so we all know we can go out and buy nintendo 64's. dreamcasts, xbox, ps2. super nintendos, and all the other systems unnamed for 20-30 bucks. the question is with the amount of technology in the xbox and especially the playstation. do you guys ever seeing these systems drop below the 199 mark in the next 5 years?? ( even when the new sony and microsoft product come out, idont see these consoles dropping significantly) any opinions?

ps3 is underpriced...xbox is just right, but playing on live for more than a year will make xbox cost more than ps3

Aside from the PS3's Blu-Ray players, there isn't much that distances the consoles from those of the past. I think the 360 Arcade will reach $199 this year and the Wii and PS3 will follow suit sometime after. They will follow a relatively similar pricing curve as their brethren did.

Absolutely, if it weren't for Halo 3 and the rest of the 360's big 07 lineup the premium would probably have had a price cut to $250-300, which would put the Arcade under $250. I would expect to see the Arcade/whatever-the-hell-they'll-be-calling-it to be under $199 by late 08-early 09. The PS3 is a bit more iffy, between Sony's price slashing, SKU strategy and component costs it will likely take a bit longer to drop below the $199 price point, but not much. You have to remember that at the $199 price point sales increase dramatically, so both MS and Sony are gunning for it.

good responses guys. what about 10 years from now? do you think these systems will be at the 30 dollar mark?? its just hard to see these systems drop to that point with the technology that they have.

I bet before this gen is over PS3 will drop to $200 and 360 to $150. This is based upon nothing but what the last gen consoles dropped to and a guess.

By then the technology will be absolutely archaic, just as the N64 is right now. Remember that the density of transistors (and hence the performance of chips) doubles roughly every two years.

Edit: Also remember that the PS3 and 360 were already beaten in terms of performance when they were released (by then-current PCs).

To me it looks like the 360 is trying to upgrade it's machine to match the ps3 in performance (xbox "ultimate" to featuresome of ps3 features that were missing) and Sony is continuallydowngrading it's sku to get it's price to compete with the 360. In the end I think the prices will be very close to eachother. I'm glad I got the OG 60gb.

too bad theyre gonna put in HD-dvd..which is gonna suck

i think they should just make live free...im pretty sure that'll attract more buyers than just adding some bells and whistles to the machine

Well, the Wii and the XBox 360 can definitely get down to $150 within 5 years. Not sure if the PS3 will get that low since it has a 10yr plan. Once Nintendo and Microsoft releases their new system in the next 3-5 years these current gen systems will probably drop to $99. I'm surprised the PS2 isn't already $99.
