Yeah, backwards compatibility this gen was an absolute joke. Let's hope the trend doesn't continue...........
It better be backwards compatible...

I'm guessing it will be digital downloads and streaming....so by backwards compatibile, they'll probably make you re-buy PS1, PS2 and PS3 games via PSN.
Nearly everyone in the U.S. would have to have a high speed internet connection within the next 4 years for that to be possible. Don't see it happening.............

BC becomeing harder to maintain each gen, only thing that can save BC is using same CPU architecure in next console, but emulating SPE might be a problem.
Yeah I'm sure we all buy next gen consoles to play last gen games... Makes sense. :S..........

Its a neat feature that's beneficial to those who missed previous gen games.

I don't see that happening, they would lose alot of there base. Alot of people refuse to pay for Digital Downloads.

I have played quite a few last gen games that I missed out on. It's actually quite annoying when a console maker decides to omit the feature. It's even more annoying when a console maker includes the feature but later removes it because "we don't need it." *glares at Sony*
If anything, this new PS system won't be BC with PS3 games. That will make consumers even more angry than the announcement about no PS2 BC on newer PS3 models.

Yeah, Sony really pissed me off when they threw BC out the window. That decision ultimately made me hold back on getting the PS3.

Nearly everyone in the U.S. would have to have a high speed internet connection within the next 4 years for that to be possible. Don't see it happening... US has an broadband internet penetration rate of about 30% thats like 90 million people. Thats A LOT of people ....... it'll be even higher in 2 years especially with Biden funding $182 million on broadband access. Also once fiber optics hits major residential areas like Greater Boston in the next few years ..... internet speeds/access are going to skyrocket.what happens to the PS1 or PSN games we buy on the PSN? Can we transfer them when the PS3 is dead to a PC or PS4? Thats my question.caseypayne69im guessing the PS4 will also have a HDD ............ they'll probably allow you to transfer from PS3 to PS4 or swap HDD's or even make an accessory that allows you to connect your HDD to the PS4 w/o the PS3.

Even for weaker then CPU's then Cell, PS1 software emulation is piece of cake so every future Playstation will propebly include PS1 comatibility... The true quastion is PS2.

Yep, this is a major reason why I'm so hesitant to purchase a PS3. It seems that Sony releases a new model every few months and I have no way of predicting what features they will add or remove. If they are willing to remove features already present on the console, what is to prevent them from making you get a subscription for PSN, etc.? Sony has not stuck to one solid plan at all this generation, which makes me wary of buying their system. First they changed the Sixaxis to Dualshock 3, then they removed backwards compatibility, now there are rumors that they will make you pay for online, they have a new model of the PS3 every few months, and they are also releasing the PS Wand. How the **** do they expect me to put my faith in them and spend $300+ on their console?

To play ps3 games? I think it's guaranteed to do that.[QUOTE="Shirokishi_"]

Well they arent as inconsistant as you may think but yes, they are inconsistant.
Personally the PS3 was a leap of faith and Im not really happy with it but w/e, Ill grow to like it.
Sony didn't say that. They did say this. It pretty much means no PS4 for atleast several more years.all that means is that when the next system comes out they will still support the ps3....just like the ps2 is having a 10 year life cycle....[QUOTE="Trmpt"][QUOTE="Bigboi500"]
"still many years away", that made me very happy. No need for hurrying into next gen just yet.

The author of that article probably isn't really up to date on recent events, but Intel has dropped the ball on Larrabee on December 4th this year. Larrabee will no longer be commercialized for home use. The key word is 'home use'. Implementing it for ps4 may not directly be home use, but Intel's declaration basically implied Larrabee's failure in the GPU/CPU fusion market, and I doubt supporting such a product will be of benefit to Sony or the consumer market.
Basically, if Larrabee were fit in any shape or form to be a suitable processor for a future ps4, Intel wouldn't have dropped the ball so fast. The fact that they did means that either the Larrabee project is costing intel more than they can bare, or the performance of Larrabee is a severe lackluster compared to the initial forecast.

I hate when people say this. It really "grinds my gears" to no end. BC is something everyone wants no matter what you say. Look at PC. You can play games from 20 years ago and that is what pc gamers like. They know that they can enjoy not only new up coming games, but also games they fell in love with year and years ago.
Why not have BC? Do you really think that the PS2/360/Wii/and other cd based systems will be working in 10 years when you want to sit down and play an old game? I really dont think so. Consoles break far too often and are extremely unreliable. So Im hoping that developers start making BC more of a priority.

Not only that but it was idiotic to think that Sony would abandon it's prized hd format, that they sacrificed the PS3 for, for digital distribution.[QUOTE="shoryuken_"]

Ironic because that's the reason they took it out, people just weren't buying PS3's.*sigh*Online play on PSN will always be FREE.The new model PS3's are only going get bigger HDD's and any brain dead tool can upgrade their HDD drive.Wands? dude just get a Wii.First they changed the Sixaxis to Dualshock 3, then they removed backwards compatibility, now there are rumors that they will make you pay for online, they have a new model of the PS3 every few months, and they are also releasing the PS Wand.

I really hope this gen lasts another 5 years before anything new is released. I think if this happens then we can expect some real amazing games to come over the next few years.

Sony still has to try to get some cash out of the PS3, so there is no way they'll bring out another expensive system early.[QUOTE="Trmpt"] Sony didn't say that.stereointegrity
Backward compatibility to me personally is useless. I have a BC PS3, but stay far away from putting anything last gen inside of it. They all look like hideous garbage on my LCD. THe only CRT I have left in my house is a tiny little piece of crap 19 inch, only good if I had a telescope. But for those who use their old TV's, I can see how BC would be something I would definitely want.

Also wouldn't happen yet because most ISP's have imposed download limitations, which would directly affect the cash flow of game developers returns, especially with larger sized games. One extra large game would max out ones download limit, and allow them to only purchase one game that month instead of the 3 or 4 they 'could' be buying on disc at the store.."still many years away", that made me very happy. No need for hurrying into next gen just yet.

This, life-span =/= we won't make any console in this time. Also note that PS2 life-span is still valid.
