Ah, I still get a chubby just thinking about it... I mean

Same here, just got a new video card yesterday can finially run crysis maxxed fully at 1920x1080 at avg of 40 fps, I have had the game for 2 years now but am still blown away by it. I was a console gamer my whole life, now I still have the latest consoles and games but hardly turn them on, and am on my pc 95% of the time.

I spent around $1000 on mine (everything, monitor, mouse, keyboard, extra fans, fan controller, etc. Thank Odin for Newegg sales), and it was really easy to put together. Depends on what you already know, but you can learn really fast. It only took me like half an hour to get all the parts together (because I was going slow). Just like an expensive Lego set. It might be harder for people that haven't worked with a computer or seen the inside of one before, but it's still a quick thing to learn. Edit: Unrelated, but I need more games. :( I'm broke so I only have a few and most of them aren't really full blown single player games. Not sure what to spend my precious few dollars on. :P

Around 1300AUD, 21.5in 1080p LED monitor, i5 2500, AMD HD6870, 1TB HDD, 4GB DDR3 etc.

It's actually very ease if you follow the instructions. Just need to put in some screws, connect power to DVD, HDD. CPU fan, GPU etc, and connect some data cables to motherboard. The only hard part is to research which hardware is compatible, enough power and the price.

The only time PC gaming blew my mind was Counter Strike Source.

I had never seen the game in action, but I was a huuuuuuuuge CS 1.6 nut the early part of last decade.

Then my brother bought himself a new PC with a 6600gt, and got CS:Source. I thought it was amazing :P

I plan on building a PC once I graduate. I'll have around $2000 to work with but I doubt I'll spend even close to that. Should be a fun time building it though, I know barely anything about them. Skyrim, The Witcher 2 and BF3, along with my current laptop being barely able to run SC2 is what pushed me over the edge.

I'm cheap so I find the best thing about PC gaming is the free games (not the illegal kind) and mods. Whenever I have nothing to play on consoles and love money too much to buy a game there is always a module for NWN I have not yet played, free online shooter or other game to play with.

I'll be playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadows of Chernobyl (and I guess King's Bounty too.. :P) next week.

First game I bought for my PC: Crysis Maximum Edition. I played Crysis at the same time as Modern Warfare 2... let me tell you, MW2 looked and played like ASS in comparison to Crysis. That game was such an eye-opener! And Mirror's Edge on the PC, so much smoother than on the consoles, the controls are so easy to grasp and it is easily one of my all-time favorite games ever. Dragon Age: Origins on PC also took me for a hell of a ride. Great game, built from the ground up for the PC. Shame about the sequel to it though.

But yeah, PC is awesome. I'm in the same position as you, relatively new to it, been playing for a little less than a year now, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and King's Bounty are next for me. Not necessarily the greatest looking games on technical levels, but they are uniquely PC releases. Very excited to play both. I think they're both Russian games too. It's crazy to see Russian and European dev houses support the PC more than the American devs that are all going console now. But multiplats that are catered to the PC like Bad Company 2 and the upcoming Battlefield 3 make it hard to care! :D

I think triple monitors is a little extreme :P And I don't need a monitor right away. I'll probably use my t.v that I use now for gaming. That means more money for a more kickass PC :o

Imho it is easier to build from scratch then upgrade at times. Even with a driver cleaner you can still have a few issues with previous hardware installed. Newegg and Tigerdirect are good for ordering parts, reasonable prices. Just make sure everything you order is compatible. For under $800 you can build a respectable rig especially if you look fordeals.

Good to know! That's what I needed to see...because some of the prices being said here are a little off-putting :P-- I was hoping I could build a good one for at least $600 -- $650 (about the price of an HDTV/PS3 combo i'm considering buying). My little laptop I have isn't going to last much longer so this building a pc thing might actually be a much better investment for me(could be fun to but I still imagine it's not as easy as everyone here make it seems).

I know a few basic things about what goes into a computer, but still not really that much though.

Yeah, the bezel is what turns me off from the idea (that and my desk is tiny, I probably couldn't even fit 2). Besides, from like a foot and a half/two feet away from the monitor, one 23" is fine. :P

Yeah lol amen to that, it was early Late Feb-March 2010 i just built a new PC (specs in sig) to capture 360 gameplay with my HDPVR i built the new PC so i could have enough crunching power to render videos in HD in under 10 minutes and upload them to youtube, well it took me longer than 10 minutes to render with Sony Vegas (((took about 40 but i recently found out about PD9 and they have GPU transcoding built in so im able to render videos in 10 minutes now))), so i said screw it, i really dont have the time to upload videos to youtube. Then i sold my xbox 360, and bought MW2 and BFBC2 for PC...........all i could say was when i bought them was....WOW. I thought using the kmb at the time for gaming was hard, and impossible, i wanted to go back to using the 360 controller, but after a months, i was lighting it up online with the kbm, now that im used to the kmb, its much better than the controllers ever will be.

Actually there is a good thread on the first page which has different variations. http://www.gamespot.com/forums/topic/27863290/pc-gaming-is-as-expensive-as-you-want-it-to-be-56k-hell?tag=topics%3Btitle

Also I built my first without knowing anything, I just used google and youtube to help with process. It was fairly easy but I did not have any problems with the hardware or software, lucky.

Hey congrats on your new gaming rig! See people it's not that difficult to build your own PC. You shouldn't be intimidated by building your own PC, it may sound all complicated but if you can put together furniture from IKEA than you can easily build your own gaming rig. Not only that you will save a ton of money by building your own gaming rig instead of buying hunk of junk from Dell or HP.

Welcome to PC gaming.:)

Once you learn how to build a PC, it's easy as crap, to me it is, then again I learned about it in 2004. Being able to play at higher res and maxed out is amazing indeed.

You will find that it is as easy as people say :P

But yes, $600-$650 is enough for a good computer that'll run all current games really well. Don't expect max in games like Crysis or Metro 2033, but it'll still run them well. I mean I spent $600 on a computer a year and a half ago that runs all games really well, and you can get something quite a bit better than mine nowadays.

And if you do get stuck you can always come here! We've talked about computer building quite a bit in the SW Social Lounge at the top of the page, and almost everyone there is cool. The PC hardware section is also pretty helpful :)

I had Steam on my old laptop, got alot of indies games, always had to turn down my games to medium or low when playing Cod Waw or TF2, the framerate really sucks if I turn to anything higher than 1024x768. Now I can run everything on max.

Congrats. Enjoy some mods, there are plenty out there for all sorts of games. Many games that you played on console can be so different when you get some mods. ex: Oblivion, HL2, Fallout, MW1, and more...

I haven't had the money to upgrade in the past 3 years, but each time I do, I have to test it out with the latest game (graphically). Check out Just Cause 2 on max everything.

PC gaming is amazing. You definately get what you pay for. Still haven't reeled off the massive backlog of games I accumulated during the Steam holiday sales, good problem to have.

Personally, I was a bit underwhelmed. I don't think the experiential quality differs that much between consoles and PC, at least not to the degree some posters suggest.

I just built my new rig today (see sig). I'm loving it. I've played some Stalker and Witcher already. I think it's where I'm going to end up playing the majority of my games.

How much did all of this cost youl? Was it really difficult to build one?

Around 1300AUD, 21.5in 1080p LED monitor, i5 2500, AMD HD6870, 1TB HDD, 4GB DDR3 etc.

It's actually very ease if you follow the instructions. Just need to put in some screws, connect power to DVD, HDD. CPU fan, GPU etc, and connect some data cables to motherboard. The only hard part is to research which hardware is compatible, enough power and the price.

Please do not say that a computer monitor is "1080p." Computer monitors do not interlace, so it is redundant to add the "p," and somewhat confusing. The 6870 does not average 40 fps at 1920x1080 with even 2xAA on at very high while playing Crysis. With no AA and AF it's barely 35 fps. You should have bought the 2500k.

I wasn't that blown away when I bought my gaming PC back in 2008, but that was mostly because I was always casually playing my old system. What it did, however, was make PC gaming my primary entertainment source, which still holds true today. It really opened my eyes how there's more to gaming than just next months blockbuster release.

I know, it hard to believe people have different preferances. I cant play local play on F11 on my PC, therefore i use a console.
