Depends on the game.
Games like Counter Strike and Day of Defeat would be nothing without online (durrrr) and games like The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay do not need online to be superb. Just a couple examples.
Console online really means nothing to me. I prefer playing on the same TV with my friends than random people online. But PC is an entirely other story.

Game genres that should have multiplayer: Shooters, racers, some action games, some puzzle games, and some strategy games
Game genres that shouldn't have multiplayer: Platformers, adventure games, and RPGs that are not MMOÂ

I would say for a hardcore gamer that plays sports, fps, racing, strategy, flying, fighting games online is a must. I personally have stepped my game up due to playing others online cause the leaderboards tell all. You might think your the man but till you play online with the top ranked players then you are just the hood champ.
If you are playing puzzle, platformers, action, rpgs (not mmog) then online is not really needed imo these games are great for single player.
I choose the third option: it's marginally important, and really great for certain games.GunSmith1_basicAnd more important for PCs than consoles.
