Getting Started With The PlayStation TV

The basic PlayStation TV package, retailing for $99, comes with the unit itself, a power cable and an HDMI cable. Choosing this package requires you already have access to a Dualshock 3 or Dualshock 4 controller, either of which can be used to control the system. You'll also want a memory card as well, as the PlayStation TV only comes with a single gig of internal storage.

Sony also offers a $139.99 bundle, which includes the PlayStation TV, a Dualshock 3 controller, an 8GB memory card and a voucher to download The LEGO Movie Video Game.

Hardware setup is relatively easy. Plug in the AC adapter, run an HDMI cable between the unit and your television, and be sure to have a USB cable handy to sync your controller of choice.

The interface should be familiar to anyone who has played around with a PlayStation Vita, because really that's what the PlayStation TV is — a Vita without the screen, camera or microphone.

Seems like a pretty good package for the price. Will you be getting this, SW?

Super LOL at the DS3 controller when you choose door number 2. Just let that controller die already.

I was going to get it, but then I realized I would barely use it. Perhaps when it goes on sale or when the price drops. The idea of playing Vita games on a TV with an actual controller is appealing to me though.

That looks worth the buy actually. So it plays PS1, PSP and Vita games? In the native resolution though? So 240p and 544p? Yuck. But I might get that for a cheap price.

Not all of them. It doesn't even support all physical Vita games, there is a list out there somewhere.

It also does remote play with PS4 and is PS Now compatible.

Not sure why Sony bothered releasing it here. Vita has been dead a long time.

On topic.

'The One has TV pass through. Who the hell needs that shit.'

Sony Launches a TV set top box. 'Harrah Sony is teh awesome sauce.'

Sony Fan continue to be the clowns of SW.

It's not a TV set top box thou. It's more akin to an Ouya, but with games.

At least get the facts straight before you get butthurt.

How does someone not wanting something and maybe picking it up when it's a lower price equal justification for companies to nickel and dime people?

Interesting. Would be even better if Sony gave it full support.

Question for Vita owners. How do games play in terms of what the technology allows for (ai, physics)? Would you describe it as somewhere between a PS2 and PS3 in terms of gameplay or is it a unique handheld thing?

I might be interested. Graphics seem good enough to hook up to a TV and it's not that expensive. Just want to know if the gameplay isn't dumbed down or at a basic level.

EDIT: "Plays Vita, PSP and PS1 games", I'm really quite interest now.

@HalcyonScarlet: Whoops, just saw 'em. Alright, here goes:

  1. Honestly, theoretically, the Vita would fall somewhere between PS2 and PS3 in terms of tech (think right in the middle, tending towards the PS2 side); the trouble is, there haven't actually been very many ambitious games on the system in a very long time (Sony has relegated it to an indie port machine) so we don't actually know.
  2. That said, the graphics are amazing- they're easily better than a Wii, for example, and if you could stand that image on your TV, a Vita's is perfect.

I do want to point out that the Vita ecosystem is not what you would expect: don't go into it expecting western games. Don't go into it expecting AAA efforts. If you go into it expecting some cool Japanese support and indie games, you will be very happy with it.

Also, you get to play Persona 4 Golden this way.

Thanks for your help. In terms of tech I'm not to worried about the graphics. But looking at the specs of the CPU (Quad core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore) I also think I have nothing to worry about with the gameplay either. Ai and Physics potential probably outperforms the Wiis.

Also it's cool about the games, don't need Western games, have those in abundance on the PC and Xbox. Also It might be good for Fifa or Pro Evo too because I find the X360, PS3, PS4, X1 varients too sim orientated to be fun. I had an absolute blast playing Pro Evo 2013 on the Wii.

It gives you limited access to Vita titles, and I have no desire to stream old games with Sony's dick in my ass.

@SolidGame_basic: What's the difference between this and PSNow? Can I play ALL my DD games from my PSVita, PS3 and PS4 through the PSTV? How would I play my already owned PSVita games through the PSTV? Is there a slot to accept PSVita games? I can play my PS4 games through PSTV using WiFi. If you already have a dedicated HDTV for your PS4, why would you need to. It says there are 700 PS3 games it supports. Ok, do you have to rebuy these games to play them on PSTV? Seriously, the only good thing I see about this device is you can play PSVita games on your TV. Everything doesn't really seem like a valuable purpose to get it.

PS Now is a rental service that streams PS3 games to any Sony platform (Vita, PS TV, PS3, PS4, even some Bravia TVs, and probably the new Sony phones). I'm assuming Sony will eventually have all Playstation (ps1 - ps4) games available for rent at some point. But for now, just PS3.

PS TV - Covers only selectPS1, PSP, and Vita games. So no, not all. For instance, Vita games that rely heavily on touch controls like Gravity Rush are not included. Here is the list of PS TV compatible games https://support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5376/~/games-compatible-with-playstation-tv If you already own it then you can just download it to your PS TV.

You can use the PS TV to play PS4 games via remote play (like you do with Vita). You can use your dualshock 3 or dualshock 4 on PS TV. Perhaps at some point they will enable you to use dualshock 4 touchpad to play Vita games that use touch controls extensively.
