Its all in the thread title, you dont have to be a vet systemwarrior to realize that the free online multiplayer PSN offers has always been one of the biggest selling points of the Ps3 ever since the console launched, that feature has been used to justify the launch price, justify particular purchases and thrown in as an advantage the Ps3 has over the 360 along with the argument that despite the extra features Xbox live isn't worth it because it those are being forced upon users since the access to the online multiplayer (the main point of a service of that nature anyway) is also a premium feature available only for subscribers of the full package (Gold XBL accounts).

If Sony began to charge for online multiplayer as a premium PSN feature the same way Microsoft does with Xbox Live, not only those who supported the Ps3 with the argument would be owned but also those who have been paying for xbox live yearly fees and were not secure about their investment would gain the security that they're not being the only ones "ripped off" to put it in harsh terms because with both the Ps3 and Xbox360 having fees for access to online multiplayer it would be progressively considered as a premium feature and no longer a nickel and dime as it was 4 years ago. ¿two in distress makes sorrow less they say?

And of course, we can't set aside the "Hahahaha Now Ps3 fanboys are also paying for online the 360 is by far the best value, Sony had to make money somehow, PSN is still garbage and people now pay for it, Xbox live is superior" Factor, we are in system wars and everything that can be considered negative in the slightest is used for ownage.

Lets make it clear, Party chat, cross game chat and user interface is awesome with Xbox Live of course it is, but Only one Out of the four main gaming platforms we have in the market now charges their users to play their games online and that would be the 360, insecurity is bound to be off the charts and now that Sony seems to be preparing to launch a premium service with a hefty fee and yet still offer the basic feature ( Online MP) for all users, payed subscribers or not, what do we get. Mixed reactions thats what we get, If I bought a 360 at launch for Xbox Live and I've been paying for it ever since how much did it cost me to take full advantage of the capabilities of my console? More than 599.99$, believe or not and we were all taught at system wars school that no console should cost that much...right...? Oh but thats crazy, Microsoft doesn't force their users to pay for gold at gun point, its not a valid point so scratch that.

We're all consumers first and then gamers, we speak with our wallets and every Penny we shell out has to be justified, Gaming is not a cheap hobby. ¿Isn't that all SW is about after all?

*Disclaimer*

Im not saying Xbox Live Gold users are being ripped off, Some do feel that way others think its completely justified. Just to be clear.

Me neither, they simply offer more options and keep their PSN selling point intact but you know in which direction SW spins everything.

All I know is if they offer what was all listed in that list I saw, then MS has a problem. Sony is already very very close to XBL and it's free, but now they will offer a lot of extra goodies for a cost and still offer the online gaming for free too! Yeah, definite win right there.

As long as online gaming is free, I really don't care what they do with the premium service. Heck, they could charge 200 bucks a month and I still wouldn't care as long as I get my free online gaming.

I said this before, but it's unfortunate that Sony may move towards the Xbox Live pure Profit model than the Xbox beingforced to move towards a cheaper or free model to retain their online base...we may be witnessing the industry being changed right before us all. Take note historians.

I reada report that the majoritiy of Xbox Live's fees/profit is utilized to actually aid other non profitable divisions within the company, including Zune. It's a pure money maker that consumers don't mind forking over.

Millions of Consumers have voted, and they would like to pay. It adds up too.

  1. How many years will I pay in the future?
  2. When exactly is Too much...what is the cut off point?
  3. How Many years Have I paid already?
  4. How much Have I actually spent all these years?

I don't think many think about it, or better yet, have their parents think about it if they are too young to generate a substantial amount of income. Teens have other issues at that stage in life.

Just like Xbox Live, there is no guarantee that this potential new PSN service profits will even be funneled back to PSN. Live taught me that, and it's their right, just as Sony can do whatever they feel with the potential PSN service funds. We would hope for massive changes/improvements, but there is no guarantee.

I would save the actual anger for when something is announced, seems preemptive at this point.

Look at it his way, YEAR THREE, STILL FREE! :)

You are probably right for most people, but I am not one of them.

I want Sony to charge for PSN so that a second sustainable business model is developed.

The future of gaming has less to do with hardware and more to do with online services. This should be obvious by now. The days of dumping hardware at a loss while praying for enough miracle hits on the software side to recover your total investment are coming to a close. Thank goodness.

In the console space, the entire notion that consumers should make bets years in-advance on how many? of what quality? games will make it to their hardware platform is ridiculous. The consumer should get access to all the games, each of which should stand on their own. You should not have to buy 3 consoles to get access to all the console games. Most of the money spent on hardware is completely pointless.

People whine about XBL at $50 year because they don't see where the industry is going. The problem is not the $50 year. The problem is that you currently have to buy hardware as well. Imagine paying $50 or $75 or $100 year for online, but you don't have to buy hardware and you have access to buy any game made because there is no platform restriction. Your entire perspective on paying for online will change once you realize this inevitability. The sooner we get a few workable business models moving in this direction the better. Unless you actually like paying for hardware over and over again for no good reason.

Nah, it's strictly business... smart business since a major competitor is earning nicely from the practice, it's only a mater of time before you must leverage the same kind of business model or maybe die on the vine. That's all it is. :P

Like for the millionth time. Online play, multiplayer, or however you want to call it will remain free. Only M$ charges for such a thing in order to milk their consumers and they fall for it. That's why they're called lemmings.

I think the PSN fees are better than the Live fees as: 1) You can still play online games for free 2) It can save you money if you use the PSstore

I feel that paying for XBL is justified as I really enjoy Xbox live, yet I still get bashed for it here in system wars. The reason for it? Ownage and consumer insecurity from PS3 fans so the way I see it it's just Karma

I want it because some of the features proposed are very interesting like the cloud storage space, and everything else that we already have will remain free so nothing changes for people not wiling to pay for additional features. It's a win-win situation imo.

Online will still be free but I think a premium account will just get you something like early access to demos, movies, and certain dlc.

So when a new map pack comes out for MW2 those without a premium will have to wait a week or 2 to download it.

So you won't get anything better or exclusive just early access to stuff that will become available to everyone soon enough.

And only Sony would charge for better customer service. Shouldn't they treat EVERYONE that has already paid for their products equal?

You are constantly going around and saying Sony would never milk their users like MS does, and actually cares about them. What happened? Looks like they only care about money, too, just like MS.

Better customer service? They are going to charge for services like many companies do thorugh the internet and that's what M$ should do too. When you buy software that connects to the internet you're paying the developer for the services that the software provides but you're not paying for online connectivity. Sony is attaching to the basic business model around these kind of things, only M$ charges for something as ridiculous and basic as connectivity for online play.

All I know is that as long as this premium service offers more and takes nothing away that I've been using already, then I'm game. I don't see the reason for mixed reactions from anyone. I don't think online gaming should cost money on top of what you have to pay for internet and the console itself. Yet if there are really solid features that enhance the experience online that compliment a free online service, then by all means.

Are you really not getting it or are you just being obtuse? The thing that you should get when you buy a product IS THE ONLINE MULTIPLAYER. Sony is not trying to charge for anything other than services for online play but not for online play itself. M$ is the one charging for something that everyone should get when they buy the product. They could charge for dedicated servers, cross-game chat, etc and that would make complete sense but including the connectivity on the fee is dumb.

As much as i hate this i've always known it was going to happen. In fact, im really suprised its happening in the 4th year of the PS3s cycle.

Those that are saying 'as long as it takes nothing away, its cool' should stop kidding themselves. Let me just paint a quick picture.

Before the 360s launch, Silver members were going to be allowed to play online only during weekends (for free). At launch, that got changed to silver members can play on selective weeks. And that eventually got changed into nothing. Then comes the late demo's, the waiting etc.

What im saying is yeah, we might not lose anything but updates that would have been universal (prior to the model) for all PSN users will probably now become subscription exclusive. Dissapointing but i am not in the slightest surpised.

Sony will charge for an optional premium service and make money with it while online multiplayer remains free, and because of it and lowering production costs the Ps3 will become profitable as a whole.

[QUOTE="kolkov01"] I feel that paying for XBL is justified as I really enjoy Xbox live, yet I still get bashed for it here in system wars. The reason for it? Ownage and consumer insecurity from PS3 fans so the way I see it it's just Karma

I addressed this in the op, only one out of the 4 main gaming systems available charges their users to play their own games online, The Xbox360's biggest selling point is a broad library of games that can be played online extensively. Nobody can use PSN for Ownage against you if you consider that you got your money's worth for those 50$ a year you've been paying for.

spot on, Agent some people want it for ownage:

but it will happen for the extra features, Sony won´t do it for the pure online aspect.

Will I get it? Most likely not, I just want to play online (the few times I actually do, I am way more a sp person)

I know for a fact that I will pay for the premium service at least once, maybe twice but I wont be forced to by being charged for the pure online aspect like you call it.

AgentA-Mi6
Good post Accounts for both sides of the wars and nails it spot on. if PSN gold is better than XBL Gold i will feel ripped off.

Right now, Sony is evaluating their options. We dont know what upcoming features will be premium and which ones wont, we should be happy more options is always better.

As long as online gaming is free, I really don't care what they do with the premium service. Heck, they could charge 200 bucks a month and I still wouldn't care as long as I get my free online gaming.fighter91

Pretty much this. I'd want demos and an online store as well.

Sony is trying to figure out a way to rape their customers without actually feeling it but they screwed up big time if the tiers their offering are gonna cause the problem dlc has caused for gaming. SEGMENTING YOUR POPULATION!!!!!! Yeah thats great the live features you get are good for everyone who has xbox live gold its either you have it or you dont. Sony is doing it backwards give them 2 tiers either pay or not pay and see what happens giving them 2 options to pay makes no sense and if your gonna make it cost alot of money you better have the content to back it up cause as of right now it aint worth $70 aint really worth $20 bucks right now and with that premium service MAKE MY DOWNLOADS GO FASTER!!!!!!

[QUOTE="SUD123456"]

[QUOTE="RedruM_I"] Better customer service? They are going to charge for services like many companies do thorugh the internet and that's what M$ should do too. When you buy software that connects to the internet you're paying the developer for the services that the software provides but you're not paying for online connectivity. Sony is attaching to the basic business model around these kind of things, only M$ charges for something as ridiculous and basic as connectivity for online play.RedruM_I

You are paying to play online because that is the future of gaming. Everyone is going to eventually do this. The sooner the better in fact.

OMG  How is that the future of gaming and how is that better? Are people getting so numb that they just hope that companies start milking them to oblivion because they think it's better? Really this is frankly pathetic and sad.

I already explained why in my first post on the first page. Feel freeto actually read it andthenmaybe you can post something other than an emotional rant.
