Penny Arcade's surveyed 38,350 readers on their gaming preferences, which has to be the largest sample of its type. Like, ever.

It's well worth a nose. The average age of those questioned is 26, and 94 percent of them are male.

They're not too keen on PS3 either, apparently.

Console Ownership:

  • PC: 86.3%
  • Xbox 360: 54.1%
  • Wii: 53.5%
  • PS2: 52.7%
  • Nintendo DS: 51.5%
  • iPhone/iPod: 29.9%
  • XBOX: 26.2%
  • PS3: 24.5%
  • Sony PSP: 20.5%

You would think that the PS2 would have been higher than the rest of the consoles.

I would like the iPhone to have been on its own. Strange it comes above the PS3. PC gaming obviously is dead as always, eh console fans? :P

Yeah, I thought the PC would be much higher over 360 then that. :P Seriously though, all doing fairly well but PS3 it seems is lagging big time.

Very true. Every time I see a poll on here I think to myself... o.k., but your only fooling yourself.

Not to be contrary, because I don't think PC gaming is dead, but almost everyone owns a computer these days. It's essential for all sorts of things from work to entertainment. Not just for gaming. It doesn't necessarily make it a gaming rig, either. All we know is that 86% of the people own computers. Not how many games they own (this is more important for the PC since it is not a gaming-centric platform) or how often they use it for gaming. It has always been my belief that the PC is a beast of a different sort. I only bring that up so the PC elitist don't let the hot air blow their heads up. AncientDozer
except the poll specifically states GAMING PERFERENCE, not what you own.

"Penny Arcade's surveyed 38,350 readers on their gaming preferences, which has to be the largest sample of its type. Like, ever."

EDIT Its more like console fanboys keep saying that no one (or hardly anyone) games on PC's anymore.

Yeah it's a good result for the PC, as for the PS3 it might be an indication that most people that own one only do so because it's a relatively cheap Blu-Ray player

BS, if you read the link you'd know they asked the readers about their gaming preferences not just about what they own, there is plenty of info in the poll indicating that the question was related to gaming and that the PC is being counted as a console.

EDIT Its more like console fanboys keep saying that no one (or hardly anyone) games on PC's anymore.

But it's not.

If 86% preferred PC then that would leave only 14% to the rest. But there's clearly more, which pretty much rules out gaming preference.

Now it does say ownership, and if it is then the percentages make more sense.

You need to read up on how survey data works and on their reliability on a bigger scale, you'd be surprised on how accurate they are.

Public surveys?

The same kind we have here (and in which the PS3 mostly always wins) and people discredit automatically because anyone can vote mulitple times?

I don't know. Seems rather strange that the iPhone is higher than both the PS3 and PSP. What kind of gamers visit the PA site?

That only works with a random sample. This is hardly random. They asked visitors to their site only. Hence why 96% or so said that they check Penny Arcade twice a week. Are you seriously going to try generalizing these results out into the real world? Go ahead. Ask 100 people on the streets, and I would bet, no where near 96% have even heard of Penny Arcade.

I have taken 3 different statistical courses in college for my two majors. I know how statistics work well enough to know that this survey certainly won't generalize past the PA audience.

Penny Arcade games are on the PC most of all and then I know there is a couple on the 360. I am not sure about the PS3.

I don't care what you believe, but its true. I took a stats course in Jr College for a math credit, I had to take one for my Psychology major, and I had to take one for my Comp Sci major. They were all more or less the same class, but they had differing focuses each time. One was my choice, other two were required, and had I known, I would not have taken the first one.

He isnt bragging, simply showing that he's credible. Spruce is one of the most humble posters on this board.

Say... speaking of.... did you take the survey? I didnt... hm... I wonder how many people in the "real world" actually took this survey... maybe, just maaaaybe... Spruce is right? Hold this poll as a fact if you want... but Spruce is right, and his point makes complete and undeniable sense.

Agreed, Spruce is one of (if not THE) most stand up posters on SW. I don't think you'll find a single regular poster who'd question his credibility.

Very interesting, but the stats are still not valid for drawing conclusions about the population, because the sample wasn't random.

[QUOTE="AncientDozer"]Not to be contrary, because I don't think PC gaming is dead, but almost everyone owns a computer these days. I only bring that up so the PC elitist don't let the hot air blow their heads up. blue_hazy_basic

except the poll specifically states GAMING PERFERENCE, not what you own.

"Penny Arcade's surveyed 38,350 readers on their gaming preferences, which has to be the largest sample of its type. Like, ever."

EDIT Its more like console fanboys keep saying that no one (or hardly anyone) games on PC's anymore.

I think you need to re-read the link. The overal poll is Gaming preference but this part...

Console Ownership:
- PC: 86.3%
- Xbox 360: 54.1%
- Wii: 53.5%
- PS2: 52.7%
- Nintendo DS: 51.5%
- iPhone/iPod: 29.9%
- XBOX: 26.2%
- PS3: 24.5%

....Specifically says ownership, not gaming usage. I am not claiming that nobody(or hardly anyone) games on PC's anymore, but to think that everyone(or even a large majority) that owns a PC, games on it is just as preposterous

[QUOTE="SpruceCaboose"][QUOTE="Oscar-Wilde"] You need to read up on how survey data works and on their reliability on a bigger scale you'd be surprised on how accurate they are.Oscar-Wilde

Actually you are right so yeah disregard my posts defending this crap. Also no sorry i don't believe you, i have met brain surgeons, lawyers and politicians on boards like these, everybody knows everything in the Internet.

So I suppose you wouldn't believe me if I said I have decent qualifications and am working toward Engineer/Medicine/Physicist courses?

[QUOTE="Oscar-Wilde"][QUOTE="SpruceCaboose"] I don't care what you believe, but its true. I took a stats course in Jr College for a math credit, I had to take one for my Psychology major, and I had to take one for my Comp Sci major. They were all more or less the same class, but they had differing focuses each time. One was my choice, other two were required, and had I known, I would not have taken the first one.carljohnson3456
Nope sorry i mean no offense. i really don't, but i just don't believe you and even if you were telling the true i see no reason for you to brag in a freaking video game board.

I agree, unless the whole population is surveyed you wont get very reliable results.

Me and a PSN buddy did that a while ago. It's hilarious. One of the guys saw me switch from my male avatar to my female avatar and asked why I had a male avatar. I made up the biggest load of bull, telling him that I was really a girl and I just had a male avatar so guys would leave me alone and the guy believed it. Man, people are so freaking gullible on Home.

I did and said I'd got it wrong. I even published the whole poll at the end of the first page.

Funny that the top two genres are RPGs and FPS, and surprisingly, Platformers are the third. No wonder why people complained that the FPS genre is oversaturated.

lol I did that too man. When he finally invited us to his apartment we went ya know... planning on changing into guys inside there. And it wouldnt let us!!! We were mad. So then we did it again, and then we changed BEFORE his apartment. It's hilarious, because the most common reaction is, "WTF?" and then they walk away, lol.
