Ever since Half Life 2, PC gaming has been going downhill. Just look at Half Life 2's multiplayer 'Deathmatch' hardly anyone played that. Then it had it's modificaito spin-offs such as Counter Strike: Source, Day of Defeat: Source, Team Fortress 2 etc. These game respectively did not have large communities except for Team Fortress 2 but that's because it was also on console. Valve, the cradle of current PC gaming, is now resorting to console strategies such as using achievements and DLC to keep their company afloat.

PC gaming since 2004 has already become the runner up to console gaming, with Nintendo coming a distant 3rd (casual gamers). Do you it's likely that PC gaming will ever regain her throne again?

At the current it seems unlikely, due to the fact PC gaming is slowly going downhill, with even new RTS type games such as Dust being released on XBLA instead of PC. This is because profits have nearly all died out due to pirating and people can no longer stand the high upgrade costs.

Yours sincerely,

Team Fortress 2? Half Life 2 spin-off? TF2 only has a large audience because it's on consoles? This thread should be locked immediately for being so wrong.

Also Starcraft 2 just got promoted to MLG's main game. So yeah, you're wrong. It's stronger than ever.

Starcraft 2 is a mere anomaly due to the fact it is a very popular "SPORT", not a game in South Korea. In fact Halo has long been the mainstand of MLG and will be again one day after the next release.

Starcraft is doesn't sell nearly as much as Halo, yet it completely replaced it. Why? Because it's actually competitive and so it the majority of it's fanbase, which massively outnumbers Halo.

Halo was in there because Bungie/MS was a huge sponser. Sorry but auto-aim and controller = casual, not competitive.

Oh, look, it's you. Hi, Mr. Analyst. :D **yaaaawn** Your post is so LOL worthy and have so many false "facts", but I'll just pick one of them.

These game respectively did not have large communities except for Team Fortress 2 but that's because it was also on console.

How many people are playing TF2 on consoles again? And I'll pick another one cause I'm bored.

is now resorting to console strategies such as using achievements and DLC to keep their company afloat.

And Valve's the only one doing this? And it's done only on PC?

Have you ever used a console controller? it is far harder to use than a simple mouse. You have a much harder time to aim with. Therefore it takes more skill to use controllers. Why would a controller constitute as a casual mode of input? A mouse can still be called a 'controller'.

I'm a little confused, is this why EA has stated that PC gaming is becoming their biggest platform? Hmmm, something doesn't add up and I think we all know what that is.

Ever since Half Life 2, PC gaming has been going downhill. Just look at Half Life 2's multiplayer 'Deathmatch' hardly anyone played that Because it was bad and everyone just played css. Then it had it's modificaito spin-offs such as Counter Strike: Source css had a peak of 61,163 players playing simultaneously and cs had a peak of 62,027 today , Day of Defeat: Source, Team Fortress 2 etc. These game respectively did not have large communities except for Team Fortress 2 but that's because it was also on console no one plays tf2 on consoles anymore. Valve, the cradle of current PC gaming, is now resorting to console strategies such as using achievements and DLC free content updates are bad now guys to keep their company afloat.

You think CS and TF2 don't have big communities? Well that just proved you have no idea what you're talking about.

And you think Valve need acheivments and DLC to stay afloat when they're one of the most profitable companies per employees in the world? Lol.

Olimar_the_Min

Keyboard = far more buttons to press, therefor by your logic it is far harder to use and therefor requires a huge amount of skill to use. There's more to it than just the mouse, which even then takes more skill to master than a controller. Use a controller and you're just limiting yourself. Use KB/M and you really gain skill. KB/M will beat out controller for FPSes any day. It's a proven fact.

Casual mode of input because the game has to be dumbed down to make it a viable input. For example, auto-aim was introduced because controllers simply cannot play FPSes well without it.

A mouse is a mouse. It is not a controller.

CS not having a large community?? You have got to be kidding me. 12000 servers is small???

PC gaming going downhill?? I see no evidence of this. Infact, I see the opposite.

Multiplayer is more than alive on PC, it is thriving. Not only that, it's getting bigger.

You have a hard time aiming with a controller cause it's C.R.A.P for FPS games. Anyway, it counts as a non-competitive mode of input when auto-aim is introduced. Mouse can be called a controller, but you know what we're talking about. What's the use of arguing semantics?

If I counted just the free to play games and assumed everyone has 3 accounts (so divide the whole number by 3) the number would still be at least double of the console users playing all 3 consoles online.

4/10 for a decent attempt.

I don't see how achievement and DLC are console strategies. Before the DLC were called expansions. Achievement are not even important but they are a nice little bonus.
