Now, I honestly have no idea what the differences between the two GPUs are. All I know is based off the knowledgey goodness that is Wikipedia. Alot of the time people throw around the fact that the Xbox 360 has a superior GPU, but I'm wondering why exactly?

From what I've read RSX 'Reality Synthesizer' actually seems better since it has a speed of 550 Mhz while the Xenos in the 360 has a speed of 500Mhz. What exactly makes the Xbox 360 have a 'better' graphics output according to the fanboys of the console? I know there are many factors including RAM with the 360 having a unified RAM structure compared to the seperate RAM structure of the PS3 but I'm still not sure why the 360 fans throw out the 360 as having a better GPU, if it's the ram then surely doesn't the 360 have better RAM and not a better GPU as to me it seems that the GPU of the PS3 appears to be faster :|

360's unified architechture makes it easier to develope for and to use efficiently. PS3's GPU does have more brute power but no dev is ever going to use it as efficiently as 360's

QFT. The 360 is built like a PC where some parts are really important. The PS3 is designed where all parts work well with eachother. Along with the GPU doing graphics, the Cell also preforms Graphic calculations. It's all about how a game is programmed. This is why exclusives always look better than multiplats. They're made to take advantage of the hardware.

yeah but imo uncharted is better looking

I think Gears of War is technically better, but the grey/brown/black colour scheme spoils it. I prefer Uncharted because it's brighter and I think the animation and lighting is more fluid. Gears of War has superior textures in my opinion :)

I have played both, and uncharted definitly looks better. Especially the final boss level.

uncharted has way better poly count, animations, lighting though.

and some of the textures and shaders are amazing in uncharted too.

The last level on the train was a very large area, you had to fight a lot of flying enemies around the train and they spanned the length of the train so it was a pretty massive field of play.

On Paper, the PS3 has a Better CPU and GPU, however, its a challenge to use them efectively because 360 was designed for easy deving. The PS3s CPU and GPU were designed to be one coherint well oiled machine Tag Team.

Look at what that did for the PS2. I remember when first party devs were saying they were only using only 30% of the PS2. Where did the other 70% go? What makes you think they're not blowing smoke up your backside again?

One of the greatest game devs, Valve, said it best when they said the PS3 is a waste of time.

Why don't you?

The Xbox 360's GDDR3 RAM is clocked at 700MHz. Its effective transmission rate is 1.4GHz, but so is the PS3's 256MB of GDDR3 RAM. That's why it's called GDDR3. It's double data rate RAM.

RSX Vertex Limited? Really informative thread. A couple actual devs discuss their experience with both platforms. Mainly goes between the Ninja Theory (of HS fame) guys and Joker (some multiplat dev guy.) Summary: 360 has the easier to use gpu. It gives better performance relative to the RSX given the same 3d graphics data. The Cell plus RSX may give better performance through creative programming (preculling and spu shaders and such.)

unified sahders verses vertex shaders, shader clock on the 360 is faster then then the ps3, but the ps3 has a faster core clock, as well the 360 has a higher bandwidth which it can send data to and from the gpu, the gpu it self has a high bandwidth compared to the ps3 as well the 360's gpu can push more polys, but what holds it back is the architecture is proto type dx 10 which can't do dx10, just dx 9 at best conditions that are never reached, the ps3 uses open gl which is optimzed for pc gpus, and the ps3's rsx is very close to a 7800, actually practially the same and the 7800 can do awsome open gl work, but the 360s gpu is close to a x1900x, which is from ati and is better then nvidias 7800, but they are very close, just the x1900x does worse open gl work but better dx work....yeah...

DX10 SUCKS though. There's no way you'd get decent framerates on the (basically R500) xenon with DX10 when the R600 chokes on it. Its better that it has the cut down DX9.5 version. Also, Sony recommends NOT using open GL. It can, but they recommend using their proprietary api. I don't remember the name.

That example backfires on you because the PS2 showed what it could "really" do in the previous 2 years before 360 was released.

Take God of War 1 for example. The game showed devs out there that the PS2 still had "Hiddin Powah". When you think they squeezed the juice out of the PS2, along comes GoW2.

You know I have a PS3 and a Computer, comparing Graphics in consoles is kind of silly in my view I mean there is a difference PS3 has a slight edge due to its 500 dollar architect. The cell processor is very very powerful the PS3 is very complicated and has a lot of edges on the 360 but at the same time the only people who know how to use them are Sony developers themselves on all multi-plats 360 looks better because how simple and easy it is to program. PS3 does have more power but at the same time what developers are going to want to take twice as long for a PS3 game that's why they usually port the 360 version. The PS3 is sophisticated and rather harsh to develop for, better graphical capabilities from a hardware comparison stand point, yes Will all developers end up using its edges no...

If you know even the most basic information about graphics cards the number of pipelines is one of the major factors that separates budget cards like the 8500 from medium range cards like the 8600 or the 8600 from the 8800 for that matter. The advantage is not so clear cut because of the unified nature of the pipelines in the xenos but anandtech and other hardware sites have suggested the xenos does have the advantage.

Just FYI "pixel pipelines" is sort of an archaic term and doesn't really apply anymore, especially for GPU's with unified shaders. That term was from back when there wwas a 1:1 ratio between shaders, ROP's, and texture units. RSX actually has 24 pixel shaders which is something different, while Xenos has 48 unified shaders. With the newer GPU's like the 8800 and X2900 you're not even talking shaders anymore, but rather ALU's. (Nvidia prefers to call them "stream processors", but they're not really processors)

The RSX has something like 24 pixel pipelines and 16 vertex shaders along with a 256 bit bus. There is NO way to spin it to say that the RSX is more powerful than the Xenon, cause its not. Its not blown away, its still the same generation video card after all, but it is less flexible and powerful. The PS3 has to use Cell to streamline the data being fed to the RSX in order to make stuff like Uncharted and GT5:P possible.

Good dev's make good games, regardless of the console they make it on, simple as that.

In regards to raw power, the developers for Burnout said the PS3 GPU is more powerful than the 360, however the 360 is MUCH easier to make games for.

So according to those developers, it seems that some games look better simply because developers have not really learned how to use the hardware Sony threw in the PS3.

GDDR3 runs at twice the rated speed. (Double Data Rate), so in effect, the PS3's VRAM also runs at 1.4Ghz.

Uncharted is a more colorful game but from a pure graphical aspect, textures and all, it is flat out wrong of you to say uncharted looks better than gears...
