now it all makes sense why the ps3 costs so much. You can teleport hardware upgrades through the internet.

This is truly amazing, this is the most innovative idea ever! I mean, you will never have to purchase a new system if they are able to teleport hardware into your system.

i think he meant as it was explained, that the OS will leave a smaller footprint in the memory, possibly leaving more memory available for devs to work with.

Not add more memory, but free up more memory from the OS: "a reduced OS memory footprint is a common inclusion with PS3 updates."

makes sense the OS takes alot of memory, they reduced the OS size, the 360 got "more" ram when they udgraded to 1gb dev kits, because it take about 20mb to make check it for glitches abd in the 512 days they could not do it without not having 20mb of ram not used on the 360 from the retail version.

I saw this on N4G.

Whats happened is sony has coded the XMB and OS better, so it takes up less ram. This mean that there is more available for the games so Naugty dog has been able to gfive the game some texture upgrades (seen in the E3 Vs later cutscene showing pic on N4G page)

As time goes on the XMB will take up less ram, and so games will look better.

Personally I think sony should do what MS did with that mini toolbar for in game. Theres so much stuff on the XMB which shows up in game which doesnt need to.

Well, what the article is actually saying is that with the update, more RAM is available, because "a reduced OS memory footprint is a common inclusion with PS3 updates.".

Since the OS is using less memory, there is more available.

Now the only downside to this is that a publisher who wants to take advantage of it needs every PS3 owner to have been updated. But this may or may not be an issue if the update can be included on the disc.

UPDATE: sorry to sound repetitive. this has already been answered by the time i finished

Does this mean I can download everything I need to play a 360 into my PS3? Because if it is, this is the greatest system update in history.

I was expecting "teh power of the cell" as a joke but this is also equally funny. I think what you meant is the OS has been has been updated and improved effiency wise so there is a little more RAM for developers. I think that's what it meant anyway.

To everyone talikng about hardware teleportation: Read the Article!

The update freed more ram from the OS and can now be used for games, therefore, allowing developers to have "more ram" to work with.

Common in firmware updates, improving the OS to free up more memory.

so they are going to increase the ram by 5mb? I always thought the biggest problem with the PS3 was that the memory was segmented whereas the memory on the 360 is unified. I don't know if increasing the ram by a couple of mb is going to make a difference (it never hurts, but i dont think it'll make much of a diff).

5MB can hold a lot of code. a game isn't all about gigs worth of textures.

No, what they had at E3 was the old amount of ram, the slight upgrade noticed is after OS footprint was lowered.

As of Firmware 1.8 on PS3, the OS uses 74MB of RAM. The old 360 dashboard used 32MB of RAM. Proof - http://kotaku.com/gaming/rearview-mirrors-ahead/sony-adds-new-features-to-ps3-sdk-lowers-memory-requirements-292956.php The PS3's OS footprint has probably been decrease several times since firmware 1.8 which was in 2007. The 360's OS footprint probably increased a bit because of NXE.

Yeah, but it can't pass the 32 MB that MS initially reserved. Otherwise, launch titles that allocate up to that limit would stop working. Even if NXE uses more RAM (which I don't doubt), it'd have to fit within the initial allocation.
