Poll Poll: Sony's appeal weakening? KH, MGS (73 votes)

Yes. Much less ammo by losing certain exclusivities. 22%
No. Uhm. It's cheaper and 1080p 70%
Other. 8%

SW, do you think Sony's becoming more of a loser since PS3?

Loosing a huge chunk of marketshare from MS past PS2 era and then now long certain exclusives like KH and latest MGS entries this PS4/X1 gen.

What's Sony going to lose next?

It might lose appeal, but the XBox One has pretty much nothing going for it. There is no appeal in the XBone.

I don't see this as that big of an issue. Of course it helps to have those exclusives but MGS has been seen on plenty of other consoles before, and the KH fanbase is used to purchasing a whole bunch of different systems in order to play all the games.

Because I'm such a huge fan of MGS and KH, I will always associate them with Sony products and probably will never buy them on the Xbox. So with that said, I don't think Sony is losing its appeal. It still has great exclusives despite previous exclusives from the PS2 era going multiplatform (Can you blame them? Videogames are expensive to make now a days and the profit incentive to have their game on every platform is crucial these days)

MG started with Nintendo and SE never pretended to be a exclusive 3rd party dev.

If you buy a XBO for these (or any) multiplats you may be retarded.

Dumb thread. PS4 has more steam than PS3. If anything, it's getting stronger as people are realizing how much better the first party games are compared to the competition. The cheaper price and better hardware also help. Oh, and there wasn't even a KH game last gen.

MGS was never a Sony franchise to begin with so associating this franchise with Sony indicates nostalgia which distorts your perspective in favour of the past, making you unable to properly evaluate the present.

No, those franchises haven't been playstation exclusive for a long time now, so they aren't hurting anything. KH has been on ds, psp, 3ds, etc. Metal Gear has been on Gamecube, PS3, etc. This will be the 1st time it's arrived on Xbox.

@blackace: Yep the long lines of people asking if there are any PS4s left. Those XBones are looking good on the shelves aren't they?

I guess kids who like gaming need to but consoles too.. Hence the XBoner.

They've lost a lot since the PS2 era which has made them very unappealing to me as a PC gamer.

They shifted their development towards AAA blockbusters which have been shallow, and forgettable, and they've lost a ton of Japanese exclusive support to handhelds.

I don't care about the Kingdom Hearts series no matter the platform, and I've yet to play through my copy of MGS1 (let alone the other games in the series), so I'm also "meh" about MGS5 being a multiplat.

Kinda, Insomniac games actually left Sony behind and made Sunset Overdrive an exclusive on Xbox One, when past Insomniac games had been exclusive to Playstation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insomniac_Games

Kingdom Hearts and Metal Gear Solid is now multiplatform.

But PS4/Sony still has Naughty Dog(Uncharted 4), Guerilla Games(Killzone), Team ICO(The Last Guardian being in limbo), Evolution Studios(Drive Club), Quantic Dream(Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls), Sucker Punch Productions(Infamous 2), Media Molecule, SCE Studios.

That's understandable. I was once a PC gamer back around 2002-2008. Good times. I can definitely see how most console exclusives (primarily MS & Sony), wouldn't appeal to a PC gamer these days. PC has a lot of great games that aren't on other systems.

Their appeal isn't the same as it was in the PS2 era, no doubt. They had this industry by the throat and let an opponent on the ropes come back and an upstart equal their sales last gen. Now there is an option other than Sony and consumers know it. Sony is still the market leader in this industry and no doubt will outsell both the other two this gen. But You don't have to be first to be profitable. If that were true every industry would have only one company operating.

@CloudStrife213 Bar Naughty Dog and Media Molecule, the devs you listed aren't anything special. And you forgot about Santa Monica studios.

Theoretically yes. I have always associated Sony platforms with 3rd party games. If I can find all of them elsewhere, well that's a major selling point lost for Sony. But I'm not touching XBONE so in practice, nothing happend.

Kingdom Hearts has never been on the Xbox, Playstation's primary competitor.

The only Metal Gear Solid game on Xbox is Metal Gear Solid 2, only until recently has Kojima let loose the Metal Gear Solid exclusivity to also be on the Xbox 360 on 2011.

You also have to remember that the reason why a lot of gamers purchased a PS3 over the Xbox 360 is because Metal Gear Solid 4 was an exclusive.

In the context of multiplatform, we are talking about main Metal Gear Solid and Kingdom Hearts games such as Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts 2. Also the Xbox and Playstation. Not the DS, PSP, etc.

Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid 4.

One could expect that these main games would be exclusive to the Playstation, but they are not anymore, they are also being released to the Xbox. The Playstation's primary competitor.

I see the point of view you're coming from. But, I think you're underestimating the fanbase that their 1st party studios have acquired over the past few years, naughty dog in particular. I believe that played a large role in most early buyer's decisions to purchase a PS4 because of the faith that Sony's 1st party will deliver.

Interesting discussion nonetheless, and thanks. Good to see that there are still people on this forum that have objective opinions, instead of fanboy drivel.

Apart from Naughty Dog Sony doesn't have anything more going for than Microsoft. And we don't know what the biggest first party studio by MS, Black Tusk, is capable of. The PlayStation mythology is growing thinner and thinner and I'm loving it. Not because I want Sony to fail but because I hate people blindly believing in mythologies.

Wow! So what's next? R&C games on the X1 later down the lines or is the IP stuck in Sony's licensing?

It's also been on mobile and 2 nintendo handhelds. And don't bullshit about the "main entries" being a sony exclusive because every KH game is considered a main entry, skip one game and you're lost.

Nope the PS4 is still very appealing. Just because the xbone is becoming more appealing doesn't mean that the PS4 is less appealing all of a sudden. The two are mutually exclusive. Not everyone feels like they only have to chose one. My choice is which console I buy first. PS4 still looks like the first console to buy although it looks like I'll be buying an xbone sooner than I thought.

Yes, they used to be the primary name in console gaming. On any TV show, movie, in newspapers, magazines and the general public always said Playstation when referring to video gaming. Now it is mostly Xbox in the west, so it is pretty clear that it has weakened.

Not to mention all the third party games that have gone multiplat, even Japanese devs are releasing games on Xbox and PC now.

To me they were when it came to consoles. MGS was never on the Xbox except for MGS 2. People had an incentive to purchase the PS3 over the Xbox 360 because of MGS. Kingdom Hearts likewise was never on the Xbox, only on PS2, people had an incentive to purchase the PS2 to play Kingdom Hearts.

Are you saying that the handheld versions are the same with the console versions? That is ludicrous. They are different games with the same name. People wanted to experience the console versions.

Say all you want, but losing exclusivity when it comes to a console is a huge deal.

See my point? It is all about incentives when it comes to console choice, especially on different platforms. A lot of gamers take into consideration the exclusives of a console when it comes to choosing the console. Why should I choose this console over the other? Exclusives(Games), features, hardware, online infrastructure.

Exclusives are very influential when it comes to the decision of the gamer as to which console to choose. Losing those is not good as it means that the company has lost an incentive that their console could have only had the chance of having. Meaning consumers have an alternative choice, they can choose the Xbox without losing their beloved Kingdom Hearts Series and Metal Gear Series.
