Because it doesn cost $60, so Portal isnt a poor value.
Because the premise of Portal, as a puzzle game, doesnt overextend itself or feel too short.
Because its unique and not just a derivative of the beat-em-ups out there today.
Because it also has pretty decent replay value.
Because you spend all 5 hours playing the game not just watching cutscenes.

surely not the first time unless you watched videoes
It was my first time.[QUOTE="Ontain"][QUOTE="killab2oo5"]>.> I beat Portal in I think...2 hours?Somewhere around there.killab2oo5

It was my first time.impressive, took me about 3. afterwards i watched some vids of the levels i have problems with and saw ppl do them in like 1 min or less. good lord it was like those freaks that play tetris without needing the blocks to show up.

xD I've been wanting to play the maps on advanced but I bought so many games (like 4 or 5) at one time and not enough time to play each. Sooner or later I'll get too it...tried the first map once and it was pretty...o.o intimidating.P.S.-The cake is a lie.

Goes off to cry in a corner.

That is part of the reason.
I take inspiration from valve's crew on how they work. They arn't afraid to write something out if it doesn't work, they want to get peoples opinions on their moments to make sure it works with the masses, and they always have hints twords waht to do, without putting a sign up telling you the obvious on how to do what you need to do. That last part seems tiny but it keeps a pacing of a game flying!
Do you know what most public betas are? It's advratisment to say "Hey, look at our game, you can be part of its making!" then don't actually change anything. Valve when they release betas take loads of reccomendations from the participating community, and release patch after patch to make sure the retail is as stable as it can be.

I did the same around 2 hours without ever seeing the game, it wasnt overly complicated, people told me it was really confusing and hard and within my first sit down with the game i got to test chamber 16 then quit for abit came back and finished it 30 mins later didnt realise it was that short.portal is 3 hours. Heavenly Sword is 5 to 7 hours.
Portal was never presented as a fill flegded game. it's a bonus game on a Disc that is allready bfull of value. Heavenly Sword is 1 game.
Heavenly Sword does not have that much more variety to be honest..., but portal is a puzzle game... and i must say that it is one of the very best games i ever played

no you didn't. good you added the question mark. i doubt you even played it if you say two hours.

Doesn't mean that there aren't fanboys who like to bash HS while forgiving Portal.
Portal and Heavenly Sword have the same playtime. Heavenly Sword has far more variety in gameplay, whereas Portal has you create portals to go room to room...how come Portal gets no #@#! for being so short? Heavenly Sword packed a lot of epicness into a short five hour game and Portal has such little put into a short five hour game? I own Portal AND Heavenly Sword, and frankly while I enjoyed Portal, I don't understand why Portal gets away with being so short.Taalon

Because it's in a game collection. I think it would've cost only $20 if it was a 1 game. But then again, I disprove Orange Box being a nominee because we select a game to be a winner, not a game collection.
portal is only a small puzzle game attached to a package of 5 games .. it's much more value for money
if they released it as a single game, then people would be pretty annoyed unless the price was really low
Portal is great value for money .. just completed it this week, what an amazing experience
also, i see it as a bit of a test for a new gameplay idea .. i expect to see more use of portals in the future in a more substantial game .. maybe half-life episode 3?
People will show you that a puzzle game and a adventure game is different. They expect a long game from a adventure. Little do they know is that what they telling you is also the definition of double standard.
Portal is a puzzle game which is valued at, what, $10 USD?
Heavenly Sword is an adventure game valued at $60 USD.
