PS5: GTX 980/4770 CPU/12GB GDDR5 RAM (Shared Memory) Equivalent

Xbox Two: GTX 980ti/5820k/32GB DDR4 RAM Equivalent

Microsoft will make their console more powerful than Sony's after seeing this gen's results.

TL,DR: The PS5 will be like the PS4 when it releases, a piece of sh*t.

What does it matter? Consoles will still reign supreme and PC gamers stay beggars.

MS's console won't be 40-50% less powerful than Sony's system, i think they've learned their lesson.

Sony will out manoeuvre MS again in both hardware design and raw specs as per usual, despite MS having the underpowered box this gen. I see MS doubling down on PC next gen anyway so none of it really matters.

Sure, when PC sales are declining. Good call... Microsoft will focus completely on cloud gaming would be a more acurate statement

Xbox last hope was being ahead as far as online services go. Which sony made up for for years now lol. The PlayStation domination is bound to continue. Unless indirect things happen to the company.

TC is admitting defeat this gen after realizing The Witcher 3 has a lower resolution and worse framerate on Xbone. At least Xbone owners get to enjoy the most cinematic framerate of The Witcher 3.

Still waiting to see if investors/board of directors will continue to fund XBox after this generation. The whole point was to keep Sony from dominating the living room and to build Microsofts brand with youth. They have essentially failed at both missions and even lost market share greatly.

It's far more likely that Microsoft will transition to a Cloud/Service based model. When gamers harpooned them over the licensing scheme with the original plan for XBone, they have to decide between their preferred licensing model for their core business or remain relevant in an increasingly hostile entertainment market.

There's a reason why even Based Phil starts having happy feet on the subject of DRM because at the end of the day, DRM is the life blood of MS, all things XBox aside. You are crazy if you think they'd go through the trouble of making an XBox Two and testing those waters again and the gamers will likely react the same way a second time.

As for Sony, it's very simple to predict what they will do. They're going to see the dust settle on whether the console market wants VR or not and adjust accordingly. They're either going to make a $400 box that will push 4K gaming or they will make a $400 box that sufficiently pushes 4K while supporting higher capacity for VR with the necessary peripherals as well as a revamped online platform like Home to push that model with.

Hopefully the PS5 and Xbox "X" won't exist, survival of the fittest and all that. Console hardware can't keep up anymore and turn a profit at the same time. MS seems to be reallocating their eggs into the PC basket. Xbox may become a large fragmented software based platform, Sony and Nintendo can slug at each other for the carcass of console gaming. If they do come to fruition:

PS5: Far more powerful than current PC hardware (with exception of workstation class CPU's)

Xbox: Similar, unless they jump the gun.

I would expect the next gen platforms to manage current generation games at 4k 60 FPS Ultra, so far ahead of any single or maybe even double GPU config.

I predict Microsoft will exit the console business, because Satya Nadella is trimming all the waste from Microsoft.

PS5 will probably be download only, with cloud gaming being a big part of it. It should have a powerful cpu, and moderately powered GPU, though.

Way to early to speculate. Judging by where these consoles are now thoughost don't expect anything crazy in terms of power. They will now be putting top of the line hardware in them anymore. That died with the xbox 360 and ps3. Expect decent mid tier to low end hardware like we got this time. So if they started building today with what is available right now you are looking at something on the lines of a 960 or 970 probably between the two. I'm interested to see how they will address the cpublic design. Will they continue to throw everything into the gpu or come with a more balanced design?

But like I said this is way too early. The hardware that will be in the next-gen of consoles isn't even out yet.

for the same reason they have ancient hardware right now. This is just how they roll. And beside, Intel has become lazy as hell and Nvidia has been releasing old cards but re-branded under new numeration for the past few years. Tech is not progressing as steadily as before.

Based on benchmarks the GTX 980 has like over 3 times the power of the GPU in the PS4, so it is a pretty significant jump anyway.

@Gue1: not really a significant jump seeing how the ps4 is roughly 10 times more powerful than ps3. Although a 980ti should be more than 3 times more powerful than a ps4. Probably closers to 5 honestly . Not a big enough jump still imo

the entire PS4 is 1.8 Tflops and the GTX 980 alone is 5 Tflops. That's a pretty big jump.

Doubt the jump from PS3 to PS4 is that big considering that the Cell is more powerful than the current CPU in the PS4. The PS3 was like 400 flops at peak performance which would make the PS4's jump 4 to 5 times bigger.

Considering that the OG Xbox was orders of magnitude more powerful than the PS2, and the PS3 was so difficult to code for that despite being slightly more powerful than the 360 on paper, most multiplats were the same or worse on it, your comment doesn't make any sense.

This is the only generation where the Sony console is unquestionably more powerful.

They didn't have much ancient hardware at launch. PS4 working with something along the lines of a 7870(which was released in 2012),so 2 years old tech. The 980 was released a year ago and we probably won't see new consoles until 3-4 years...which would make it 4-5 years old hardware

The Xbox also came out a year after the PS2, so Microsoft already had some idea of it's hardware ahead of time.

Way too early for that.

Odds are they will be looking into future mobile GPUs to save on power consumption and heat. Same with their CPUs. We're seeing another big push of mobile CPUs so by the time the next wave of consoles does come out, they'll most likely be going with a mobile CPU again to keep the power and heat down.

With the emphasis on mobile processing it'll be interesting to see how technology both on a hardware and software levels changes. We may be able to get a lot more life out of less RAM than before depending on how technology plays out.

Large solid state drives may also be very inexpensive too. So we would probably see solid state driven devices in the future. The consoles may not even come with a disk drive.

Again, too early to tell. We're only 2 years into what's going to be a 5-7 year console generation.

No way in hell PS5/Two are having closed 980's with possible beefy Cpus on top. It would be pretty disastrous for air flow and energy consumption. Unless Sony managed a breakthrough in the future to find going that route viable and profitable, then ok. But for manufacturing costs-sake...I really doubt they will go with beefy GPU and CPU. Even though 960's will be cheaper by 2019, I STILL doubt Sony will amp up in processing power by that much. One of the PS4's key successes was cutting down manufacturing costs significantly and being profitable in its first year on the market right off the bat. I imagine Sony will want to undoubtedly follow suit.

If I had to guess, putting console optimization at the forefront, I would say toned down 960's with a 2.0 to 2.3 Ghz Cpu and 12 GB of GDDR5 Ram will be sufficient to have near The Order 1886 graphics on a sandbox/open world game. With full 1080p and locked 30 Fps being the standard. Some crazy developers will certainly go overboard with almost 4k gaming and stuttering 30 fps though.

If we can aim for complete 1080p and locked 60fps and have MGS5 graphics with better AF, better landscape rendering, better dynamic lighting, extensively improved physics and un-pixelated shadows...that's a substantial leap for me for "next-gen".

@MonsieurX:

the PS4's GPU equivalent it's the 7870 but with 2 CU's disabled and slightly underclocked, which makes it closer to the HD 7850 to be exact. And while it was "new tech" in 2012 based on transistor reduction and arquitecture, its raw performance was comparable to much more older cards. I mean, there were cards pushing over 1 Tflop since like 2007 according to Wikipedia.

So it's obvious that by the time the next gen consoles drop there will be enhancements to the architecture and stuff but I doubt the raw performance will go beyond 5 Tflops for $400 by 2018-2020, which would be comparable to a gtx 980.

Another thing to remember is that console makers have to take this shit:

And make it this small to be able to put it in a console:

MS has a tendency to overreact to market conditions. Whatever trend that they think will help sell their product. They have no problem going "all in" if you will.

MS saw that the XB360 kinect was received well, and so they doubled down on it, and bundled it with every XB1 at launch.

MS realized that online gaming was a huge thing going forward with the OG Xbox, so they built 360 based around that.

You can also see it with things like the nfl deal, and minecraft. If MS thinks it will sell, then they will spend the resources to make it happen.

With this generation being all about power, I suspect that MS will go all in on the next Xbox as well. If MS puts their sights on having more power in their next console, there is really no way Sony can compete. MS will spend (or lose) whatever it takes to have the more powerful console next gen if that's what they think will help sell the xbox.
