Peace Walker was originally named Metal Gear Solid 5

A true, if not official sequel

http://i.neoseeker.com/n/5/image419_thumb.png

Creator Hideo Kojima has already indicated the forthcoming PSP title Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker would be a "true" series entry, most didn't know quite to what extent until now.

Turns out the game was originally named Metal Gear Solid 5: Peace Walker, a nod to its sequel status. Some may have noticed this during brief flashes in the initial teasers.

In any case, Kojima Production public relations lead Jiro Oishi says the game is "the apex of the numbered Metal Gear Solid [titles]", for what that's worth.

But if anyone honestly think this will be up to the quality of MGS4/ Rising, they are sadly mistaken. I always laugh when Cows want Rising to be a minor entry/suck. It's on your console too!

Yes but unfortunately they had to make some changes and had to drop the 5. Due to technical restraints, Hideo Kojima decided to completely remove all those pesky gameplay segments and get to the cutscenes that everyone is there for .

Sorry, couldn't resist, Escapist Network News.

Chances are Rising is about Raiden in between MGS2 and 4. While I'm sure it's going to be interesting it probably will be a rather minor entry and probably won't progress the plot at all other than making people hate Raiden even less.

I'd imagine it'll be a full entry in the series, no reason to assume it's not, other than false hate for a series you guys all love. Because MGS....whatever they call the next big console one, will probably end up on the xbox as well. And since this gen isn't seeing an end soon, I'd say 360/ps3 again.

Come on now, a PSP game is not going to be the studios major game. Speaking financially, it makes zero sense. If we apply logic, it's understandable that they're focusing and hyping Peacewalker as of now because, you know, it's coming out much sooner.

Well it won't be hard to top MGS4 in terms of story IMO.

Well if Raiden is anything like his original personality (which would make sense if the game is in between MGS2 and 4) than yeah there is reason to hate because he was a whiny *****

I liked it. Don't take MGS like you would a hardcore sci-fi universe--> the MGS universe does indeed use coverups for plot holes, etc. However, the main story is about themes and messages, etc., not about knowing the in and outs of the universe. If you are trying to know everything about MGS's universe, you're looking for the wrong things. Because honestly....the details in MGS suck. The main brush of the story, however, doesn't.

lol stupidest comment this day. 'that PSP game' is the one that the main MGS4 team is making. Rising is being made by the young, rookie devs of Kojima Productions. financially, it will sell well. have you ever heard of FF7: Crisis Core, a PSP game? yup, it sold 2.1 million units. tell me, a game that's much cheaper to make would sell as much as a console game. that doesnt make sense financially? lol.

and no, this isn't a true MGS. no matter what you say. sure, it's on the 360, but as long as it doesn't have the '5' on it, it's not a true MGS game. that's like saying Bad Company 2 is as full-fledged as Battlefield 3. lol. i love my PS3, but we all know that Battlefield 3 wil be much much better than Bad Company 2. that's all there is to it. Rising isn't MGS5.

I won't add any spoilers of course but I didn't care for a lot of the characters (even the older characters). Also a lot of the story felt rushed and sloppy. Personally I found MGS4 to be the weakest in the MGS series. But to each their own of course :)

What you just posted makes no sense. Portable OPs didn't have a 3.5 included in the title but it was still a "true" MGS game. Spin off titles can be canon to the main series also if the devs chose to do so. Heck there are even times that a number title in a series isn't even treated as a main entry (Silent Hill 4 is a great example)

Makes perfect sense, as I have read almost all PR for the game, including Kojima's talk of the game, team, and such.

The MGS4 team is making this game after all ;)...and unlike all other games coming from KOJIMA productions, KOJIMA wrote this game as well.
Every other game announced, he's just the producer.

So, Kojima went from Director, Writer, and Producer, of MGS1, MGS2, MGS3, and MGS4....to Writer and Producer for Peace Walker.

Metal Gear Rising is not even in the same vein, and Kojima is only producing it, he didn't write or direct Risiing.

Unlike the other MGS1-MGS4 games which are labelled on the game case box as "Tactical Espionage Action"...

Metal Gear Rising is different. The game case art even labels the game as "Lightening Bolt Action" which clearly shows the MG franchise is going in a different direction, and as we know, a whole new development team.

It's probably to help sales of course, make the game more appealing to other consoles, while maintaining it's appeal to the core Playstation audience as well. I mean, remember, MGS4 sold 5 million copies while only being on the PS3, Gears of War styIe sales! Konami don't want that audience to leave, but they want to capture the PC and Xbox guys if at all possible. :P

Here's one of my examples before you guys ask: "So when designing The Boss, I imagined a mother with one breast out, feeding her child a kind of mother-son nuance. So even with her breast exposed she would enter battle. When I first designed her, in the area around her chest she had a tattoo of a snake. So, when firing a gun, her breast would shake, making the snake look like it was laughing. There would be this legend; that when you saw the laughing snake, your life would soon be over."

It's not that surprising.

When you consider the development time and cost of MGS4, MGS5 going cross platform of course makes sense. However dumping 5 on other platforms when the fanbase is primarily on the PS3 is a problem.

So they develop for the PSP, enabling them to make a low cost sequel for the Playstation fans; while going cross platform with the spin off.

I dunno...Portable Ops was fantastic in every meaning of the word, and this could be the same. Sure it wont have the snazzy graphics of the PS3, but sometimes using weaker hardware makes devs focus more on gameplay than graphics. For instance, one of my all time favorite games premiered on the PSP (Lumines), so I have a lot of hope for this game. And some PSP games (like Syphon Filter) actually compete with console games features and excitement. I'm looking forward to checking this baby out on PSP. The only problem I have with it being on PSP is that some people may miss it due to it not being on a console and this false notiong that if a game is not on a console, it's a missable installation.

Yea it's a big waste, Kojima seems to want the MGS series to die and taking it to PSP is part of that, what a way to diminish a series by putting one of its main entries on to PSP. Let's hope Rising is a success without him. By the way Rising is after MGS4.

:PSolidTy

I'm personally happy that Kojima isn't directing Rising. MGS was one of my favorite games of all time but it just got weird after that. Let's see what directing the series takes without Kojima's leading Rising. To me he seems like the Tomonobu Itagaki (Ninja Gaiden creator) of Konami. Seems full of himself after achieving success.

Btw, Gears 1 sold 8.9m, Gears 2 sold 9.5m. Roughly double MGS4 sales.

This annoys me. Why I will still play Peace walker and most likely enjoy it, the game could be a million times better if it was on consoles. It's really hard to think of it as a serious MGS game when it's on the PSP.

www.vgchartz.com I'm sure your response will be *lolz VGchartz*. Without another more credible source, it's what we use. Also, VGchartz has been used for their data by the New York Times, New York Post, Forbes, BBC and last October Square Enix used VGChartz data at their financial meeting. (as per wikipedia). So before someone responds with *lolz vgchartz* . . . Just don't. I trust NYT, NYP, BBC, Forbes, and SE judgment far more than yours. If it's good enough for them, VGC is good enough for me until we get official numbers.

Lolz vgchartz.

You're looking at user score, not sales. Gears sold 6m while Gears 2 sold 5.6m

Aye. I just went back and checked. The user scores were right next to the sales and so when I checked I mistook one for the other. I corrected it.

Did Portable Ops suck? He little to do with the development of that title (heck he didn't even write the story ofr PO)
