Arguably the best console ever made.

Why? The games.

Within a year of its United States release, the PS2 had more AAA games then any of the 3 current gen consoles.

Launch date: 26th of October, 2001

Date first AAA game was awarded on Gamespot: 23rd of October, 2001

Oct 23 - Madden 2001 - 9.1

Oct 25 - Tekken Tag Tournament - 9.6

Oct 30 - SSX - 9.4

Nov 24 - FIFA 2001 - 9.0

Dec 7 - Guitar Freaks 3rd Mix & DrumMania 2nd Mix - 9.0 (Japan only game)

30 Jan - Rayman 2 Revolution - 9.1

So was the Playstation 2 really that awesome, or were gamespot overwhelmed by the next gen prettiness?

And more importantly: Where the heck are all the AAA games this generation?

But yes it did have the most wicked games last gen which is why i wont get rid of it ;)

i am thinking of getting a ps2 slim as my original looks like it might die soon :(

The PS2 was an outstanding console.

This gen has just started off really poorly imo, but I completely expect it to become as great as last gen, if not even better. I think Nintendo are gonna make some great gems for the Wii and I bet Sony get their act together and show the PS3 in a much more positive light to consumers soon.

Last generation I used to have a 25", twenty-five year old CRT TV that my PS2 and Xbox hooked up to.

This generation I have new 60", LCoS widescreen TV that my 1080p native PS3 hooks up to.

Yeah, I definately like this generation more.

I agree, some of them are over rated, could say the same thing about some games this gen (Warioware, PDZ..)

Tony Hawks was a great game, even if it wasn't 10.. it was still high AAA.

But 4 should have got 11 if 3 deserved a 10. (I like defending Tony Hawks..)

That doesn't sound right. So you like this generation more because you finally got yourself a new TV? You do realise you could have had a new TV with your PS2 and Xbox as well, right?

PS2 was a great console and still sells well today because of low price along with a tremendous library.

Now if you pay attention to that games list of AAA's notice that most of the games are third party...does this mean that the third party developers are still dealing with the humungous leap in technology from last gen to this gen? I think this is a great indicator as to why the 360 continues to get better games and ports than the PS3, because the leap in hardware was less from original Xbox to 360.

I also think that Gamespot's reviews have evolved and become more strict in their views of games (PDZ not withstanding).

I think the blame lies with inept and lazy third party developers that are not willing to invest the time and resources to make great games any more. Why should they when they can make some jumbled,gimmikymini game crap for the Wii and get a much better return on their investment? Just my two cents.

Lemmings keep going back to the bad points with the hardware, why can't we go back to the rest of the good times? Lemmings would do the same thing if their console had actually been worth something.

The PS2 was at the point THE worst launch window console ever.

You want to see how pathetic this gen truly is, look at the Dreamcasts launch window, or the Saturn's, PSone's, and N64's (Japanese).

uh, Tekken Tag is outstanding.

Oh wow a couple of those games are overrated. The main problem I had with the PS2 was the controllers and the fact that there are a million chinese fighting games. But yeah it was a great system but the PS3 won't be.

360 has a lot of AAA games how is it getting put to shame?

Bioshock, Halo 3, Perfect Dark Zero, Forza 2,Rainbow SixVegas, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Gears of War, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter

Plus Mass Effect and Orange Box are going to get AAA within the next month for sure.
