well, as sad as that may be, the original did loads for the genre even if hermits refuse to give it credit. it gave FPSs the shot in the arm they needed and brought forth a lot of mechanics that are still used to this day. and BTW, halo>>>>halo2what mechanics did Halo 2 introduce to the FPS genre?
throw grenades with the L trigger? ZOMG!!!
ive been throwing grenades with the G key on my computer for the past 10 years.
first of all, halo. not halo2. and maybe not so much introduce, but bring them to the mainstream. things such as large setpieces. recharging health. limited arms carry, vehicles sections blended with normal shooting sections, a decent story, fantastic MP, ect ect ect...it was the complete package and became the gold standard in FPS (non stratigic) design. i sure as hell can't think of much prior to 2001 that did any of those things (at least well)...PC games have had all those features since 1999.
examples??? OMG where to begin....
Large Setpiecies- too many to list.
Rechargin Health- Tribes
Limited Arms carry- pretty much every semi-tactical shooter out their
vehicals- tribes
decent story- half Life (duh)
fantastic MP- Wow....thats all I have to say....I can list dozens for this one.
thats all well and good but none of those games were the entire package AT ALL. and hl had a decent story? really? honostly?tbh i did 4get about tribes.
that would be implying that Halo was the perfect form of a shooter...which its not.
and yes HL did have a decent story, deffinetly far better than Halo's...in fact, Half Life was the first game to seriously bring storytelling into an FPS.
