According to Phil Harrison, PS3 will support upscaling for DVDs on PS3 in near future. With Blu-rays rolling out slowly, many users have asked for DVD upscaling. For those of you lucky enough own nice high definition television, regular DVDs just didn’t cut it as far as video resolutions. With the upscaling, you should get better picture quality. Of course it does not substitute for true Blu-ray experience. But, until you can replace your favorite DVDs Blu-rays, this will just have to do.

That's be nice. Sony has the great hardware in place, let's hope they can work on their software skills and make this a reality...

I think instead of adding stupid crap like this, they should just stick to making sure their ps3 is getting cheaper, so that they start making a profit.

Good news for Sony fans, but who cares here? can I get a heck yeah?

Still, Sony is trying, and that's counts somewhere.

Great hardware? If it had a decent scaler, the PS3 wouldn't need a fix.

How many updates did my 360 go thru this last 2 years?

Furthermore, the Wii can't do it.

What are you babbline about anyways.

In one thread, people say, "Sony make games, forget this stuff"

and now its comments like yours.

The 360 has had upscaling from launch, I believe. If Sony's going to be selling off their console as a multimedia machine, then they'd better have upscaling capabilities.

Sony never wanted upscaling for the PS3.

It was their business plan to Force Feed Cows with a Blu-Ray drive and to push Blu-Ray sale buy not allowing the PS3 to upscale DVD.

Numbers show that Blu-Ray will fail, for Gaming and Movies.

People are obviously forgetting that BluRay has many more applications outside of playing movies in your home...

It's coming to professional projectors and a cinema near you. After all, Sony is in the movie business. And I love it how Microsoft fans say that Sony is shoving a format down our throats when the Playstation 3 is more open source than the Xbox 360 could ever be. Industry standard hard drive, bluetooth, ability to run multiple operating systems.

But that's right, I forgot. There are no geeks and nerds around here. Everyone is a just a bunch of hardcore gamers...

The 360 only upscales DVD's over the VGA port.  Don't really understand why that's the case...

I think blu-ray is great. Hd-dvd is great. There is no need to slap one or the other. Im not buying into either until i see a more dominant format. However BluRay is my first choice for movies. If it sustains itself better than UMD. cause that had a great start also. It tanked.

Then I wonder why I see people throwing around numbers in black and white when talking about graphics...

It's really easy to tell who has deep hermit roots around here, by the way. And I guess the discussion about tech geeks and audio/visualphiles is over with now.

Because they don't know any better?  General specs and numbers are usually the most easily available information about console hardware, its the specific architecture details and interpretations of said details that are hard to come by.

What we don't know about Xenos, the RSX and the Cell are what really matters.

Look at the Radeon 9550. When it was announced and everyone got a look at the numbers, it was expected to fail as a budget card. But it still lives on as the X1050. No one could have predicted the architecture of that chip would have such longevity and be able to run a lot of modern games with low to mid details at the lower resolutions.

What about M$ with all those addons

I rather have add-ons than having things built into the machine. Like at least we don't have a manufacturer shoving down a "next-gen" format down our throats if we don't want it. We have the decision to choose what we want, and what we don't want. However, of course this is all a matter of preference. gnutux

Upscaling 480i content (DVD) is not nearly the same thing as having 1080p source content found on HD-DVD or Bluray. It's a band-aid at best.
