Why? Because PC games last a LOT longer than console games.

- Starcraft is 10 years old still heaps of people play it and is national sport in South Korea.
- CS 1.6 is 5 years old(first version is 9 years) and tons of people still play it.
- Warcraft 3 is 5 years old and just the other night over 65,000 people were on. That wasn't even a weekend.
- Diablo 2 is 8 years old and still has heaps of people playing.
- Sims 2 has sold 13 million copies and it's expansions are still in the top 10 charts in many countries.
- Battlefield 1942 is 6 years old and still has dozens of full servers all the time.

So even with games like WoW selling over 11 Million and many others(Crysis, The Witcher ect) selling well over a million these games which are years old, some even a a decade or nearing it are still being played like crazy and have more players on than most Wii, PS3 and 360 games.

You say PC gaming is dying but what about consoles? How many people play TF2 online? How many games are pretty much dead online? Most? It's because with consoles they move to each new game. Gears of war is released and everyone plays it, Halo 3 is released and everyone plays it leaving GeoW with about 10% of what it had. CoD4 is released and is now beating Halo 3 in the most players online. What's next? GTA4? Will never one flock online to that next?

How many Xbox games have huge numbers of people after 10 years? Oh that's right there WAS no Xbox 10 years ago! So please explain how it'll die? Will those 65,000 Wc3 players just go "Hmm you know I think I'd rather play a generic online shooter instead. Lets gets Halo 3! Yeah!". Yeah I doubt it.

Now with games like The Witcher, Sins Of Solar Empire, Stalker: Clear Sky, Dawn of War 2(Million+ seller), Starcraft 2(Million+ seller), The Sims 3(Million+ seller), WoW: Wrath of the Lich King(Million+ seller), Warhammer Online, Dragon Age and tons of other exclusives just released or coming out within a year PLUS all the multiplats like CoD4(Million+ seller), The Orange Box(Million+ seller), Kane's Wrath, Mass Effect, GTA4, Red Alert 3 and more.

Oh bu...but it costs t3h $2000 a week! I heard that lastest patch for starcraft needs 2 9800's to run it at 640x480! And The Sims 3 will need more power than Crysis too! I mean now Crysis is out everyone single game needs the same specs right?

Wait I get it now. It isn't the money it's the developers SAYING PC is dying? But what about those developers who say it's going great? And their games are selling great on PC? Or games like Sins of a solar empire which has NO copy protection selling well? Where are the pirates for that game? Why didn't it bomb in sales from the easy piracy? Hmm, strange and here I thought PC was dead from piracy.

even though i love pc games, especially starcraft and warcraft, doesnt the information u posted suggest opposite of what you are saying. it seems that besides world of warcraft, the only games that are being played are old games, meaning no new ones are that good any more. but then again i dont know how many people play new ones, which i think suck lol

The Witcher, Stalker, Crysis, Burning Crusade, CoD4(PC version), The Orange Box have all sold over a million copies each. There are probably others too if I search harder. How do you know developers don't make money? More like they're greedy and are pissed off 70,000 people download their game, most of which probably wouldn't have even bought it.

Erm, name games that dont sell well made for the PC? other than UT3 ... which sold even worse on the PS3.

To be perfectly honest, Blizzard has more control over PC gaming than MS does. They try and get control but nobody cares(Eg: Games for windows live).

dont get me wrong.I invested in a heavy harware pc myself.but Im very dissapointed with the lack of interest developers show for old harware.they always expect the gamer to update and its just not worth it sometimes. in comparison to own say X360 in which u know all games are playable is very comforting. ofcourse if you know how to overclock your system then this wont be an issue.

It's not dying but evolving into somethig new. What IS dying, is the model of PC games being sold as package product via retail. Ppl like Epic, who built their model around this can see the writing on the wall; they've now even signed up to Steam. Piracy is rampant in the PC world, which also makes DL and subscription games more popular, WoW/SIMS etc have no trouble making money. I do tend to see the "peak graphics", that PC users have come to expect slowing down, clearly there's more money to made in PC games by developing for MID range systems. Sure GoW2 will look better on PC when its ported, but the PC is not the necessarily the "lead" platform for these games, so all you're gonna see are some better textures and stuff. Crysis is likely to be the last hurra for some time for grand scale "killer graphics" PC games. Gone are the times when ppl would drool over the next engine release like when Jon Cormak blogged on his development of the Doom3 engine. I currently have a 8800GTX that I've had for about 18 month. Appart from Crysis, there's no reason to upgrade to the latest cards (which only give marginal improvement on any account). Moreover, I don't see anything on the horizon, even for the next *12 months*! that would require me to upgrade. The PC game world has changed a lot in the last few years; the only game I'm looking forward to on PC atm is Starcraft2.

I wouldn't entirely agree with that - my PC was last upgraded back in 2005 - it wasn't even a fantastic PC back then - and I've never had any trouble playing any of the new games I buy (and I buy games every few weeks).

Sure, I can't run some games at max settings, but at least I can play them on decent settings without having spent any money on my PC 'this gen'.

The question you need to ask is if PC gaming dies then what will happen to gaming.

See if you are a brand new dev, you get experiance from modding games, and not everyone can afford the certification to develop on a console.

plus with no money been made from nvidia, intel and amd on high end products the consoles will suffer big time next generation.

[QUOTE="darklord888"]Why? Because PC games last a LOT longer than console games.

Hmm, strange and here I thought PC was dead from piracy. 1nverted

Every game in your list except the Sims is only popular due to the online community. I'm sure those titles would be long forgotten if there wasn't any multiplayer component. The 360, PS3 and Wii are the first consoles to offer serious online functionality so for all we know, in 10 years people might still be playing CoD4 online using backwards compatiblity.

Also, don't forget that Xbox cla ssics and Arcade remakes of old console games are selling like hotcakes on the Marketplace. Just look at the support around getting Goldenye ported to the 360, that's even OLDER than Starcraft!

CoD4? doubtful, the reason most PC games are still played to death is mods, something the consoles dont offer really.

Arcade games? I've been playing "Arcade" games online for the last ... god knows how many years, and on College computers LAN.

But you could argue that PC has no new games worth playing online, that's why people still play old games.

-_- ... are you being serious? that means the consoles dont either ... seeing as, most of the higher online games are multiplat ... CoD4?

UT3 , CoD 4 , Crysis , Quake Wars Enemy Territory , Team Fortress 2 ect ...

Now, lets face reality, its because those older games are great, have huge mod support, AND THERE ARE MORE PC GAMERS!.

There's really no reason for this. Those who play PC games can obviously see PC gaming isn't going to die anytime soon, so let the oblivious debate amongst themselves.

excellent post. pc gaming will never die. and those saying pc gaming is dying because it requires a lot of money to be a a pc gamer tey are wrong. a $700 pc and a $300 upgrades in a 4 year period and u play all the games on high settings. or saying that developers dont care abou t pc gaming anymore(hmm valve blizzard hell even ea with games sims and crysis) If developers didnt care about pc gaming games like COD4 or Assasins Creed and many others will never ported in pc. The only dissapointment for pc gaming last years was UT3

I dont know about Crysis, not alot , UT3 not alot, but that was a rehash.

Team Fortress 2 on the otehr hand is doing excellent, as is CoD4.

Sure you argue Halo 3 & CoD4 on 360 ... but erm ... Gears of War playerbase as dwindled, along with Rainbow Six Vegas 1 & PErfect Dark .. and whatever other online shooters ... GRAW.
