The problem in today's gaming world is that the term hardcore is used to describe a certain stile:oops: of playing, which there is no one explanation for.

I've read many definitions of the term hardcore by exploring in individual forums as well as devoting a lot of my time towards reading many rants on system wars.

From my conclusions; I've come to 5 different understandings of the term hardcore:

1- Games that usually consist of the shooter, fighting, (mmo)rpg, action, (action)adventure, and racing genres.

2- Games that usually consist of mature or teen ratings (games with a high level of violence would be a good example to describe this point).

3- Games that require a great amount of one's time inorder to be fully completed. (20 hours+ is the norm).

4- Games that achieve either AA(8.0-8.9) or AAA(9.0-9.9) ratings and consist of point 1 genres. (most common def used in gamespot).

5- Games that consist of high end graphics and amazing artistic detail, (note: some games are labeled hardcore because of this and this alone).

Side note: These observations are not from fanboy based arguments. Observations are only taken from gamespot forums. If you feel that my list is not complete and needs further points feel free to comment; if you feel that my points are false please feel free to comment.

1-Hardcore games cover any genre outside of minigames, sports gamees, and racers(casuals arent exactly afraid of cars or something).
2-Games can be anyrating. How is Banjo, Mario Platformers, Ratchet, Jak not for the hardcore. Please they are way more hardcore than stranglehold.
3-no RE 4 was 15. Halo was like 15. Metroid Prime 3 i beat it within 15. Bioshock 15.
4-No complaints, i think a great game will always get the scores it deserves are there exceptions sure, but most of the time the scores are dead on.
5-No. Its about gameplay and artistic design choice. Graphics dont make a game more hardcore. Metroid Prime3, Zelda TP are not graphically superior to Stranglehold or Motorstorm but are geared toward the hardcore gamer and do a much better job at delivering those experiences.

Simple. If you thrive to play video games (Any, no shape, size or form), you are a hardcore gamer.

you are over generalizing and thinking to hard.

Just think of it this way.

Jimmy Joe is 16 years old. He like to play football and hang out with his friends. He has a PS2 and owns games like Madden, Grand Theft Auto, and a Spiderman game. Jimmy Joe is a casual gamer. He loves to play Halo at his friend's house.

Susy Sam is 16 years old. She likes video games a lot. She has a ps2 and an Xbox. She owns games like Final Fantasy, God of War, Ninja Gaiden, KOTOR, and Halo.

Now there are other types of gamers. Like car nuts. A car nut could simply own a ps2 and Gran Turismo and be all set.

Games like GTA appeal to both casual and hardcore, and that is why they sell like mad.

If you feel the need to justify your hobby by calling it hardcore, you probably aren't.

I agree with you for the most part, except for the fact that many people would question their devotion to gaming if they are not considering gaming more than a hobby, which concludes me to the term hardcore in a general summary. Hardcore= considering gaming more than a hobby. This is oppinion based so please feel free to comment.

Also, I think it should be noted that most anyone who gets within 10 feet of this miserable hole of a forum most likely is, or at one point was, a hardcore gamer.

Very true. I think we can all fully agree that should be considered a fact.

I have my personal view of what a harddcore gamer is;

A person with extensive knowledge of what happens in and out ofthe gaming industry and can analyze and interpret subjects related to gaming in a more indepth manner than others can.

Hardcore Gamer = Elitest Gamer

And an elitest is a douchebag who likes to think he's better than other's who participate in the same hobby as himself.
Hardcore is nothing more than a term Elitests like to use in our community of gaming nerds. Nothing more.

Why not use actual definitions of the word.

Hardcore - as in being dedicated (fits perfectly well for gamers, developers etc.)

Hardcore - as in containing explicit content (fits well for games)

Here's my two cents:

Hardcore game: any game that provides a decent amount of challange, and that somebody could sink considerable time into and feel satisfied in the end. Examples are:

RPGs like the Final Fantasy series, KOTOR, Dragon Quest, Persona, etc.

Shooters which provide some form of originality like Half-Life 1&2, Deus Ex, Battlefield 2, Metroid Prime 3

Sports games that have a deep franchise mode lasting several seasons like Madden (call this series casual all you want, there are some HARDCORE Madden players who could mop the floor with any of you)

Pretty much any strategy game, real time or (esp.) turn-based

The originators of certain genres (GTA, Mario, Zelda, etc.)

Casual game: any game that emphasizes style over substance, includes violence and/or sex for the sake of just having it in the game, is able to sell on the basis of its name alone, or is a copycat of another game aimed at people who can't tell the difference, or does not require a dedicated amount of time to play (this last point can be a good thing if it's intended that way). Examples are:

GTA rip-offs like Scarface, the Godfather, GTA San Andreas (yeah I put it here.)

In relation to the above category, most movie-licensed games fall under the casual umbrella as well.

Games that are intentionally made for people to sit down and enjoy for a short time. The mini-game games fall into this category, and as they're intended that way, this isn't really a bad thing, it's what they're made for. So, games like Wii Sports.

Games in which the devs spent all their budget on graphics and had nothing left over for any sort of lengthy gameplay experience. Heavenly Sword falls under this one.

M-rated games. The games that so many people on here trumpet as being "hardcore". Games like 50-cent Bulletproof, Gears of War, and pretty much any game you can think of that's violent just for the sake of being violent. The games that 13-year old brag to each other about playing because they think it makes them seem "hardcore".
