The fact is they now have 30% of a formerly intrenched handheld market. The PS2 is still selling and has 160 titles coming out for it this upcoming year. They are retaining the markets they are already in. If they are loosing in console sales they are winning in Blu Ray sells. Yes their gaming market is suffering from a lack of games but they don't have only one market to attend to like Microsoft.
Whatever they are loosing at the moment is going to be offset in a few years when they have a firm foothold in two gaming markets. If the PS2 is still selling when SD-TV cuts out in December of 09 to whom are the sony faithful going to run too? Especially when the prices have dramatically gone down. If they win the format war thats all the more reason not to buy an Xbox. Who cares how much they lost to win the war. If they win they will have the format for at least 10 to 15 years.
You have to look at the long term and Sony's number one interest isn't whether or not your satisfied by the PS3 library of games. I stand in firm belief that I'm correct in saying "buying a system the year it is launched is a waste of time and money."

If Blue Ray actually replaces DVD, Sony will be rolling in the money. It needs to win the format war first, and then it needs to convince people that the marginal picture quality increase that Blue Ray offers is worth upgrading and replacing their current DVD collections. That I think is easyer said then done.
PSP is doing just fine for Sony. They have sold more PSP's than M$ has sold Xbox 360s. But PS2 sales are dropping. I don't remotly buy into the 10 year life span thing. Will most people still be playing thier PS2 two years from now? No. Even now, if all you have is a PS2 you are missing out. PC's are already giving us glimpses of games that go beyond the 360 and PS3. In about 3-4 years we will be ready for the PS4.
