Blu-Ray is a valid reason for buying the PS3. Many people are buying it for Blu-Ray playback exclusively.
This topic is locked from further discussion.
sounds about right. not many games to plaay, that for sure.Areola54
Well, many people who bought the PS3 have no interest in games at all. They bought it because at the time, it was not only the cheapest, but also the most technologically advanced and superior Blu-Ray player available.

Nope. Lack of games are irrelevant. Many people purchased PS3 with no intention of ever using it to play games. :D
why would they do that?:P

Because PS3 is the cheapest (well, 2nd cheapest now...), most advanced and best Blu-Ray player available today. It will be cheapest again if the PS3 100 dollar price drop happens next week.

wouldnt make sense for them to drop the price next week. im guessing you are assuming that cause of e3. it would make more sense to do it during the holiday season since that is the time sales goes up and plus the "heavy hitter" games come out.
I wouldn't buy a PS3 which costs 600$(or less with the possible price drop) just to watch movies, but that's me.
guys, just get a used DVD player;)

Well, if you are going to use a DVD player, you should buy a Denon or an Oppo... which would cost you $300-400 anyways. You might as well spend a little more for Blu-Ray. :D

The funny thing is that it is the most advanced Blu-ray player, and still can't do all of the interactive features that HD DVD can, and their standalone players start at $299:lol:

It also has a hard-drive, can stream from your home network, and upscale extremely well - from a standalone media buff's point of you, that is probably going to make it worth the 600 (or maybe 500).

The PS3 recently got upgraded to BD profile 1.1, and all players made after 10/31/07 have to be. 1.1 allows BD-Java, but many first-genBD standalone players that are 1.0 cannot be ugraded to 1.1.
Also BD-Live is profile 2.0 and is not expected untilsometime in 2008. Even the PS3 is not 2.0, so no Blu-ray movies have online content and features, unlike HD DVD who do and will exclusive features for 300 that comes to both formats at the end of the month. Link
Also Oppo players that upscale better than the PS3 start between $149 (for 720p/1080i) and $229 (1080p), and the cheapest BD player is Sony's BDP-300 which has an MSRP of $499

Incorrect - the poll asks if people use it as their primary movie viewing machine. Meaning - me for example - I used to use a crappy DVD player, then I got a PS3, not I use my PS3 for all my movie watching. But I got the PS3 cause I am a gamer. Still, it is my PRIMARY movie viewing machine.

True, but they are trying to use these numbers for propaganda of Blu-ray dominance.
In North America, there are 1.5m PS3's and 100k standalone players which equals 1.6m BD players. The have sold 1.5m movies.
HD DVD has 155k standalone players and 150k 360 add-ons. 305k total HD DVD players and have sold 1.2m movies.
BD's dominance is not that great considering these numbers

Interesting. I guess the fact that it can also "double" as a game machine is a bonus....
See the problem with that poll is it does not match the actual sales numbers of BLU-RAY titles. There have only been 1.5 million BLU-RAY movies sold since BLU-RAY was launched. If there are 3.5 million PS3's on the market plus a couple of hundred thousand stand alone BLU-RAY players then that means not many PS3 owners have actually bought any BLU-RAY movies for their PS3swanlee
I was about to post something similar, Blu-ray software sales are lackluster given the amount of hardware on the market. Where as if you look at HD-DVD, there aren't as many on the market, but there is a better ratio of software being sold.

There honestly is not a site that tracks in down to that detail, but let me show you how to do it. First you get the Neilsen/VideoScan numbers every week. Luckily some puts them up everyweek at the AVSforum: link
As you can see since the formats inception that Blu-ray has sold 59 out of every 100 Hihgdefdiscs, HD DVD has 41.
We estimate that the PS3 has sold around 1.5m PS3's in NA. Even some cows say this.
Now we know that HD DVD has at least a 60% market-share in the standalone department link
150,000 divided by .6 is 250,000, so 40% of that is 100,000 which would be Blu-ray standalones
Which brings us back to 150+k standalone HD DVD players plus 150k Xbox add-ons= 300+k players. Toshiba has said that they have a 4:1 attach rate. Meaning that 4 movies for every HD DVD player. 300k times 4 is 1.2 million.
Now take 1.2 million divide it by .41 and that gives you 2.93 million then times that by .59 and that gives you 1.7 million (I admit that that means my intial numbers were a little off)
It has been rumored that BD's attach rate has been between a little less or a little more than 1:1
So, with 1.6 million Blu-ray players on the market and 1.7 million discs sold would be right on par, as well as the 1.2 million discs for HD DVD and the 300k(ish) HD DVD players, so mathematically these numbers are very close to actual figures.
Whew! That took a lot of typing.

That's not as negative as you'd want it to be.

I personally use mine 50/50 I have about 600.00 in blue ray movies, and I have about $130.00 in games. But between Motorstorm and Resistance alone eat up alot of my time in gaming on the PS3, but I also own some gems from the PSN store, that also eat alot of my time :P

Blu-Ray is a valid reason for buying the PS3. Many people are buying it for Blu-Ray playback exclusively.
Shion512
That may be so; however, that reason is also ending as standalone players are now cheaper than the PS3. Both Sony and Samsung have units $100 less than the PS3 now.
Even if the PS3 price drops next week, it is only a matter of a few months to weeks at most before a standalone player is cheaper again. Indeed, it is certain that standalone players will drop in price faster than the PS3 and that by Christmas there will be a several hundred $ advantage in buying a standalone player vs a PS3.
Meaning...that within 6 months...no one will be buying it for BluRay playback exclusively. Which does raise a valid question about Sony strategy...but that's another thread.
