The games are not in order, so I'm not saying, for example, that MGS is better than Splinter Cell. However, I AM saying that both MGS and Splinter Cell are better than, for example, Hit-man, or Aliens vs. Predator.

The Very Best Stealth Games

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty / Substance

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence

Deus Ex

Splinter Cell

Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow (& multi-player)

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory (& multi-player)

Splinter Cell Double Agent (& multi-player)

Thief: The Dark Project

Thief II: The Metal Age

Truly Excellent Stealth Games

No One Lives Forever 2

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay

Aliens versus Predator (shoot-em-up campaign + stealth campaign)

Aliens versus Predator 2 (shoot-em-up campaign + stealth campaign)

Beyond Good and Evil

Thief: Deadly Shadows

H i t m a n 2 : S i l e n t A s s a s i n

H i t m a n : B l o o d M o n e y

Sly 2: Band of Thieves

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes

Commandos 2: Men of Courage

Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus

Some Fairly Good Stealth Games

Manhunt

Hitman: Contracts

Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus

Sly Cooper 3: Honor among Thieves

Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven (PS2) or

Tenchu: Return from Darkness (XBOX)

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines

Commandos: Beyond the Call of Duty

Oddworld: Abe's Oddyssey

all and any feedback and/or flaming is welcome and greatly appreciated!

If those aredirectly in descending order I'm going to have to disagree with you and put Splinter Cell's stealth mechanics above MGS's....but that's just me though.

SS2 isn't really a stealth game. It has some stealth elements, but it's not the main focus of the game.

Not to say it isn't an awesome game, however.

Roughly...1/3rd or so of Call of Juarez was stealth-based (Billy wasn't even allowed to kill human enemies until just before the train bit).

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysey/Exoddus (deliberately misspelled, afaik) were truly amazing 2D 'stealth'-based platformers.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic can also be played stealthily, as can Bioshock and Vampire: Bloodlines (about as much as Deus Ex can, anyway, and that's on the list).

FarCry might deserve a mention, too, as stealth is fairly vital element of the gameplay.

The only games that deserve to be in the "top-of-the-top" are the first two Thief games. Saying that Splinter Cell and MGS games are equal in terms of stealth to those two games is laughable at best. It's a great list... just a bit out of proper order.

I'm sorry, but you rate SPlinter Cell 2 and 4 or especialy MGS 2-3 higher than Hitman 2 and 4 or Commandos 1-2 as a stealth games? That is just wrong.

maybe because the stealth in those sucks like hell compared to Hitman and Commandos 1-2? MGS is simply weak stealth game. One might consider it better game series, but the stealth in MGS is weak as hell compared Commandos or Hitman and grouping MGS with THief is just ridiculus. It's almost like throwing Mario Kart into sim category

I am not comparing the quality and intricacy ofthe stealth aspects in specific. Rather, I'm comparing the quality of the games under question as a whole, so long as the games under question have a very significant stealth aspect.

the damn game created the genre of stealth games.

DedParrot
MGS:TTS didn't create the stealth action genre. I believe that title belongs to the very first Metal Gear on the MSX, though it and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake were obviously nowhere near as popular as Metal Gear Solid.

Castle Wolfenstein (releasedaround 1981) was the first stealth-oriented game, but seriously, who cares? Why does it matter who did it first? OK, it was groundbreaking for its time, but what's the use of discussing it now, when the third sequel is about to come out? BTW, the first Tenchu game came out BEFORE the original MGS.
