For me, there has been one genre that comes to mind when I think of PC and that is strategy games. Years ago the PC was flooded with high quality/high scoring strategy games. Dawn of War 2, Civ 5, Total War: Shogun 2, Galactic Civilizations, and X-Com. The list can go on. Now, most strategy games are met with a luke warm reception. Look no further than Civ Beyond Earth and Galactic Civilizations 3 for proof.

Those games stood out and could not be played anywhere else. PC players once were able to call something their own. Now, they rely on saying they have, "superior multiplats."

How do you feel about a once mighty genre falling to its knees? Can it be saved with X-Com 2 and Total War: Warhammer or is the genre doomed, leaving the PC without a identity?

If they have to gimp it to work on consoles, then I don't think it is really "high quality"

Also, how is it "scraps" when it was announced on both platforms

@uninspiredcup I like a few of their games, but you are correct. They are full of fluff.

Edit; He deleted his rant about a mediocre developer.

I found Wargame: Red Dragon pretty cool (super harsh learning curve though). I think it went for a more realistic modern military thing that mostly works.

Relic is working on a secret project. Hopefully we'll hear about that soon. Next month Starcraft 2: Legacy of the void is coming out. Very excited for it. Next year, Total War: Warhammer, XCom 2, Endless Space 2, Battlefleet: Gothic Armada, Ashes of Singularity and probably Homeworld: Shipbreakers. Paradox is also working on Stellaris, Space Grand Strategy.

But yeah, we need more RTS. I wish Sega had bought Massive, then would've new Ground Control or World in Conflict. Ubisoft just uses them to work on AC, Far Cry and Dumbed down shooter, The Division.

You have to realise all the big publishers downright killing off their strategy devs (MS-Ensemble) or redirecting them to other stuff (MS-Lionhead, Ubisoft-Massive). Because big publishers simply would never make a high budget strategy game exclusive for PC anymore.

The only one that still does is Sega with Total War and Company of Heroes.

The last high quality strategy game we got was Act of Aggression. I think it looks great and I don't think the big budget RTS or strategy games will ever make a return.

Most of you are posting games that lack the critic praise and budget I'm speaking of. What happened to the games with a 90 on metacritic? The game to puff tour chest over?

Yeah me too. XCom 2 looks amazing. Warhammer will be a kick ass game, provided CA gets enough time to polish it. You should also keep an eye on Cossacks 3. It's being made by GSC Game World. The guys, who made STALKER.

Cossacks is insanely hard, like impossibly hard. Like Ninja-Gaiden on NES hard but as a RTS game...

It's not like the genre reinvents itself or makes big chances anymore.

The way strategy games play is pretty much set in stone. I don't see 90+ scoring strategy games on PC any time soon.

Battle Realms was one of the few RTS that was really innovative. Shame it didn't get any attention.

That's another thing: smaller strategy games that do try new stuff in the genre get even less attention than traditional strategy games.

Talking about upcoming games. BTW Homeworld Shipbreakers looked really great. Hopefully Gearbox won't force Black Bird Interactive to rush it. I can see the potential. Even when it was called "Hardware Shipbreakers", it looked a lot like Homeworld, both in art style, cutscenes and gameplay. And now it's officially a Homeworld game, prequel to HW 1.

Budgets for strategy games aren't the same as with first person shooters or generally console action games. And no one gives a shit about metacritic.

You don't know what you're talking about. If you were interested in strategy games, you would know that there is plenty to play with now and in the future for the rest of your life.

Yeah... but supreme commander is just sooo good. Now with FAF (Forged Alliance Forever), it's like..... why bother even trying new RTS games.

Could always use more turn-based RPGs though.

as long as Relic and CA keep doing there thing its enough for me. I can put endless hours into their games.

I'd love another WiC but that wont happen. I've kinda lost interest in traditional RTS like Starcraft/Grey Goo/Act of Aggression

Stellaris is my bet for the next high quality rts game outside of the normal blizzard/ca games we all known and love.

It's a space game made by the guys that make Crusader Kings.

https://www.paradoxplaza.com/stellaris

Relics secret project is probably Dawn of War 3. Which would also be great especially if they take it back to DOW 1s roots. I wasn't a huge fan of DoW 2 it basically plays pretty much like A dumbed down Company of Heroes. I miss the huge battles in the original DoW

Relics secret project is probably Dawn of War 3. Which would also be great especially if they take it back to DOW 1s roots. I wasn't a huge fan of DoW 2 it basically plays pretty much like A dumbed down Company of Heroes. I miss the huge battles in the original DoW

I also didn't like Dawn of War 2, much. It was still a great game, like 8-8.5/10 imo, but it's not "Relic great" which is always like 9-10/10. Would love to see Dawn of War 3, going back to its roots. Or they can simply merge both style of gameplays.

Give us huge battles in normal missions and then fill some gaps with search and rescue missions where you only control handful of troops like in Dawn of War 2. Kinda like Starcraft 2 where in some missions you only control small number of units (like secret mission in Wings of Liberty or second last mission where you fill enemy base with lava) and most of the time you are in control of big armies.

To be fair, Civilization: Beyond Earth was pretty much like a Civ 5 mod. I'd rather just play Civ 5...

I'd love to get into the Total War franchise, but I don't think I have the hardware for it.
