It's the next gen...which is actually the current gen.

There's always a good amount of hype during that transitiona period when one realizes the end of a console generation and starts ponying up some cash to buy the next gen console.

Expectedly, we look forward to all the genres we know and love to be redesigned, reinnovated, and remade into something much more bigger & better.

Sadly this is not always the case. Some genres make slow progress, and in all honesty, don't differ much from anything we can't experience in last gen games.

So, without further talking, which genre do you feel has made the least strides in terms of innovation and lack that next-gen coat of paint?

Also, this doesn't have to be about comparing last gen games to current gen games-- in general, which genre has evolved the least and feels out-of-time?

My personal vote is sports games.

It's the Law of Nature that those that do not adapt do not survive-- do you see any particular genre dying if it doesn't make necessary modifications?

Racing definately. Please no one say FPS because they've evolved so much since goldeneye.

Define "evolve." Many genres haven't been innovated very highly but have been refined for decades.

Agreed. It's hard to say. Theres reasons why all genres have and haven't 'evolved'

I'm talking about the genres that haven't adapted to the times and feel that you can play the exact same thing in past consoles. I'm talking about genres in which they have made such little improvement in terms of core gameplay mechanics that it may soon be a dying genre because not much has been done with it.

I'd like you to name a genre with examples that hasn't improved or been refined over time.

Sports Games was my pick: each game feels the same as the last with nothing major done to change core concepts.

Compare NHL 09 to any of the last-gen hockey games and see if you feel the same.

Anyway I'd have to go with RPGs, simply because it's such a high-risk, low-reward genre. People are either going to ***** and moan because you're using SPECIAL/AD&D-style gameplay from 10+ years ago, or because you're not using SPECIAL/AD&D-style gameplay from 10 years ago. And even if you do get it right, you're spending a ton of money on a game that has a pretty limited appeal.

EDIT: For those of you saying racing, go track down copies of the original GT and Ridge Racer, and compare those to Forza 2 and PGR 4.

i wish i could vot for me as racing, sports and fighting games have not really evolved. racing games are usually always the same thing, no matter what game ur playing. fighting games are the same except different graphics and new moves. sports games don't becaus they are the same game, just updated rosters of the team. everyonce in a while there will be something new that really isn't needed in the game.

That was hockey games 14 years ago. This is them now:

They have both improved and been refined over the generations. The core gameplay hasn't changed but since when is the core gameplay of a hockey game supposed to change?

I did not say that sports games 14 years ago are in any way similar today-- I said that the genre has had the least improvements. Yes, it has come a long way, but lately it's much of the same.

Perhaps I should ask which genre has had the least innovation thus far this generation?

And as to your point on core gameplay, you are right. I should say gameplay in general then.

FPSes. There were some brave attempts (Crysis, L4D, STALKER), but as a whole the genre not only seems to not be evolving, but actualy devolving, which is just disturbing

If you specify innovation, then definitely RPG's have had the least. They have for the most part, only gone down in quality since last generation. Both Western and Japanese games.

It has to be fighting games. For a while they jumped into 3D with limited success and now most have reverted back to 2D. There is only so much they can do like adding more combos, tag teaming etc.

as a FPS fan FPS games are taking steps back... FOr every step a game like Crysis, Stalker, and Left 4 Dead(yes i did pick the games adrainwerner named) takes forward Each of those games also offsets it with some stupid design choices or steps back of there own.

not true at all. the improvements in physics engine and graphics to increase immersion is outstanding! play GT5 prolog or FOrza 2 and play some old racing game. the difference is huge!

Well..to be honest there are old games(very old...5-6 years old) with better physics... but I guess a jump of real sims to consoles with Forza 1-2 and now Race PRO is a big evolutionary step

Fighting games. FPS is a genre that has evolved, but should have evolved alot more by now. There has been alot of shooters out there....why has no one been able to take the good bits from various shooters and put them into one game???

Vote: Other... Survival Horror.

They got real dumbed-down. The last cool one I played was the Penumbra series on PC, which BTW was VERY cool. But man console SH games have sunk to new lows. Sure, Silent Hill Homecoming was sweet but 1 good game in 3 years is bogus from my favorite genre!

Eh? Fallout 3 and Fable 2 are both fantastic RPGs. I'll just assume youre a JRPG fan, because both those games are very high quality...
