Instead of Stalker we all know and love, PC could get a Halo-style game (just a bit more gritty). Check this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xb95g50JYI

Lush enviroments, big levels (the gameplay was not open-world like Stalker, but linear with big levels, like Halo). Higlighting the enemies reminded me of ODST. Also judging from released screenshots and concepts, there were other planets available. I would like if such game was released back then in 2002 as an alternative to Halo for PCs, but, well, Stalker we got is better anyway

It would take away from all the stuff that we loved about STALKER.

Yes, but it could be released alongside our familliar Stalker game. Well, now it's too late anyway, I just made this topic for the "what if" scenario :)

Watching that video...

Did anyone else feel like we need a really good PC-centric linear shooter? STALKER as it is is cool, but that still looks fantastic!

Half-Life was like that until multiplat Orange Box was released. It is really not profitable to release PC-only game nowadays.

Lol I remember this video. The stages STALKER went through was pretty crazy. At one point it featured vehicles. But, temples, and robot dinosaurs?

I'm happy for the experience the STALKER we know and love gave me :P

Wolfetan

Metro

1. Metro is multiplat

2. While it is a great game, it doesn't live up to the standards of the platform-defining game

Funny thing is the core team behind this first concept of Stalker and Metro is the same.

Nah not really like Half-Life. I'm talking like Doom or something. Half-Life's too action-adventure for my liking, and the gunplay is kinda crap. The gunplay in that STALKER game looks crazy good.

Wolfetan

Metro

It's more survival-horror than all-out FPS.

It's an absolutely fantastic game nonetheless, and without a doubt raining down during the drought of non PC-centric shooters.

They're too old though. The last one like that was Painkiller: Resurrection, and that really sucks.

Something like AvP or AvP 2's marine campaign. Chuck a bit of Unreal and Unreal 2 in there.

Oh jeez I remember playing this build ages ago.

Yes it was a leaked version, and I didn't know any better at the time and went out of my way to obtain it.

It was pretty horrible.

-

Otherwise Halo is its own game, there are games that copy it by design on multiple platforms.

I would rather a game that plays off the PC platforms strengths and individuality like STALKER or ArmA 2, or a game that doesn't compromise itself like Left 4 Dead, than another clone.

-

There are plenty of run and gun games on the PC, question is when will consoles have a STALKER **** game?

Beleive me, it really wasn't.

Actually is so strange to see all these different builds; this one was from way back when the Zone was a dumping ground for aliens, or something along those lines. Then there is the 1984 build that is readily available, and the final build.

Its so strange to see how from SoC to CoP STALKER has slowly taken steps back to how its open world design was originally planned.

edit*

Actually TC, here is something interesting.

GSC before STALKER made an FPS Codename: Outbreak.

It was a interesting shooter on a large scale, where you had a multi function gun, squad control and quite a few situations that you could approach in different ways (though it certainly was no Operation Flashpoint).

http://static2.filefront.com/images/aueocidxps.jpg

Codename Outbreak Screenshot

Image 2

I played the hell out of the demo years ago, I thought it was fairly amazing despite its lack of polish, but never got around to playing the full version.

The crazy thing is the game came out around November 2001, so you can actually point out GSC and Bungie had released similar games by your examples... at almost the exact same time.

Weird huh.

Still the differences between the two are quite large, Outbreak was much more of a 'tactical shooter to certain extents'. I also remember the a.i. being quite poor, which wasn't too bad considering the odds were against you/

I prefer the PC to get games that aren't Halo influenced. Halo works at what it does on consoles(although Ironically I bought Halo CE on PC the first time by). If anything I'd rather see something alone the lines of another FEAR, except not like FEAR 2. I would like it to not suck.

I think the original Halo on the PC was even better than the Xbox version, except it was missing co-op.

Halo 2 sucked on the PC, but not just because it was GFWL. It was because Halo started refining itself as a console shooter. The original Halo feels somewhat like a PC shooter, and it's because of that the game still has a fairly sized community on the PC.

Halo 3 also feels like it could only succeed on a console.

A lot of PC gamers say Halo CE feels slow, and it kinda does. But that's when you're coming off the peak of popularity between Quake, Counter-strike, and Unreal Tournament.

If anyone is interested: You can get a beta build officially from the GSC gameworld homepage

http://files.gsc-game.com:3128/oldbuild/

It's not the same build as the one in the video, but still worth trying.

Actually that statement would apply more to consoles how many exclusives on the 360 and ps3 that aren't first party and funded by sony or microsoft? for a platform that has no one to buy up exclusives it somehow manages to have the highest amount of AAA,AA,and A exclusives this gen clearly alot of developers do believe there is profit in releasing a pc only game more so then the consoles who's major heavy hitters have to be bought by sony and microsoft.

I played the full version of Outbreak, and remember not liking it very much. Although it really looks like Oblivion Lost in terms of art and design. Also it was made by different developers team. (Funny how GSC have had three different FPS teams under it's roof - Venom team, that left GSC and made Xenus games afterwards, Stalker SoC team that also left GSC and made Metro 2033 and Clear Sky/Call of Pripyat team that works on stalker series now).

About the pre-alpha builds available on the internet - there are many of them from the different development stages. Looks like slavs don't give a cr@p about NDA lol :)

I think it has its own community slowly piecing it back to together? I could be wrong, but on release quite a few people seemed to be fiddling with it.

Is this an offcial game by GSC or a team of fans who created Mods creating a game under that name? Oblivion Lost rings a bell in the Mod community. It dose nto deserve to call itself Stalker thats just a JOKE to be honest. Looks ok but using the Stalker name i think not.

Take that back it looks like a load of rubbish and needs canning.

Also, the video reminds me more of Tribes.

That was the official name. First the game was called just Oblivion Lost. Then Stalker: Oblivion Lost. Then and finally the name was changed to Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl. And then some douchebag stole that pre-release name for his mod. Kinda sad that ppl know OL only as a mod name.

There's no such thing as build 1984. I think you've meant build 1935 - that is the most complete build from 2004 released. Some ppl considered rebuild old Stalker using it as a basis, but it is really buggy and optimized. Instead there is a mod in development - Lost Alpha - which is rebuild of the old 2003-2004 Stalker on the retail SoC engine.

Nope, they changed their minds by 2002. At first they moved the game setting to Crimea and then, finally, to Chernobyl.

Thank god we got Stalker, even with all of its bugs. This looked like complete Halo-ish crap.
