The latest update to the PlayStation 4 operating system has a feature that some users have craved for years. From today, the console will now properly sync with iOS devices, giving iPhone and iPad users the ability to game with the PS4 Remote Play app. Given that Sony first launched remote play (for its Xperia Z3) in October 2014, it's certainly been a long time coming.

Much like its forbears, setup is as simple as updating your PS4, downloading the app and pairing the two. The on-screen controls are overlaid onto the image, and like many mobile games, will probably play better with a third-party controller. Sadly, you can't connect a DualShock 4 to an iPhone unless you've jailbroken it, so third-party options are probably the way to go.

Of course, if you've really wanted to play PS4 on your iPhone, you've been able to, just not without Sony's express blessing. Third party apps, like R-Play, have enabled this since 2017, although unlike Sony's offering, you had to pay $12 for the privilege. If that seems too steep, you can now grab the PS4 Remote Play app for iOS in the App Store.

Update: Adding more details since the controller options are becoming problematic for people.

There are currently 3 control options.

1) Native onscreen controller support. DS4 pairing to iOS is not supported and likely never will be by Apple.

2) MFI certified controllers are confirmed working. Current best option seems to be the Rotor Riot as it supports L3/R3 here

3) Work around DS4 support. Only works with DS4 distance to PS4. Log into DS4 as a second user and connect via Remote Play as a different user.

Now I've already personally speculated that Sony's answer to xCloud isn't to push remote play on PSNow servers. Rather its to utilize PS5 back-compatibility PS1-PS4 to allow PSNow to download all games which are all remote play enabled.

Essentially your own console becomes the remote server and allows you to play all your existing games on various devices for no cost.

Yep, but I will say it has a long way to go to beat R-Play. R-Play allows your to resize and move the button overlay. I'm sure that will come eventually. Both apps support 1080P and 60fps if you have a PSPro and it works very well. *Tips* play use high frame rate if possible as it helps mitigate lag. Remote Play is best for turn based gameplay on the go so I usually use it for JRPGs.

I really hoping this happens, I have no OG PSX or PS2 games or consoles, so I'd really like that.

It works now.

If you have the couple of digital PS1/PS2 games on PS4 you can remote play them. I have PSNow and download the PS2 classics and use it through remote play. Dark Cloud and Rogue Galaxy are amazing via remote play.

I wanted to try but fucking lame ass Apple been striping my iPad of all new features for over a year now and won't allow me to install the app on my iPad, what kind of cunts put shit on my library that I can't install, fucking twats.

I'll never buy another apple product in my life. It was either keep spending money to keep upgrading, cause I originally started with iPad 2, or just quit it, which is what I did, and now my iPad is absoutely worthless. Not just cause of the apps, but it can't maintain wifi or bluetooth, so I can't even use it for basic TV viewing.

Thank god I have a 2 in 1 Laptop that compeltely replaced that piece of crap iPad. Sony are fucking idiots to be backing iOS, then again that is who Nintendo backed first with their Mario Run and shit. Except, no one even likes Apple anymore, so I guess Apple has to pay for exclusivity to make their products seem worth a damn, but their not.

Sad that my Vita is more capable than my iPad, Apple really fell off a cliff since poor Steve Jobs died. I want to feel bad, but **** them and their overpriced trash. And I think my rants over now.

Wow, quite a no. of development effort has been wasted on redundant app. I mean Youtube already works on iOS out of the box, you know the only app you need to enjoy majority of Sony's library.

2014 called, and they want their old jokes back.

On topic: I tried the remote play on my iPad and iPhone and it works perfectly. Now what we need is native Dualshock 4 support so I don't need to use the touch screen for gaming which sucks. I hear DS4 is supported in jail broken iPhones already. I've also heard that it's possible to use third party controllers on your iPhone that work with remote play but I don't want that. I wanna use my DS4s on my iPhone and iPad.

You would love to go back to 2014-2015 though, won't you Quad? Such a shame that in 2019 you are already on your second alt. Anyway, what joke? It was Sony that marketed UC2 as a movie in 2009 not in 2014.

Of course, it's sad instead of funny when a game publisher hypes the passive nature of its games in an active entertainment medium. Anyway that's already much more attention than what I usually gives to an alt. Bye and enjoy while you last.

Yeah, none of this is remotely relevant.

In my original post there are some control options.

In order to use a DS4 you would need to use the 2nd account workaround.

Create a second account and Remote Play into that account.

Then take a second controller to log into your normal account. Your remote play connection should still be active.

This only works in close proximity to your PS4. So whatever the controller range is.

I also ordered one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/Nyko-Smart-Clip-PlayStation-DUALSHOCK-Controller/dp/B00FLLFGO8

The added bonus for these is that you can plug directly into the dualshock for sound and chat. Negative is getting it started each time. That's why I'm opting for the MFI.

Thanks for the recommendations I'll try the 2nd account workaround before I get the Nyko Smart Clip.
