well 5 million copies in japan and 1 million in 5 days in the US means its pretty popular. so at te moment it could be more popular than GTA

umm no. the GTA series being popular this generation of gaming doesnt take away from the fact that mario and pokemon are just as popular. and saying that GTA is more well known then the mario series is ridiculous when the GTA series really started to take off on the ps2 and mario has been around for nearly 20 years and still growing strong.

What are you talking about?  Mario and Pokemon are popular right now.  NSMB has already sold nearly 10 million copies globally and is still selling.  Pokemon will probably be the biggest game in North America this year.

Popular is usually the most well known and most craved/listened to/played/wanted/agreed/etc. Anything can be "Well known". The Beatles were very well known because they were very popular in their time. That doesn't mean they are the most popular right now.

Dude everyone knows Mario its the gaming icon, and everyone knows pokemon EVERYONE. GTA is only popular to gamers, Mario is popular to non gamers and pokemon is popular to everyone due to the anime and stuff like that, I have yet to meet a person that doesn't know about Mario or Pokemon
