Can I add to your list?
Twisted Metal 2, Final Fantasy VII + VIII, Vagrant Story, Legend of Dragoon, Jade Cacoon, Parasite Eve, Brave Fencer Masashi, Critical Depth, Crash bandicoot 2, Spyro, Street Fighter Alpha 2 + 3, and many, many more. Who else wants to help with the list?
i say fourth generation. One, because the cartridge format had been vastly improved, so actually playing a game wasnt as tedious as the third generation was. Two, the games cannot be touched. Classics on both systems were too innumerable.
The fifth genertaion was the debut of the CD format, and the loading times on the PS1 were horrific, for me at least. Sixth gen those things were ironed out a bit, but the games didnt compare.
So yeah, theres my reasoning.

Super Mario 64 + Ocarina of Time + Majora's Mask + Paper Mario + Banjo Kazooie/Tooie + Legend of Legaia (really underrated PS1 RPG) + Jumping Flash (was actually the first 3D platformer) + Resident Evil/2/Nemesis + Ape Escape + Spyro 2 and 3 + many more
My vote goes to N64/PS1 gen, easily. The dawn of 3D was glorious.

I'm sorry but this may sound fanboyish. Look what Nintendo, Sony, and Sega brought to console? We can go on and on about the great games for the 5th genration. Yet, people who say Xbox was a great system baffles me. You can actually count the number of great hits on the Xbox on one hand. I don't even think PS2 comes close to the great games PS1 had. It's like people expectation is going downhill. I just see the same path for 360. Microsoft is so garbage to me when it comes to console gaming. My standards for a great console is the 5th generation, not Xbox and Xbox360. Microsoft needs to show some innovation in this console market. They're so garbage. Tuesdays and Thursdays full truck load garbage. /rant
Fifth gen. N64+PS1 .nothing comes close IMO. Nex_OwnageDitto. It was the fifth gen that first got me into gaming when I was little. SM64 was the first game to really grab me.
MS is indeed the weakest first party developer compared to Nintendo, SEGA and even Sony. However, they can get very good third party support, and that's what counts for me.I'm sorry but this may sound fanboyish. Look what Nintendo, Sony, and Sega brought to console? In the same way I was never a fan of Nintendo games, but the third party support on the NES and SNES was remarkable.

I just feel like Microsoft is not doing it's part as a gaming company. Throwing money at third party developers is such an American tactic. Their stratergy is what urks me the most about them. The true blind people are the ones who don't see the distant furture of gaming if Microsoft gets its way. Mark my word if MS take over the gaming industry it will go stale. Its all ready showing.

i think they have picked it up a little, they have brought Halo, Gears and Fable(could be a good series, the first was AA) to console gamers. They got rare and are trying to rebuild that companies name, with games like Banjo 3, plus Rare also had a new ip in viva pinata. MS helped out with mistwalker, who are making Blue Dragon, then you can throw in games like Lost Oddyssey, Too Human which look good. Plus Forza 2, PGR4, and a really good 3rd party support on a system that didnt stiff consumers that just have a standard TV. Is MS to gaming what Nintendo, Sega, or even Sony is. NO. Are they getting better and worth mentioning. Yes.Okay well i case you don't know the PS3/360/Wii Gen is the 7th and so on and so on any way gaming really started getting good when the NES game out in the 3rd generation so vote for the best. any way i say the fifth was awsome then the second best was the sixth genStarFoxCOM
I totally agree , 5th first then 6th
