With Steam being the last Bastion of defence for PC gaming and most developers choosing to focus on consoles, I think it's safe to say that PC gaming is doomed. Recent company shutdowns, such as the S.TA.L.K.E.R studio, are one of many who are failing to cope in a climate where the consumer only wants to play on consoles. Quality PC exclusives such as Crysis are opting to be on consoles too and soon there will be no exclusives. Skyrim is console-centric, Dragon Age is console-centric, as it Mass Effect 3 by the looks of it. Looking at the recent CoD sales on PC also suggest that it's a dying platform; nobody wants to play it on PC, thus it'll continue to make a load of money on consoles.
Also, the expensive aspect of the Gaming Rig puts people off buying a Gaming PC; nobody in this climate wants to throw down $3000 on an alienware PC when they could buy a console for $250. This is making the PC market lose gamers, thus the console market is saturating. Another reason is that there is minor graphical difference between the 6 year old console and the new-line PCs. Uncharted and Gears of War, and even Crysis for consoles looks the same as PC graphics; and the PC gamers rely on 'mods' to make their graphics look acceptable. For example, Vanilla Naughty Bear on 360 matches The Witcher 2 on PC; here we have a clear example of why it is better to own a console.
Socially, it is less acceptable to own a Gaming PC; you're seen as much cooler and you get loads of friends if you own a console, especially a PS3, that is where all the cool brosephs are at. PS3 owners get invited to parties, drive fast cars and get lots of hos. Owning a 360 is okay, but you're a mere peasant in comparison to the Glorious Sony Master Race.
Anyway, I digress, the bottom line is, PC gaming is dying and I suggest those who own a rig should abandon it quickly before it is too late!
