I have no idea why hermits keep pushing that PC is this blah and that blah. The truth is, PC gaming is no way near the mainstream appeal as consoles. Everyone talks about consoles and the games on it. PC, only talked about between males who are most of the time nerds.

Give me one PC game other than world of warcraft and the sims (clearly they are casual and have very low system requirements and also very cheap) that has a huge appeal like for instance GTA series and is talked about by everyone.

Err... so you're banning us from using mainstream games, but at the same time using the console's mainstream game? The devil!

Anyway, you're probably in America where PC gaming is "only" 37% of the market. It's much more dominant world wide.

Also, Starcraft - over 10 million sales

Half Life - Over 8 million sales

Half Life 2 - Over 4 million sales.

I don't recall Hermit's arguing that or that equaling quality. This is a dumb argument to make.

Example: (Mainstream) I am Legend milkage"Will Smith" as tag lead = Millions at box office. Mediocre movie

Example: (Art House) The Seventh Seal not nearly a box office impact= Influential movie verging on genius

If you want to argue we are niche, which indeed for the most part we are, go ahead, if you want to argue you are Micheal Bay type movie's with lower standards (GTA4), knock yourself out.

PC gaming definately isnt mainstream, i'm sure if you walked down the street and asked everyone if they had a PS2 or a gaming PC 95% would say PS2.

That doesnt mean PC gaming isnt relevant, but it's not as mainstream as consoles by any stretch and people who think so are lost.

Silliest thing i've read all day.

A gaming pc is any PC, because any PC is capable of playing a game. Ask any of the million+ people playing popcap games if they have a gaming Pc and they will tell you "hell yeah". Or anyone that bought one of the 100+ million copies of sims that have been sold since the seires launched.

Oh, and hey, for a gaming system that isnt as mainstream as consoles, it's funny that PC gaming has the single most popular/profitable game in the history of videogames (WoW)

There are over a billion PCs in people's homes all over the world today. And each one is able to play games to some degree. You don't have to have a super high end Geforce powered monster to play a game on your computer. People like you just choose to ignore that fact.

PC caters to the hardest of the hardcore, and the most casual of the casuals.

Football manager! If you knew anything about gaming ouside of the states you'd know that. And why exclude WoW and the Sims? Is it because your "theory" falls flat on its face because of those?

With the possible exeption of HL2,none of those games are mainstream.

What I mean is that if you walked up to a person in the street I doubt they would know anything about those games they way they would with say,Halo,Mario or GTA.

The PC isn't mainstream,in the sense that its not trying to appeal to as wide a demographic as possible the way consoles do,and thats not a bad thing.PC gamers get games like Company of Heroes,The Witcher and Crysis which aren't dumbed down for consoles.

I dont consider it that way. If you guys are talking about PC's in general, then yes PC is much more mainstream then consoles, practically everybody has a PC these days.

However i'm talking about a PC that's able to play Crysis. I call that a gaming PC, normal PC's dont do that, they're meant for home office work or browsing internet stuff like that, so when I say gaming PC that's what I mean, and those definately arent mainstream.

So only people who own the 360 elite or the 80 GB PS3 count for console gamers? Crysis on the PC doesn't interest me really. I play RPG's (PC has most of the bets ones), strategy (ie Civ, Total War, Gal Civ), Sims, Pirates!, some shooters (although I tend to play these more on my 360 as friends and family can join in) and football manager. None of those games are particularly system heavy and can be played on a medioum computer easily. Plus all PC games come with a little thing called SETTINGS. People who don't have uber gaming machines (ie more casual gamers) can turn down the settings and play a game fine. Not everyone cares about teh pixels like the console fanboys who haunt these forums arguing over still shots.

Sorry dude, while those games might be extremely popular with their respective fanbases, none of those come even close to having the mainstream/casual appeal of the GTA,Mario or Halo series.Maybe WoW,but none of the others.

I'll give you that. But thats one game.I'm talking about the genres the PC made its name in i.e MMO games,RTS and WRPGs.

Its big recent hits like Crysis,Supreme commander and The Witcher weren't developed with consoles in mind, and as a result weren't compromised or dumbed-down for a mainstream audience.

As great as those three games are,NONE of them has even close to the commercial or cultural impact of GTA4 or Halo 3.

You're comparing new titles to titles that already have a bunch of sequels. By the way, GTA started as a PC franchise.

The problem isn't a lack of mainstream appeal. Especially since there are way more PCs in homes around the world than consoles. The PROBLEM is that every single PC gamer wants to act like their knowledge and rig are standard when they aren't. There is no PC standard and therefore it makes it impossible for anyone to agree with them.

On the other hand, consoles are standard. I buy a PS3 and I'm getting the same experience as other PS3 owners. I buy a 360, I get the same rig as other 360 owners.

However, the thing that makes PC so appealing to many is the very thing that segments them.

GTA 1 started on the PsOne the same time as the PC.

I love how hermits usually bask in their elitism and how they're platform isn't tainted by the great unwashed masses, yet you're all trying to convince people that the PC is casual-friendly now.Jeez make up your mind.

The PC is the best platform to game on for the simple reason that most of its games aren't compromised or dumbed-down the same way console games are.

ok just for the sake of argument i shall humour you...

pc game with massive masinstream apeal i would asume here you are talking about PC exclusives, ok then lets talk audiosurf. an indie game that anyone can play, yes im sure you would call this 'casual' but WTH its an example. lets also not forget that the PC gets nearly all console games.

you said halo and gta but they are on pc, only halo 3 is not, and GTA 4 will be on its way. Halo's not that mainstream, i bet alot of non gamers won't have clue what halo is. People know gta because it plagues the news, and mario because he is gaming.

Mainstream definition = prevail or dominant culture

Is X360 dominant console? no

PS3 ? no

Wii ? no

PC ? yes

Consoles together < PC

Almost every person who have console have PC while not everyone who have pc also have console

Give me one PC game other than world of warcraft and the sims (clearly they are casual and have very low system requirements and also very cheap) that has a huge appeal like for instance GTA series and is talked about by everyone.

GabeNewellsPie

Half Life games?

Counter Strike?

Diablo?

Warcraft?

Starcraft?

Warhammer?

I could probably think of more, but PC is mainstream.

Sorry dude, while those games might be extremely popular with their respective fanbases, none of those come even close to having the mainstream/casual appeal of the GTA,Mario or Halo series.Maybe WoW,but none of the others.

how about Sims then?

I'll give you that. But thats one game.I'm talking about the genres the PC made its name in i.e MMO games,RTS and WRPGs.

Its big recent hits like Crysis,Supreme commander and The Witcher weren't developed with consoles in mind, and as a result weren't compromised or dumbed-down for a mainstream audience.

As great as those three games are,NONE of them has even close to the commercial or cultural impact of GTA4 or Halo 3.

Thats just my opinion,I'm sure people will put forward counter arguments to prove me wrong though.

how about second life?

Are you new here? Seriously, I logged onto starcraft yesterday and there were 77k people playing it. When 77k people are playing a 10 year old game, it doesn't get anymore mainstream than that.

Consolites are the most delusional people I have ever seen. They refuse to listen to ANY facts about PC gaming.

PC gaming has more users, is more profitable, and has the most exclusive and highly rated titles then any console. If PC gaming wasn't mainstream then none of that would be true.

PC is mainstream, thinking that it isn't just because in YOUR little circle of friends it's not talked about is just ignorant. The number of Steam users isn't that different from the number of Live users. Almost everyone has played a PC game at some point of their life.

Games like CS, WoW and The Sims have very wide appeal and they're all very different. You can't just ignore them and then say PC isn't popular, unless you want to rule out 3 of the most mainstream games from each of the consoles too. Lets take Halo, Madden and CoD4 away from 360 and suddenly it's a lot less mainstream as well.

PC IS niche and hardcore, but that doesn't mean it can't be mainstream and casual as well.

World of WarCraft has over 11 million subscribers. That is more than the entirety of Xbox Live. The fact that it draws in people who don't normally game let alone understand what a MMORPG is makes it hugely mainstream.

There were 10 million back in January. Could be over the 11 million mark by now.

Like hitting my head against a brick-wall.I'll explain my postion one more time, and then I'm out of here.

I'm not doubting that games like WoW or CS:S are incredibly popular with its fan-bases,but if you were to walk down the street and pick some people at random, then I'd bet my house that the vast majority would be able to tell you more about Mario,Halo or GTA than they would Counterstrike or WoW.Those games just have a greater cultural impact with the general public imo.

Completely your opinion, so your considering mainstream to people that dont play games to identify characters?

Thats like someone coming up to me and asking who is RENALDO and Ryan Giggs? I cant stand Football ( and Im british ) yet I know these things, but im not a football fan, I dont fall into mainstream football fan...

Ask anyone whos played games alittle what CS or WoW is and they will know, infact saying WoW is not knowen by everything at this point is absolutely laughable.

I have no idea why hermits keep pushing that PC is this blah and that blah. The truth is, PC gaming is no way near the mainstream appeal as consoles. Everyone talks about consoles and the games on it. PC, only talked about between males who are most of the time nerds.

Give me one PC game other than world of warcraft and the sims (clearly they are casual and have very low system requirements and also very cheap) that has a huge appeal like for instance GTA series and is talked about by everyone.

blue_hazy_basic

The problem isn't a lack of mainstream appeal. Especially since there are way more PCs in homes around the world than consoles. The PROBLEM is that every single PC gamer wants to act like their knowledge and rig are standard when they aren't. There is no PC standard and therefore it makes it impossible for anyone to agree with them.

On the other hand, consoles are standard. I buy a PS3 and I'm getting the same experience as other PS3 owners. I buy a 360, I get the same rig as other 360 owners.

However, the thing that makes PC so appealing to many is the very thing that segments them.

How about PS3 gamers who have no BC or 360 gamers who don't have live or a hard drive? What about console gamers who don't have an HD TV or cables for HD?

That's certainly an arguable point. People here argue all the time about BC all the time.

But the price of consoles is standard. The games you play are standard. And the hardware you play on is standard. Therefore, all console gamers have a common ground to discuss sales, controllers, features, etc. And the experience of playing the console and games is standard. On the other hand, since my PC is a good 5 years old and really outdated...and I know very little about PC maintenance other than running a virus checker, my gaming exerience is practically non-existance compared to my brother who upgrades his PC twice a year and keeps it running perfectly. Because my level of knowledge is lower than his, the price I will pay for a PC is much higher than the price he will pay because he can assemble his own rig and

THat is my point. We are both PC owners and users, but out experience is so different to the point that we can't even compare them. And I even see PC users discussing this amongst themselves. "What? You paid $600 for that rig? Mine is better and only cost $450!" "You like the new Nvidia card? That card sucks and is less compatible with certain hardware compared to my ATI card".

I don't thin anybody denies that PCs have potential for the superior gaming experience. Not even the most hardcore fanboys. But the level of experience is directly related to the level of passion for PC and the desire to get involved with the hardware. Consoles don't require any involvement with the hardware.

point is it draws people in because it has low system requirements and has universal and addictive appeal.

take sims 2, anyone can run it, its aimed at everyone, it gets millions on every iteration or expansion.

take gears of war, it appeals to domesticated-aggressive males who like blood and young boys who's minds are corrupted by this kind of thing. It sells well, its a good game, but it sells no way near as much as sims 1 or 2. Why? The audience:limited. Sims is open to all users, anyone can find this game fun whatever you say about it. And importantly, ITS ON THE PC! EVERYONE HAS A PC!

And because of the low system requirements, it sells more than gears or halo put together and millions of people can create something and enjoy the game without a single mutilation or outburst over a microphone.

See you keep going back to Wow.I've already said that it has a great cultural impact to rival any console game. But I'm talking about PC games in general.Games like The Witcher,Supreme Comander,Company of Heroes, Deus Ex etc are just to innaccesible for casuals imo.Thats why these games are dumbed down for consoles

e.g Deus Ex : IW

Oblivion was dumbed down from Morrowind to appeal to a wider audience and the 360 got a stripped down version of Supreme Commander.

This is just my opinion,I reseve the right to be wrong.

Sorry post = Fail.

At least come into this with some logic,I may be wrong on this but at least I'm arguing my point.

Same exact thing could be said about Dead Rising, Lost Odysee, Mass Effect, Forza 2 ect ect

There are more PC Gamers than current gen console gamers, there are as many million + Sellers, and then youve got the untrackable pirates, which while illegal are still gaming.

Spin it all you like, the most populated gaming platform is the PC, it is mainstream, saying otherwise is just down right wrong.
