Nintendo changes its controllers every generation, microsoft changed its controllers 3 times, playstation controllers remained the same aside from adding analog sticks during the ps1 era. Till this day the ps controllers are the most comfortable to me, small and compact. not bulky huge and nerdy like some controllers.

Great thread!

Completely disagree. Not a fan of the tiny controller, with it's horrible triggers and close arse thumb sticks.

To me, yeah the PS controllers are great, and I dont really want them to change it for the PS4. Im pretty sure they will change it for the PS4 but atleast keep the way the buttons are placed and the way the are. And if they do change it, I hope they have the option to use the DS3 controller on the PS4

To me the Playstation controllers are the best, they're very nice all-around controllers. I like the 360's controller design more though, but I don't like the button placement and find it more difficult to aim with it, but that' just because I'm not accustomed to it. All-in-all I wouldn't mind using both controllers, I like the feel of the Playstation controller, but the 360 controller also feels good and looks a lot better IMO. The only thing holding me back from the 360 is games, if Microsoft had kept Halo, Gears, Forza, all the better multiplats, mass effect, and more great new IP's; then I'd be a PS3 and a 360 owner. They started the gen off very strong, but are going weak as time goes on, if they had kept with the motives of the beginning of this gen, then I would have went for the 360. I hope that Microsoft will aim more for the core audience with the next xbox, but I don't see that happening, in fact they'll stray farther from the core audience and more towards casuals and kinect. It's a shame. Can't they see that when they started off, everybody went for 360 because it had tons of great games and focused on quality? Xbox 360 was a huge success at first, tons of great exclusive games, third party deals, plans for future, expanding experience with XBL, etc. Now people are buying PS3's, all the lems I knew before are soon turning into cows because Microsoft isn't the same as they were at the start of this gen.

They are good but far from perfect, the good old GC is better IMO.

Nevertheless, they are without a doubt, the best controllers for fighters.

Overall the DualShock is probably my favorite as well. There are things I like about the 360 pad more, but overall the Dual Shock wins. The Gamecube controller was very good, but had some really dumb design choices.

I pretty much like both the GCN and PS controllers the best.

Honestly, I wish Nintendo had never got so obsessed with gimmicks because the Wii Remote is no where near as nice and convenient as the GCN controller is. When I play Wii games I prefer ones that let me use the GCN controller.

The analogs are way too loay and too close to each other for my personal taste, but I guess what applies here is to each their own, I guess.

Disagree, it's too small, the triggers are just wrong and the analog stick placement is off.

It was made by slapping some analog sticks on the bottom of a PS1 controller mid generation. It's too bad that Sony hasn't updated their controller for the 21st century, it's the main thing that puts me off playing my PS3 over my 360.

I like the Dual Shock 3 a lot, but I'm a really big guy(6'5") and my hands are huge, so the Dual Shock 3 can sometimes get annoying with it's small size. If only they made a XXL version of the DS3 it would be pretty much perfect for me. That's the only problem that I really have with it.

I love when people say Sony always copies, but ignores the fact that Microsoft and Nintendo both redid their controllers not once, but twice to make them MORE like the Dualshock.

I will say that the DS3 is a downgrade in quality, and needs to be improved, and that the 360 controller is better, but at the end of the day, it is just a more refined Dualshock 3. Next gen the Dualshock 4 will most likely perfect everything wrong with the DS3, and finally shut people the hell up about it. The way people talk about the damn thing you would think its the friggin N64 controller or something.

Lol, that Classic Controller is the exact same thing as the PS3 controller. CONSPIRACY!!! :P (No, not really, the triggers are better and the formation of the controller is different)

You know those 4 buttons on the right side of your controller? Sony, Microsoft AND Nintendo copied Sega. :P

They stuck with it because the fans demanded it. Everybody complains that Sony doesnt do "teh innovationz", and that was because change wasnt needed, nor wanted. If the Dualshock needed change so bad, then why did Microsoft redo their controller TWICE, to make it more like the Dualshock 2? (Xbox Controller S, and the 360 controller). Nintendo also redid theirs twice (Gamecube controller, and Classic controller).

I plan to get a Wii within the next week, just to catch up on some games, but Im starting to feel like nintendo is just making all these "innovations" just for the sake of making "innovations" (read: gimicks). Their console will never capture the core market as well as the competition, so they need a gimick to fall back on, and make it look "differernt". That is always how nintendo has worked.

That was how Nintendo saved gaming from the gaming crash of 1983. People looked at videogames as something nerdy and loserish, for computer geeks, but Nintendo changed how people percieved it. They packaged their NES with a robot and a gun and told people it wasnt a video game console, but an "entertainment system" and marketed it as a toy.

The buttons and analog sticks are way too close together, and I can't even properly grip the thing... The PS2 controller was fine but they screwed up the PS3 by adding marshmallow shoulder buttons (L2,R2) -.-

I prefer the 360 controller. it'd be flawless if the D-Pad was actually a proper d-pad...

GameCube had the best controller

your forgetting about the Xbox "Controller S". They redesigned the original Xbox controller, because it was too big, and made it smaller, also changing the positions of the black and white buttons. (I also cant be quoted because I havent used an original xbox controller in probably 6 or 7 years, but I believe they also changed the format of the trigger buttons on the Controller "S".

I absolutely have come to love the PS3's controller (with the trigger add-ons), it's excellent and I like it better than the 360's mainly because of the **** thumb pad. While everyone will have their own favorite, PS3 gets my vote for most useful and well designed controller.

No. Its because change costs money, and keeping the same controller for three generations (despite being an unergonomic mess with horrible analogue stick placement and terrible triggers) is cheaper than making a newer, better one.

Agreed. The Dual shock is just a poor Controller, and it's been kept the same because it's cheaper.

Sixaxis is ALSO a useless gimmick that was thrown in there for the sake of having a useless gimmick. almost no games whatsoever that came out later than 2007 use the damn thing, and the ones that did use it, it was terribly integrated, and only there for the sake of putting it there. Not to mention, they were usually crappy 2007 games. Friggin Uncharted 1 balancing across a beam, or throwing grenades with it, yea, how fun is that . The only game i can think of that used it that came out later than 2007 was MGS4. Most people literally forget that the feature is there until they are required to use it.

Both the DC and DS the DC controller did not had 2 analogues, also did not had 8 buttons, and certainly did not have rumble build in. Those are features of the DS controller, also do you have a link of MS saying that MS bough the rights to the DC controller.? MS try to not copy the DS placement to much while making a copy at the same time, reason why the black and white buttons are 2 of the worst buttons ever use on a controller, hard to press to small, but with the xbox 360 controller, they actually went at it,the xbox 360 controller feature 4 should buttons,2 trigger and to normal ones, the only controller on the console market with that kind of layout was the DS.

DualShock is near perfect for me. There are only two problems. L2 and R2, which look really cool but don't feel as good and the controller's durability. My left analog stick sometimes gets stuck forward. A lot of times it is stuck forward just a little bit. I can't see it but if the sensitivity is low like Killzone 3, I notice it. Other than that, it is great. Good for fighting games, FPS, racing games and everything in between. It is small but that doesn't bother me. *waits for xbot to accuse me of having girl hands*

I hate how close the analogs are. I also dont like how loose and cheap the analogs feel. I am also not a fan of how the analog thumb "pads" are concave outwards and uncomfortable (sort of like nintendo's). I dont like how shallow and cheap the buttons feel. I also dont like how shallow the control pad is (though i still like the control pad more than the 360's or wii's). I also dont like the shoulder buttons and how shallow the back two are.

THe sixaxis/ dualshock whatever version it is for the ps3 also made it even worse. THe triggers are absolutely horrid. The controller also feels light as hell (though this is fixed for the rumble version)

I dont mind using the dualshock for any game that uses only dpad + buttons. THose are fine and for those type of games, i actually like the dualshock a little bit.

But for any other type of game, i would rather use the wiimote+ nunchuck, 360 controller or gamecube.

The analogs are too close to each other and it's just small. LustForSoul
They are right they are not to close,if anything the xbox 360 ones are to far,and the controller is to big still, see some one cam make that same argument you did, which is meaning less because controllers are something no every one will agree on.

[QUOTE="DarkLink77"] Any if anything, Microsoft copied the Dreamcast controller design, considering they bought the rights to it. Well, that and the original Xbox controller looks just like a DC controller.tormentos

Look at the analogue placement, the button placement, the trigger layout, the D-pad, the two slots for memory cards, etc, etc. it's an updated DC controller. They only thing they did that was like the DS was move the black and white buttons to the shoulders. I can't find the article atm, but there is one.

"Playstation controllers are the best, that's why they never needed a change." Yeah, that's the reason.
