Yes we all know that Sony's Playstation 2 sold over 100 million units. But what people don't see is that the playstation 2 isn't what it was hyped up to be in terms of console sales. You wanna know why. Its because almost every person who purchased a Playstation 2 bought two or more units. Everybody that I know who had a playstation 2 bought two or more units. I even know someone who went through 4 of them. Granted not every body bought more then one but mostly everybody and here is why. The Playstation 2 just doesn't last long. Disk read errors was one of many things that happened with the Playstation 2. Believe me 100 million people don't have the Playstation 2. Maybe 50-60 million but not over 100 million.

Does it really matter? It was a great system. Sales mean nothing if you own all of the consoles on the market. I own an Xbox, Gamecube, Dreamcast, and PS2. I went through 3 PS2s, but the number of consoles sold never once effected how much fun I was having on a given system. Last generation is over. Get over it. All four systems were great, and denying that fact makes you a moron.

U really think 20 million people had their ps2 die and had to buy a new one?  Really?  1/3 of ps2s worldwide didn't die according to your made up statistics..

Mine lasted since launch, mind you the thing is terribly sick and some of the blades of the cooling fan broke when i dropped it once, plus theres not many disks it like to read any more, but yeah quite alot of people would've gone through at least two...but the problem in this topic is that it'll quickly turn to people pointing out console failure rate in the xbox 360.

this just goes to show how much people loved the system enough to actually risk defect again and buy another one

I've had the same PS2 since October 2000.  Had to have it cleaned out once after about 4 years.  But it still works perfectly.

only about 20 million people own a PS2, because each and every one of them purchased 5 each due to failed lasers.

Well, my PS2 hasn't been replaced, people in my family haven't replaced their PS2s nor have my friends that have one. I'll be honest after 4 years my PS2 is having trouble reading some games but I'm being honest what about you?

Sony actually got sued over the disk read error thing early on I believe. Since then, they had to fix the problem and replace any old PS2's that broke due to the issue for free. At least, thats what I heard. My PS2 hasn't skipped a beat yet.

The difference is the 360's are under warranty, and did not have to be rebought. Unless you were lucky, you had to purchase a new ps2. I am on my 3rd on right now. All three of them counted as sales.

I've had mine for over a year and it's worked perfectly.  My sister has had hers since 2002 and it works perfectly as well.

If you doubt the 115m sold, go to any store.  You might notice that HALF of the shelf space is devoted to PS games and accessories.  Apparently, those games are selling quite a bit...as if there were atleast 90m people buying them.

Some people had broken PS2s, or bought multiple systems... there are 2 PS2s in my apartment.  Those people make up a small percentage.  There are probably at least 90-100 million users out there.

actually the ps2 sold over 110 million units and is still selling. even if the early hardware was unreliable it was still the most popular, the most successful, the most supported, and held +50% of the total gaming market share. it was the platform king for its generation and saw success that was never achieved by a single game console before. this is all history, its not ever gonna change. as for the argument of buying rebuying consoles to attributing to the final total id say that at most there would be 10 million that were rebought, leaving the ps2 still over a 100 million.

Mine is still alive after seven years.  And btw then I guess same could be said about 360 not having 10+ million owners because I also have friends who are on their second 360 so I could just do what you've done now...generalize it and not only that, but also exagerating

i think the number is 100million sold right? and you're saying only 20 million people have them.....thats plain stupidity. an 80% percent fail rate is unheard of. I say maybe 90 million in home because a 10% failure rate seems right, just like the 360.

That is not even close to true. The DRE problem was definately big but nowhere near %50. At the very most %20 of launch units and decreasing to near zero at current. There are at least 100million alive right now considering it's sold close to 120mil at this point.

Xbox 360 actually does have around a %50 failure rate for launch units within 1 year and we have no clue whether the new ones won't slowly fry themselves too since there hasn't been a major redesign. I doubt a single launch 360 will still exist by the time the generation is up. So do 8 million people really have 360s and are they all going to have to buy a new one?

As long as you don't run it through a car wash, your console should be fine.  I have NEVER had a console go out on me, and I've been gaming since the NES days.

No, nor did 70+ million people get the NES, 52 million get the SNES, 46 or however many million get the Genesis/Megadrive, 8 million get the Gamegear, ect.

All electronics products have a certain rate of defect and it was actually very high with the NES as one example (CDX for another). So these threads are utterly irrelevant, PS1 and PS2 both killed their competition no matter how you try to spin the numbers, get the **** over it already.

Well if what he says is true the attach rate is freaking crazy and I'm actually on the far lower end with around 20-30 PS2 games.

Yes, the PS2 was a very flimsy piece of hardware. But about halfway through it's life cycle, they fixed most of the disc error problems. 100 million sold never equals 100 million owners. All products have a percentage of failure. It doesn't take away the fact that the PS2 had a ton of great games, great support from 3rd party, and generally dominated the generation.
