This past weekend, Compete hosted several Street Fighter pros and commentators at our offices for a public event where fans could sign up to battle against top SFV players. Since we had this all-star roster of Street Fighteraficionados hanging out at our offices, the Compete staff pulled them aside to preview the Nintendo Switch version of Ultra Street Fighter II, which won’t be released to the public until May 26. They liked it.

Starting to sound really good. You know if the pros are feeling it, Capcom did something right. These people are extremely picky when it comes to these fighting games. The game is based off the Street Fighter II Turbo edition, which is considered the best edition in fighting. Its also the edition i was raised on when i was a child. Should bring back some pretty fun memories from back in the day.

They also compared the Joy-Con setup to arcade sticks. And although they stated they preferred 6-face buttons, they believed the Joy-Cons made it easier to execute their moves. One player, Patrick “DaFeetLee” Lee, even stated, “I’m getting all my DPs, which I never get in Super Turbo!” But the most important question of all: is Violent Ken broken? “He’s really good,” Lee laughed. “He’s really, really good.”

Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers releases exclusively for Switch May 26.

The joycons were easier than an arcade stick? That's hard to imagine.

@lrdfancypants: To pull off moves they say. I also forgot to add they recommend Pro Controller. Justin Wong is a professional and old school player and he recommend the Pro, but stated Joy-Cons were cool too.

But Switch has no d-pad :0

Also capcom should lay off with the rereleases and invest in some new games if they truly want to make some money.

@R4gn4r0k: Strangely none of the pros had any concern about the missing d-pad. Guess its a none factor. These are old school and new age pros too.

Not even remotely what was said in the article lol

“I think the game plays really well on [the Switch],” Wong elaborated, “But with these Joy-Cons, it’s really hard to play Street Fighter. It’s a six-button game.” The Joy-Con shoulder buttons in particular are “really hard buttons,” but according to Wong, the four face buttons are “really responsive and easy to do.” Wong hadn’t yet had the chance to try the Nintendo Switch fight stick, but he did put in a recommendation for the Switch Pro Controller as his current go-to for the system.

No, no! No I don't believe it!

If I'm gonna play Street Fighter, I need my Arcade Sticks but if it's unavailable, give me a PS Controller any day.

@iandizion713:

The pro controller looks fine.

The joycons I have reservations about in general.

They're so small. Smaller than I expected. I went to buy a switch one day (mission failed, there were none) but they had the joycons. I have big hands and I doubt I could use these things outside of attached in portable mode.

I quoted what the dude stated. He said it was easier for him to preform his moves. Wong who is an old school pro also stated it was easy with the Joy-Cons.

The Joy-Con Strap can help with that.

Wong also hasn't played the game with an arcade stick (seeing as he hasn't touched it on a switch stick), which is going to be the ideal way to play a fighter regardless.

It's probably the best version of what is still considered (one of?) the best fighting game of all time?

Or not? I don't know my fighting games.

You still should have quoted the whole thing, because you made it seem like he enjoyed the joycon more than he did. He had complaints with the shoulder buttons.

That's how fake news gets started. You intentionally left out bits of information you didn't agree with. Or you did it on accident, but the result is still the same.

The FULL Quote from Wong:

"

After his win, Wong commented that the Switch screen setup with the two Joy-Con controllers was “very convenient,” even though the two bumpers on the Joy-Con made moves “hard to get right.”

Quote from Lee

He echoed Wong’s concerns about the Joy-Con controllers, saying he longed for the “six face buttons” that a stick would provide, but that he found the moves to be easier to execute in this version: “I’m getting all my DPs, which I never get in Super Turbo!”

So there were mixed feelings on the joycons. I fixed your Fake News for you.

If dudes landing DPs more consistently than he did in classic ST then it could just mean that Capcom added input shortcuts. Instead of having to input a perfect > v >, you can just ride the diagonals and down, never making the full motion. So with numpad notation you'd be able to get away with 3-2-3 (at minimum) instead of having to go all the way between 6-2-6.

Which hey, I'd be cool with that as that's how most modern fighting games handle it. Always feels weird going back to the more rigid style (even if it does help build good execution habits.)

Of course it is. On the one hand, OP tried to paint a more positive picture of it. On the other hand, of course these dudes will say nice things. Sponsored players who make their living primarily off of playing Capcom fighters.

I'm just enjoying the irony here. OP is quick to say "The pros, the pros!", but then he also calls HD Remix a shit game in other threads... even though that game was also endorsed by pros up front, was developed under the guidance of a former pro player, and was play tested/balanced by various pros. lol.

Analogs have circular gates dudes. Arcade sticks come with square gates and some people go for octo gates. These allow for directional precision that a circle gate analog doesn't account for. They also have microswitches that give you direct feedback via a click so you can hear and feel the precise moment you've crossed a direction.

No, an analog isn't going to control "tighter" for a fighting game lmao.

Even the great fighting game players who do use controllers use the d-pad for the same reasons. Directional accuracy and awareness. Analog sticks are garbage for these games.

@iandizion713 said:

Actually, he never said that. The article states this:

but that he found the moves to be easier to execute in this version: “I’m getting all my DPs, which I never get in Super Turbo!”

Which is more than likely a matter of input shortcuts finally making their way to SF2.
