Oh god, they did remove vents.:?BioShockOwnz
Haha, your really stressing over this..my PS3 used to nuke because I had it in a tight spot, but now I got it on a table and it doesnt buzz at all(I assume that is what this will be like?). This thing should be fine since they removed a lot of the stuff that was in the front(all those uncessary ports). Also, airflow comes from the right side and back right side.
Anyway, 60gb PS3 is the best.

Haha, I know. I just don't get why they did it, even if it does have the 65nm cpu. It worries me.
I agree. 60GB is the perfect SKU.

Because its not pure software. The "software" emulation used the GS chip from the PS2. It only emulated the Features of the EE. In the 40gb, they dropped the GS.

lol i have 1st gen 60GB with EE chip in it, and im pretty happy hah
I'm glad they kept the same black, glossy design instead of the rumored matt-silver.
Oh, and I'll admit it, I like the red streams on the 40 GB box.:P

"Software emulation" is still achieved using hardware: namely the PS2's Graphics Synthesiser chip. The 80GB model had the Emotion Engine taken out while this Graphics Synthesiser chip was left in, hence why only about 40% of PS2 games are still backwards compatible. This new 40GB model contains neither the EE or the GS, making any PS2 emulation impossible, even through a future online update.

Interesting. They must really be cutting costs everywhere they can. That pretty much eliminates the 40GB for me.
SEE!! no ps2 support!! What crap!! this system is a joke. what a waste. ill wait for a price drop on the real ps3. .
40gb ps3 FAILS!!

why can't more powerful hardware be programed to play games designed for less powerful hardware? I don't get it, I thought software could tell the PS3 what to do for PS2 games using only its PS3 hardware.

Well, the way I see it, the minority of people complaining about a lack of BC is considerably better than the majority of people complaining about the high price. It's a trade-off people shouldn't have to make, but it's still an improvement on the situation beforehand. Not to mention this will improve PS3 sales, which satisfies the third-parties and entices more of their support to the system, along with persuading them to keep high-profile games exclusive. The 40GB model could have a huge impact on this war.

That's a very good point. It's too bad the other hardware is so expensive to manufacture. Since the PS2 was so popular there are tons of people out there with huge libraries of PS2 games that haven't made the jump. And a lot of them probably won't realize it isn't B/C until they get home and throw one in.

It's not as simple as that. The PS3's chip architecture is very different from a lot of other chips on the market - including the PS2's - which can produce a world of problems. Some PS2 games could probably run on PS3 hardware, but the number of glitches and issues simply would not be worth it. Why do you think only about 250 Xbox games can be played through the Xbox 360 hardware?

That's why the onus is on Sony to make it very clear that it can't play PS2 games. If they don't do this, then they can expect their switchboards to light up with hundreds of angry phonecalls. Straight-to-the-point marketing should be top of their agenda for this thing, and that's not just for the sale's sake.

See, that's another thing I like. Sony isn't trying to ignore this, or downplay it. They're making sure people are aware, and holding their ground on this.
Bad thing is though, and I don't blame for Sony for this, is that the no PS2 BC label is on the back of the box. And let's face it, the majority of people aren't going to see this. I mean, over half of them didn't notice the Blu-Ray symbol ON THE FRONT. So, it's pretty certain that they won't see that label on the back.
