I love Windows these days. Back in the 90s/early 00s I thought it was rubbish but today it seems great :D

Which is the most popular?

Windows.

Exactly. That's why it is the least safe.

Also, the Computer market would epicly fail with many large OS'es.

Nah, it needs some kind of consistency, otherwise it would be impossible to develop for.

I agree with you for the most part. I only use Windows for playing PC games, and I don't even bother touching browsers or downloading anything with it... I have my laptop with Ubuntu installed on it for that. Windows seriously is unsafe and subpar at anything besides gaming.

This. Back before Windows became the de facto standard, buying software was a bit of a hassle. You might think it would be nice to have an OS dedicated soley to gaming, but then you lose all the non-gaming functionality that a PC provides. So in that regard, you might as well just buy a console.

Computers are only as "safe" or intelligent as their users. If one's computer is easily infected or slow that says something about one more than the computer one is using. Also TC, you say windows is slow; i.e. bloated, and you use Ubuntu? Do you have any idea how silly that is? Use scientific Linux if you want a "fast" OS.

No... hackers have no reason to go after Mac, so there are less scripted programs for hacking designed for it. Market share has everything to do with how many script kiddies are running around. And for Unbuntu you have to open tons of ports to get anything working with online play. A unified open source platform is ideal for gaming... Windows is not the problem.

Ubuntu 10.04 boots in like 10 seconds thats pretty fast. I use ubuntu because its the most supported os . I have used puppy linux that was pretty fast.

When it comes to being "safe" I should not have to tip toe around the net . With linux i can visit pretty much any site and not have to worry. ubuntu is updated all the time . So i don't have to worry about how safe i am .

Yeah, and when you want to get a program, you probably have to run Wine, or have about 10 different versions of the same program. Who wants all that extra hassle?

Agreed, I dislike Windows. Although Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate is a VERY GOOD OS its the one I use now.

However, I wish that Steam made their own OS. Any PC game you buy or play should require a Steam account to run and then get your own Steam OS for advantages :)

Or a nice Google OS.

That's nice and all, but I've had my windows partition for almost a year now. I didn't install an anti-virus program. Recently I did and scanned to see how many infections I had on my system. Zero. I use the web extensively and I don't need to tip-toe anywhere. Sounds like your problem more than the computers, no offense. As for Ubuntu being the most supported, that's kind of wrong, all the repo's are available on the internet for anyone running under whichever session you use, be it deb or gtk or whatever. You just don't have a button that says "update" to do all the work for you.

this reminded me of this article

Apple users have less protection from viruses and malicious software than Windows users do. But they're still safer, security experts agree, because so few malware programs target the Mac.

//

Apple's new Snow Leopard operating system, which landed in stores Friday, adds a few security enhancements to protect Mac users from malware. But like previous versions of the Mac OS, Snow Leopard lacks security features that are built in to Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7, such as full Address Space Layout Randomization to thwart attacks from malicious code.

That makes Macs more vulnerable to attack, explained Charlie Miller, a security researcher and author of the book The Mac Hacker's Handbook. But despite its weaknesses, Mac users have no reason to panic — yet. Apple's PC market share is still roughly only about 10 percent, giving hackers and malicious software coders very little economic incentive to target the Mac.

In short, Mac users are ducking behind a short wall — but as long as the enemy is firing in another direction, they're not in grave danger.

"If you're a bad guy and you're doing this to make money … you don't want to spend 90 percent of your time on Windows and 10 percent on Mac," Miller said in a phone interview. "You're going to want to spend 100 percent of your time on Windows."

The problem isn't getting games to just move to another OS, it would be to get most all programs to work under it aswell. There are still quite a lot of programs that just aren't developed for Linux or Mac, including many games. Windows is a safe bet for developers because the install-base for it is massive.

Knowing the PC Gaming Alliance, I'm sure they will hear the outcry against Windows and release a report supposedly PROVING that Windows is not only the single best OS ever made, but 99% of PC users stick with it because they love it and have mastered it and hug it before bed each night.

And what is wrong with that?

I can run windows 7 on 256mbs of ram and a pentium 3 processor.

I have it on my old laptop and it runs very smooth and boots up fast.

You just have to be intelligent enough to configure it.

You do realise the reason Windows is attacked so often is because it is the most used OS? if we had another one take its place it would also have the most security issues :|. Im using XP and no problems here using a healthy dose of common sense where needed.

Windows is doing wonders for PCgaming, leaving it out would propably cripple pcgaming for good.

Plus please...it's not 90s anymore, hardly anyone cares much about their OS, they just need a system that allows them to run their software and Windows provides that.

Windows USED to be rather unstable... Windows 7 gave me no problem at all, ever!

(I had all Windows versions from 3.11 onwards, so I know what I'm talking about...)

Oh, and it doesn't let apps install themselves without your consent...!

Yes, Linux can be considered a better OS for many reasons, but game developers

had to stick with releasing their games on the most popular OS, simple as that!

This statement alone defeats any kind of crediblity you could have earned in this thread. Win 7 is definitely much more than "light version of vista with new task bar". You say WIndows is easy to attack. It is also easy to get a few free programs that will protect you against the majority of the viruses out there. PC Gaming Alliance is a sham and nothing will come out of that organization, so don't bother waiting for a magical OS to come out that will magically be the #1 gaming OS for the PC.

Hahaha, no. I don't know if you were trying to be sarcastic or whatever, but I wasn't talking about games.

win 7 is just a lighter version of vista with a new task bar .

Whats so different then? Free apps don't work half the time when it comes to virues . I really dont see a huge leep from vista to win 7

I agree with you for the most part. I only use Windows for playing PC games, and I don't even bother touching browsers or downloading anything with it... I have my laptop with Ubuntu installed on it for that. Windows seriously is unsafe and subpar at anything besides gaming.

1080pOnly

nice to see another ubuntu user : ) Glad you agree to many win pc users here .

Good luck playing those games with Ubuntu ... oh wait.

Mac OSX sucks for gaming and game performance. You seriously telling us you can't understand why so many people here like Windows....

People use windows because it's there only option . OSX is a way better os then windows. But that's not saying much because pretty much anything els.

Yet it looks pretty much the same and runs a bit faster. you might get like 2fps faster in games with win 7 .
