In terms of games, it is getting some very good. So no.
In terms of sales... it is selling very few compared with the expectations, so kinda yeah.
It's a failure in Japan but it's doing very well everywhere else. It's not doing as well as Sony expected but it's doing a lot better than many of the PS-haters thought it would. Should come in 2nd place.Floppy_Jim
Do you remember that we had a cool discussion some months ago about when would the PS3 outsell the 360?
I said, minimun 2010.
You said 2009.
Just asking, do you still believe that? :)
No one expected the PS3 to be fighting/hoping for 2nd place.
No one thought it would be fighting to keep up with graphics on the 360.
No one thought it would ever be beat in sales in Japan.
No one thought it would be a complete failure.
Non one thought the stuff above would become true when Sony lied about it as E305, but a lot has happened since then and now we see the above statements as facts.

Depends- was this before before or after the FF13/360 announcement?
Despite the FF13 thing, I still think it'll happen by the end of 2009. Mainly because of the inevitable ressurection in Japan with FF13, other JRPG's, and possibly a slim-line model. And there's bound to be a WW price cut at some point next year.
I am not usually one for pure ignorance, but That was actually quite funny ^.^ Kudos.Put it this way, if the PS3 debuted at the same price as the xbox350, then they xbox350 would now be the next dreamcast.

It's too soon to declare it a total failure, but there's no doubt in anyone's mind that so far the PS3 has failed to meet all expectations. It's 3rd place worldwide, stagnent sales in Japan, its lost a lot of exclusives, and a lot of big games for it did not sell to expectation. There is no bright side to their current situation. The future could get a lot better, but at this point who really knows? Everything that people thought would happen has not happen.
The PS3 will be an interesting story when all is said and done. It helped Sony win a format war, but did they lose a hardware war in the process?
Just wondering if selling less copies then 360 in Japan for 6 weeks constitutes a failure????JediA_basic
That doesn't make it a failure overall. The PS3 will never be a failure imo. Yes, it won't be the #1 system this gen. Yes, its looking like its gonna have to fight hard as hell just to get second place and no matter who gets second, I doubt there will be a large difference in numbers between it and the 3rd place.
Its not gonna go the way of the DC, Jaguar, 3DO etc though. It still sells enough games for people to release on it. Just like how its silly for 3rd parties not come out on 360, its silly for them not to come out on PS3. You're just losing tons of extra money. Like extra guarenteed money.
That alone will keep it alive. When multiplats start to flop on the PS3, start worrying then.
I think they are only doing not amazing because they got a lil cocky. They crammed the system with like super high tech equipment on the assumption that, "we're Sony so everyone will either get down or lay down." Nobody could have anticipated the Wii and I don't think they really understood that the xbox cemented MS as a legit console maker and not some newb that gamers wouldn't be willing to invest in.

I also stay the same. Considering that after all these months the gap is still about 5 millions, and that this holiday is very likely that the 360 wins (due the price drop), and the PS3 being beat in Japan, I believe it is really difficult before 2010.
Actually I'm even starting to think that the PS3 won't be outselling the 360 until this gen.
xbox350's are now like 200 bucks, even a kid with a paper route can afford one, and I'm guessing that's the age group microsoft is targeting with their monthly price drops.
Mark my words, if the PS3 was the same price as the xbox PS3 would outsell it, it's a better system by far. People like better things, but the tips from a paper route just don't cut it.

Im going for a late-mid 2010 as I was since day 1. Mostly due to price differences, and recession which will boost both Wii and 360 sales. PS3 though has a heavy hitter this holidays in Japan, from Level 5, and the PSP has Dissidia on the 18th of Dec also which means, Sony has 2 heavy guns this X-mas in Japan. Its not the same for the other regions, though R2, M2, LBP are releasing in Nov, which can also boost sales for X-mas, but most likely Gears 2 will have a bigger impact because it appeals to a wider audience already.

I think it'll be very close this holiday. The PS3 still has LBP, the 80GB and WKC to help it in Japan. And if VGChartz are accurate, the 360 is already being outsold in Europe again by the PS3 just a couple of weeks after the price cut.
I predict that in some point in '09, the PS3 will have a big WW price drop of $100 and sales will absolutely explode, perhaps even rivalling the Wii for a short while. Assuming the Wii doesn't get a price drop of it's own.

Well, it is not impossible that that happens again, but I'm not exactly sure if Sony will be able to make another price cut. If what we hear is to be believed, they are bleeding money.
And of course, it will also depends on what MS does next year (because righ now we are not exactly well-informed).

Aside from more price cuts and bundles, I'm not really sure what else MS can do if they're serious about beating Sony. They already have GTA 4 and FF13, the only big 3rd party PS3 exclusive left is MGS 4. And that's already done it's job for Sony, even if it did go to 360 it wouldn't hurt them at all.
I think Sony aim to start making profit on the PS3 in March of next year so I think they could manage a price cut around Q3-4 2009. Having the price cut at the exact same time of FF13's release in Japan would be a brilliant move.
Then again I'm just some guy on an internet forum, who am I to tell Sony what to do? :)

But at the same time they are making a killing of PSPs and PS2s. As well as having most of their 1st party games over a million units each which also gives them a boost in profits. Yes, there is no denying that PS3 bleeds like a pig before a meal. But the PS2 was also a bleeder (though it was accompanied with huge sales) as it was in the red for almost 3.5-4 years before going to the green. There are a lot of people that still havent moved generations, which is why PS2s sales are big. But currently, if they move, they will go to either 360 or Wii. So Sony must cut their prices again if they want to cut the space again.
All this fight is exiting to me, mostly because I study economics for my degree. I really dont care if the PS3 goes last, as long as it still gets games even if they are multiplats I cant be any happier XD
it's a little early to say that one console has succeeded/failed. Especially considering that all three console makers have said this will be the longest lasting gen yet. For PS3 and Wii we're just going on our second year. The way the dynamics of the game market is changing, I'd say it will be awhile before a sales victor is crowned. I will say that the Wii is looking like the sure runaway.
In terms of games the PS3 is definitely not a failure. Two of my favorite current gen games I've played on the PS3, MLB: The Show 08, and MGS4.
Depends on what your definition of 'failure' is.
From a financial, company standpoint, it's been a dismal failure. It hasn't recieved a fraction of the amount of love the PS2 did, and Sony has yet to make a cent off of it.
From a gamer standpoint, it's doing quite well with its selection of titles.
Just wondering if selling less copies then 360 in Japan for 6 weeks constitutes a failure???? Please Sony fanboys if it's still too early let me know and I'll back-off until at least until it's selling less than Dreamcast...JediA_basicYes 360 has outsold it for 6 weeks but are we forgetting about the rest of the weeks before those 6? How the heck is that a failure

Beating the 360 in Japan is like beating an amputee in a race. It's a failure compared to the performance of the PS2 during the same time in it's lifespan. Ultimately, that what you have to compare it to. It's certainly what Sony was expecting at any rate.

Should come in 2nd place.Floppy_JimI think this is prertty spot on, although I think it may yet recover in Japan. In terms of the rest of the world and second place, this holiday season, with worldwide economic woes and a very cheap 360 will go a LONG way to seeing whether or not the 360 can put up a significant lead or whether it will be swallowed up by thePS3 for second.
things are like not looking good for the ps3 right now...there are many bad news about it lately...
whats the point in selling more consoles..but losing exclusives at the same time, and multiplatform games dont looking as good as the other versiones at this point of the race ?? (fallout 3 for example, bioshock had to be patched to look like the other versions)
yeah it still has some good games comming these months... but some of the other heavy hitters like FFVXIII and GOW3 are comming in late 09, early 2010 or who knows... GT5 complete game is not comming soon neither....
im starting to have my doubts about it...seriously...i dont know all of you, amybe some of you will agree, maybe some will not, but i think its kind of true all this.
farawell !
Well let's see... the PS3 is supposed to be the number one console on the market in every regard Yet in popularity it has been destroyed by the Wii, and a niche core-gamer oriented system (the 360 ) has somehow become its sales competitor. The PS3 has lost its hold on the games that defined "Playstation", with big titles like GTA and FF XIII going multiplat.
It has been beaten in price by both the Wii and 360, the online upgrade being touted for a year and a half *still* hasn't come out of beta. Many of the games that were supposed to "showcase the system" have been merely average, and the word from publishers for PS3 fans has been "don't hold your breath". The software sales advantage of the 360 / PC combined have the 360 to be the "lead" system for many games, resulting in the PS3 receiving inferior versions.
-
Sony has posted that its profits have been down, the PS3 cost the company a fortune in R&D, yet has done little for their gaming department. The best model of the PS3 (the 60gb with full hardware backwards-compatibility ) was pulled from the market - in most of the world BC, one of the PS3's best features, is unavailable.
-
-
Yet the PS3 isn't a bad system - I would never claim that - it has some great games, and it has access to all of the generation's big multiplats. The hardware is reliable, and the addition of blu-ray is a nice bonus for movie fans who are scared to go digital. At the same time, however, from the honest perspective - from the "is the PS3 a successful product?" angle?
Really? It's a disaster. Were I a Sony shareholder, I would have the people responsible for this disaster strung up in Tokyo square. There would be no trial for what they did. They took the most successful gaming brand in history, and tied it to a $600 monstrosity. They played a stupid internal game where they attempted to boost the movie and music parts of Sony by bogging it down with expensive technology, which ultimately meant sacrificing one of the most profitable areas of Sony to bolster two ~ three struggling areas.
What the hell were they thinking?
-
As far as general consumption goes - enjoy it - the PS3 is certainly an effective piece of hardware, with some great games, but as far as "Sony" and "success" are concerned - you can't go from PS2 level success to being the struggling PS3 without some serious screw ups. You have to be a pretty serious Playstation Fanboy, or simply blind to the market reality, to think the Playstation 3 has been anything other than a nightmare for Sony.
In fact, there is only one right answer in your poll, 'it was a failure since its inception". That is 100% correct, anyone voting otherwise ought to spend a few years in an MBA program (or just think about it for a bit ). Look over all the generations of consoles, not just the ones you have heard of, but also the ones that didn't sell, the ones that failed, the ones that became tied to too expensive of a technology, or too many features that didn't matter.
Now tell me - would you, as a product line manager, ever think "our showcase product should launch at $600, a year later than, and at least $200 more than, our nearest competitor"? Does it sound smart to be more expensive than a system with more games, or a system (Wii ) with more new gamer and casual appeal?
If Sony had launched the PS3 at $400 and matched the 360 price-cut for price-cut, the PS3 would be the number two system on the market by a significant margin. If they had used traditional hardware instead of "the cell", made blu-ray an optional feature for their "high end" model (not used for games), and focused on a standard 60gb hard drive size (which would, at the time, have been a threat to the 360, which does not have a hard drive standard) they could have pushed that lead further.
It's all about costs, and Sony essentially threw the PS3's "reasonable price" under the train to push Blu-Ray and try out this "cell" processor. They ultimately traded millions of PS3 sales for a minor victory in other areas.
[QUOTE="dr_jashugan"]If the Xbox360 hadn't been plagued by the RRoD Curse, it would have DOMINATED the console war of this gen. 8)PAL360
360 will end in second this gen for sure
but i agree....IMO PS3 still exists because of RRoD
Really? Why are there still people purchasing 360's now, even with the highly publicized RROD problem? It seems to me that people don't care much about a quality hardware, especially when MS will replace your brand new console with a refurbished one when it gets RROD.
People may be price sensitive, which may explain why the Wii is leading in sales this generation. This generation is far from over, but PS3 has been holding its own weight especially considering that it came out 14 months after 360, and that it is more expensive purchase. We shall see in the end.
Either way, I see this as a win win situation for the gamers:
1. Forces companies like MS to not sell crappy hardware in the future---same thing happened to Sony, PS2 had issues with the optical drive/reader, and they were sued--forcing them to delay the launch of the PS3 to ensure it was working properly------PS3=reliable hardware
2. Forces companies to become more price sensitive----Wii is the cheapest of all consoles, translates to console leader (for now, we will see)
3. Companies are forced to come up with better games and better consoles. They have to differentaite themselves by developing better 1p and 2p exclusives to win over gamers = better games for all. Add more features to their consoles, to justify paying hefty sums to own one = consoles with better features! Win-win for everyone!
So battle on, and make us gamers happy-----give us great games!!!

No, I actually believe this too. I really think if Sony had debuted PS3 at the same price as 360, 360 would be in last place right now. The initial PS3 price point is what made a lot of people who were going to buy PS3 buy 360 instead.
Look at Nintendo. NES sold 50 million. Gamecube sold around 21 million. It took 3 console generations to lose 29 million people. PS2 sold 120 million and PS3 is on the road to losing more than 90 million people. Obviously, having a really high initial price point hurt them. You don't lose that many people that quickly over less than stellar software. If that were true, then no one would have bought N64 since it only had a few select great games.
Console Sales
1.) Wii
2.) 360
3.) PS3 (those two will be close)
Average Quality of Games
1.) 360 (again with all the multiplats Microsoft wrested away from Sony, it's gonna be close with the PS3)
2.) PS3
3.) Wii
That's how it's gonna end. Unless some an of God or something happens...
Yes. PS3 is such a failure... If only it didn't have such rubbish games like Warhawk, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Motorstorm, LBP, Resistance, Heavy Rain, Killzone 2, MGS 4 and others. If only it had free online or something coming out soon that allowed people to communicate with avatars in a social environment. If only it could play a 50GB disk that allowed High-Defintion movies on disks. If only it had the most powerful processor of the three systems. If only...
