Well, Should it? I realize that, while Sony gives us free online gaming, it's nothing compared to Microsoft's X-Box Live. A simple question, with varied opinionated answers, let's hear what you GameSpotter's have to say.

the only thing your paying for on xbl is playing online against others...and that is a rip because your already paying an internet bill to be connected to teh internetz

Apart from paying fo the game its self, i don't think we should ever have to pay to play game online.

It depends. If the reason the PSN store is so slow to bring demo's out and if the cost of servers will force developers to shut down the MP for their games (like Konami with MGS:Subsistience), than yes. But if the reason the PSN store is so slow to get new content is just pure laziness and that developers will be able to afford to keep servers running than they should keep it free.

PSN has pretty much all the features (voice chat, play online, texting...) just like Xbox Live except video chat and voice chat from different games. I don't think PSN should charge people though because they have adverstisement to pay for it unlike Xbox Live. They charge us 50 bucks ANNUALLY not a 1 time thing but ANNUALLY and they also have ads on Live too. But I don't mind if PSN charge for online play.

agree

Some people don't feel that the service is worth the money (especially with non-dedicated servers) , but they don't really have a choice in the matter because they want to play online and have to pay. As for PSN .... it is ok right now all things considered and it is really going to develop as more content and functionality gets added.

Free is good but paying for stuff brings you more content so if i were a ps3 fan i would sure as hell would want to pay for online if it gives me a better service

Paying something tiny like 50 dollars a year is not really that big of a deal. It helps to keep out a lot of the younger, more annoying players. If Halo 3 were on the PS3, and all PS3's came with a standard headset, and online were still free, it would be a 12 year old frag-fest. Nightmare scenario that.

Absolutely not. If you owned a PS3 and played online you too would appreciate the idea of FREE online play. I can hop onto a Resistance server right now worry free and find a match without lag. As it currently stands....Halo 3 is on the verge of coming out and my Gold Subscription just ran out....Having to chock up $110 just to play Halo 3 online makes me cringe.

Neither Sony nor MS should be charging for online play. It's a complete ripoff when the internet connection and servers are already paid for by the consumers.

I agree. See, of all the polls Ive ever made, this is the one that I cant seem to agree on. I like free online play. Sony does a good job of it, and it's a prety decent service. XBL is extremely good, but continuos pay is ridiculous. Then again, thats why XBL is so great right?

Halo 3 is going to be infested with 12-year olds anyway. It is already a nightmare for older gamers.

Imagine how many more young, annoying and unpleasent individuals would be infesting the service if it were free, though. People fail to realize how a few dollars a month can rid you of a lot of potential "little" problems. And Halo 3 has a mute button for those kind of people. But you'd be muting a whole heck of a lot more if the service were free. I've not run into a lot of really annoying young players in a long time. Between the fee and how XBL handles who you prefer and avoid, it is actually quite nice to play on XBL now.

It is kind of wierd that the Free online support has dedicated servers and Live uses host connections. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

I guess I would say there are more 360's out there, especially in NA (assuming you are from NA). Not only that, but the headset isn't standard on the PS3 (I do not believe, correct me if I'm wrong).

I believe the headset is the topper yeah. Standard headsets = alot of annoying people. I like the quiet silence lol.

I hear you on that front. I don't play much Gear online (versus mode). Never was a fan, especially when my sniper rifle is... off :x

PSN is fine the way it is, its a Free online service with dedicated servers which means zero lag. It has a marketplace (PSN Store) and a bunch of features I will probably never use. As long as I can play my games online without any lag i'm happy, I dont need bells and whistles and I will not pay for them.
