After a mere 6 months, Sony has created a very real online presence.

Straight from Gamer's Day, we've got the numbers of Sony's online world. First off, over 1.5 million users have created online accounts, with 775,000 coming from North America (we don't know if these are individual PS3s, as some people have multiple accounts for differing regions).

At this 6 month mark, Microsoft had only 500,000 users on Xbox Live. For those of you who think that's not a fair comparison, the 500,000 number also includes the free silver edition.

Six million pieces of content have been downloaded from the PlayStation Store. They didn't announce the ratio of free to paid content, but it's an impressive number nonetheless.

Finally, the 1.5 million users have logged in a total of 115 million times. So using our impressive math and reasoning skills, that's an average of 77 log-ins per PS3 owner. Not bad at all Sony.

Well the PlayStation Network has a bright future ahead of itself with Home on the horizon, but these numbers tell us it isn't doing so bad right now either.

Source

Impressive. That's about half the userbase.

That's fantastic, and it's great to see how amazing PSN looks to become in the future with the release of Home and many download only games such as Warhawk and Socom: Confrontation.

I gotta admit, that number is a big surprise.

Good post, that's pretty good for what's out right now as far as games go. Just wait until the big online games come into play, especially Socom and Warhawk.

"We don't know if these are individual PS3s, as some people have multiple accounts for differing regions"

Only some people may have more then 1 account? I doubt that.

Plus it's from a PS3 site.

You know with live. MS can track people more easy with there system ID numbers.

If Sony would give solid numbers instead of guesses. I would believe it.

For a system with only 3 million consoles sold, that is very impressive, not to mention u laugh at it but looking at the same period of time the xbox 360 was launched it shatters MS in the first 6 months and to make it worse MS is the powerhouse of the 3 consoles for online gaming, so if anything, id say that is quite impressive for sony which online was never really there strong point. U can only imagine just how big it will get once the ps3 really start selling, Id be kind of worried if I were MS, because so far the ps3 has covered alot of ground in the area MS is the strongest and it will continue to grow. Besides this info, thanx TC for the info, always good to hear especially when so many try an say the ps3 is dead, lol. The PS3 is just warming up and ready to unleash its tru self once the games come. :)

The comparison in the article factors in XBL Silver numbers, and Silver is free.

the ps3 is competing with the 360 NOW

why do people pull excuses like "well the ps3 sold blah blah blah in the same 6 month time frame as blah blah so the ps3 is winning"

all I see is blind hope and assumptions that are only going to fall flat

you act as if Microsoft is just going to wait for sony to catch up

I'm not surprised. The PS3 is a multimedia machine and more people have broadband now. Apart from silver users, all XBL users are playing multiplayer games over thiers, not just downloading from a store (which I've heard makes it far less than free).

May I remind u lemmings, that if the xbox 360 has so many great titles as u claim it has then why isnt the xbox 360 flying off shelves? I'll tell u one thing for sure, if the ps3 or nintendo was in the position the xbox 360 is in right now with all the games it has, I guarantee u it would be selling like crazy, not sitting there. Just wait and see, Book Mark me, this holiday season sony is gonna sell the most units out of the 3, especially with the powerhouse lineup they have coming towards the end of the year, and look for 2008 for the ps3 to start its march of dominating with its software.

If after 4 years Microsoft had only 500k users. Then that's a very impressive number for Sony to achieve in such a short period.

I am an 360 fan but I am not a lemming I play my PC maybe more than my 360...the 360 has by far the best titles right now IMO and as for this holiday the 360's lineup is the best out of the 3 consoles again IMO...why is the 360 not selling like the Wii thats easy the Wii is less expensive and brings something new to the table...most avg joe's will not pay more than $200 for a console let alone $400-$600

"Xbox Live hit a milestone in July 2004, when it achieved 1 million subscribers; and again in March 2007, when it achieved 6 million subscribers."

Xbox live launched in 2002... So that is about 5 years at a total of 1.2 million subscribers per year (average).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_live

Wonder how many PS3 accounts are inactive? How many are for 1 system? We will never know.

This shouldnt even be argued, there are probably tons of ps3 users with multiple accounts. How can these numbers be taken seriously when theres no way of knowing if there is 1 account per console Like the 360?

At this 6 month mark, Microsoft had only 500,000 users on Xbox Live. For those of you who think that's not a fair comparison, the 500,000 number also includes the free silver edition.

[QUOTE="Mystery_Writer"]If after 4 years Microsoft had only 500k users. Then that's a very impressive number for Sony to achieve in such a short period.Truth_Hurts_U

Xbox Live hit a milestone in July 2004, when it achieved 1 million subscribers; and again in March 2007, when it achieved 6 million subscribers.

Xbox live launched in 2002... So that is about 5 years at a total of 1.2 million subscribers per year (adverage).

Wonder how many PS3 accounts are inactive? How many are for 1 system. We will never know.

then its an unfair comparison because you can't play games online with a silver membership

good point. But then it raises the question of whether MS needs to stop charging for XBL to remain competitive with PSN, especially when Home releases.

for me personally I am perfectly content with XBL the way it is currently constituted I have had it since Nov. 14th 2002 and have never regretted it...would it be nice if it was free sure but not if it means a drop off in the quality of the service...but I am sure alot more people would try it if it was free, a dude I worked with bought a 360 and he doesn't even have broadband, I would try to tell him he was missing out but to no avail
