Poll Picking a poison: Mass Effect: Andromeda vs Fallout 4? (94 votes)

Mass Effect: Andromeda 19%
Fallout 4 81%

On this forum (and other places), two Action RPG's from two of the most popular developers in the genre (Bioware, Bethesda) have gotten a LOT of flak, while one did at least get some damn good reviews over the other.

With that, I must ask, which, if you had the choice, would you rather pick. Mass Effect: Andromeda or Fallout 4?

Me personally, the frustrating design of Andromeda made me WANT to go back and beat FO4, which I honestly like more as a game.

I'll buy Mass Effect: Andromeda eventually. In 2018 at the earliest, when I'm no longer pissed off at EA. During a sale. A deep one.

As for Fallout 4, meh. The more I saw of the game post-release, the less interested I became. Probability of buying is likely next to zero.

I'm a bigger fan of the Mass Effect universe and space lore in general, so Mass Effect Andromeda gets my vote even if it's got some problems.

Haven't played ME: Andromeda, but considering how cheap fallout 4 is, it's still worth playing imo.

I would go with Fallout 4 although I did still enjoy Mass Effect: Andromeda but was just disappointed with it in relation to the other Mass Effect games.

Oh I would pick FO4 over ME: Andromeda any day.

There are issues with FO4 yeah, but there are plenty of good things too. It utterly suck as an RPG; but as an open world FPS it is not really all that bad. The story is hit or miss, but the setting is decent enough the story is fairly good, just not conveyed well enough, and somehow the scale of everything felt smaller then it should be. Characters are ranging from average to pretty good, and I had a lot of fun with the game all things considered. It had no game breaking bugs that I noticed. The settlement building felt fairly pointless, and time consuming, and the constant radio messages for help grinded my gears. The ways things were set up, most weapons and armor never really felt special (with few exceptions). All in all the basic mechanics were improved a good deal over FO3 and NV, but the map and dungeon layout felt like a step back, and the game gave little reason to explore, outside of trying out alterations to your weapons. I also miss the RPG elements of FO games of old, most systems feel skindeep and somehow shallow. But FO3 suffered from the same issues, and in some ways NV too. Added bonus are mods, which can correct at least some of the issues.

Andromeda however.. Oooh where to start. The quests were often "meh" at best, the characters ranged from horrible to "meh" I actively loathed the main character (at least the male Ryder, doubt the female would have been better), story was a mess. The best thing about the game was the combat, which was let down by enemy types, and lets face it, combat was just average for a 3rd person action game. A good deal of potential, that felt and was rushed. Bugs did not exactly help it either. On its own I consider it a fairly poor game, but considering that it is a Mass Effect game, makes it all the more depressing.

Fallout 4. The only reason? It's insanely moddable.

Andromeda is probably a bit better game if we count only vanilla. But, I don't know, I gave up on both after about 25 hours if we are counting only vanilla game playthrough.

Despite the issues I had with Mass Effect Andromeda and what it means for the franchise as a whole, I still enjoyed the time I had with it despite no desire to play it again. That being said, I'd go with Fallout 4 if you're looking for bang for your buck, especially with the multiple DLC expansions it has, just the base game itself should keep you busy for a long time.

Andromeda get's too much hate

Fallout 4 doesn't get enough hate

They're both incredibly disappointing in the context of their entire franchise, in the scope of all the games in their series.

I'm just going to leave it at that.

I'm playing Andromeda right now and I'm actually enjoying it.

It doesn't come close to the trilogy, but I went in with zero expectations due to the negativity surrounding it and I've been pleasantly surprised. It's not a great game, by any means, but there is some enjoyable stuff in there and it's certainly not as bad as the initial response made it seem, which I think more came from the fact people where still pissed as the ending for 3 and wanted Andromeda to be ME2 again, where as it's more like the original, which includes been a mess at points.

As for Fallout 4. I got it at launch played for a few days, and never returned. I didn't even finish the main quest. The world feels so barren and lifeless, which makes sense in some ways for the setting, but 3 and especially New Vegas where full of life and charm, this had none of that. The combat was weird, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. It was just bland.

I'd pick Andromeda over Fallout 4.

I haven't played either one (so I'm not voting), but my impression was that Mass Effect fans (for the most part) really enjoyed Andromida. Similarly, I was under the impression that Fallout 3/New Vegas fans (for the most part) really enjoyed Fallout 4. At least, my best IRL friends confirmed this theory.

Considering that I enjoyed all the games I just referenced, I'm guessing I'd probably enjoy both of these, too. Unlike most folks, I even liked exploring planets in the original Mass Effect. Unlike most folks, I liked Fallout 3 more than New Vegas (I was more engaged in the story).

Fallout 4, even on consoles, doesn't break itself. So that's kind of a default win.

As for game quality, if you're expecting an actual RPG out of Fallout 4 you're barking at the wrong tree man. If you enjoy the action (yes it's more action/shooter than anything else) the game does provide, Fallout 4 becomes a nice playground to make things go "boom!".

Haven't played Andromeda yet, but if it's anything like ME2 and ME3, it probably has like 2 hours of cutscenes and 8 hours of conversations, and another 15 hours of "scanning" minigames in between 3-4 hours of actual MEAT.

I enjoy the Mass Effect universe, just wish it were more action-oriented.

Fallout 4 by contrast, surprised me very pleasantly by being "more meat, low carb" kind of game.

I think the mark of a good game is being able to tell a story WHILE you are playing it, not before and after each mission.

For that reason alone, FO4 rocks and Andromeda (probably) kinda sucks.

I put in hundreds of hours in Fallout 4 before I finished the story quest. I followed it up with Fallout 3 which I finished earlier this year. So now, I'm taking a break from Fallout even though I also have New Vegas waiting.

I've had ME 1-3 and I just can't get into any of them, much more ME 4. I might if they had a first-person view. I like the switchable first-person/3rd-person views of the Bethesda games.

I should really get to New Vegas though... never played that one.

I replayed it a year later, streaming it for my friends as I did. So a few things happened:

  • I played it separated from my own expectations around the time of FO4's release (which were colored by The Witcher 3)
  • I went into it with lowered expectations to begin with
  • I played it 'co-op with friends' in a manner of speaking which let me have fun with it on its own terms and merits

I still think it's a horrible RPG, but as a dumb open world loot shooter, I think it works really well. The core gameplay loop is also ridiculously fun, so it has that going for it as well.

I would link to the thread, but I can't find it :P

Fallout 4, easily.

It's already a decent shooter, just not great at allowing the player to role play. If your into the base building survival stuff it's even more fun. Add some good mods and you've got yourself a great game.

I've tried to play ME:A twice now and quit both times within 10-20 hours. It's just boring..... sadly.

I'm not much of a fan of the ME series in general, so the comparison for me is easy. Having said that, FO4 is a good, even great game. The flak it got around here, and other places, is stupid. People just love to hate on Bethesda.

I bought both games. I loved ME1-3 and I loved FO 3 and NV. Played about 8 hours of F4 before I lost interest and never went back. Played like 4 hours of ME:A and the same thing happened. I keep telling myself i'll go back and complete them, but just can't. So i guess FO4 is the better choice.

Fallout 4 was miles ahead of Mass Effect Andromeda. I found one incredibly disappointing, and one not so much. There is no contest. ME A was so bad it caused the death of a whole development team.

This post is a little disjointed. Sorry...my face is tired from...everything.

I get some of the complaints behind Fallout 4, but I still find it a really fun and overall great game. However, despite the issues some had with that game, it's still LEAGUES above Andromeda. It's easily the worst of the Mass Effect series and just a bad game in general. And let's face it, they knew about most of those facial animation glitches and bugs before launch and released it anyways. People often make jokes about Bethesda's glitches, but Andromeda's glitches were the thing people remember most about Andromeda, solely because everything else is really underwhelming.

yea thats pretty much how I feel.

FO4 just had some great atmosphere and exploration, which has always been that series' strength (imo). ME:A kinda dropped the ball on a lot of the writing, characters and narrative stuff which is supposed to be that series strength, though I did end up enjoying the gameplay side of it more than I expected.

Fallout 4 is the better game. It can be knocked for being a little too samezy with it's predecessor, but the advancement with settlement building and the overall Bethesda style rpg aesthetic is solid throughout... Though maybe not as inspiring as it once was.

Mass effect Andromeda is a step back in almost everything that made mass effect a coveted franchise.

I enjoyed Andromeda more, but that's because I prefer Mass Effect. I still think FO4 is the better game.
