Interesting, a developer of the game says that DVD is limiting. Also, Blue Dragon was on 3 discs.
Is DVD9 already out of date? A whole new aspect of gaming now is gone.

Teh DVD-9 has owned the lemmings.
Don't have to worry about that type of problem with the PS3 and Blu-Ray

No all you have to worry about there is game insalls due to the slow blue ray rate and managing your Hdd space. I feel sorry for anyone that got the discontinued 20GB model.
Yea, DVD9 is reaching its limit. I would like to see night/day in PGR4, but atleast the devs got around the issue.. sort of..

Why? Replacing a PS3 harddrive is easy as pie. You just take it out and put the new one in then format it..

Why? For less then 100 bucks they can go up to 160GB
Textures dont take up very much room....
and unless they are using baked textures I dont see the problem.... why not just change the HDRI

DVD is a bit limiting, but with some creative programming, they circumvented this problem by using different lighting models (which is what I was wondering they would do, after all, day and night are just different lights)billyea
That is true, they could also allow you to HDD cache which makes load times go alot lower. PC games and PS3 games run pretty quick using HDD cache.

Most 360 games take advantage of this which is why people with the core experience alot of chopyness.Unlike Sony the MS didnt decide to push a HD format that could easily flop.Ouch lemmings, real ouch. That sucks. More proof that MS should have used HD-DVD for their games, could have saved them the trouble of making games multidisc.

You're not the developer.
No but i have more than adequate experiance in Maya and 3ds max to question why than cant change the HDRI they are using. If a built-in HDDVD drive in the launch 360 means that I would have had to pay $599 to play next gen video games...than I definitly applaud MS's decision to stick to dvd-9. Personally, day/night cycle is not worth the money....and it appears that other games (Mass Effect, Oblivion, Just Cause) can get much more value out of the dvd-9 thanthe pgr4 developers can.
If I spent all my time gaming, than I would probably care a little bit.

The Elite should have had HD-DVD, but that is my opinion.
Not DVDs fault that they were trying to fit twice as many textures they actually needed, I mean why the hell would you have to create different day/night textures?thirstychainsaw
More realistic feel? I am guessing they wanted to make it realistic as possible.
I just made the topic because this issue might not just happen to PGR4, Rockstar also complained about trying to cram GTAIV into DVD9.
Maybe Microsoft needs to make the HDD required for gaming to get the most content out of it. Since Oblivion uses HDD to do Shivering Isles.

And than are the going to have HD-DVD specific games? On one hand, if they didn't have HD-DVD specific games than there wouldn't be as much as an incentive (Elite with HD-DVD would obviously be more expensive than Elite without HD-DVD). On the other hand, if you do release a 3rd sku AFTER launch that gets HD-DVD specific games, than you are going to piss off about 10 million gamers...which can't be considered a good move.
If Biowars can fit Mass effect on 1 DVD then the PGR devs are just lazy, The PGR3 demo have almost no content and was 1.3GB, there are plenty of demos with better graphics and more content that have fitted in to smaller downloads.Marka1700If a dev cant fit something on one disc why does it always have to be the 'lazy devs' problem?
Well the lemmings got owned by one of their top exclusives. Even if they do squeeze a game onto DVD9 you have no idea the kinds of things like this they probably had to cut. And even if they fit everything they want the scope of the game had to be limited to fit the disc. I mean for christs sake a racing game is having to cut features already. Gears2 is probably going to have like 4 levels. Haha that reminds me of the extra 5 levels on the PC Gears of War... probably were all intended to be in the 360 version.

Well, they could have HD-DVD extra content so if people wanted to get that version.
Mainly due to HD-DVD would have boosted Elite sales alot more than it did. 80 bucks for 1.2 HDMI and some more GB seems not worth the value.

Why not just release the content to xboxlive? I think it would be pretty confusing to ask consumers to go out and choose between two versions of the same game...people already complain about multiple sku's....this would just make matters worse. And on top of that, developers would be have to roll out two versions of every game? I don't think day/night cycle is worth that.
Releasing content on xbox live sounds like the obvious answer to me for most content that couldn't normally fit on a disc.
And when you break it down...the Elite is a great deal. The HDMI cable is included, unlike with the ps3....and quality HDMI cables can be quite expensive. Also, 120 gb is pretty big...i'd say it's a pretty fair deal. It's not a system that is for the average gamer...or even the hardcore gamer. It's for people wanting to take advantage of the HD movies that MS has for download.

You know they can easily upgrade the HDD without having to fork out $179 dollars?

How can a HDMI cable outweigh HD (Blu-ray) movie playback? hahaha....seriously...the PS3 has HD (Blu-ray) movie playback unlike the Elite. Not to mention Blu-ray also benefits GAMES.

Do me a favor and show me where I said HDMI cable outweigh's bluray movie playback? Of course a friggin cable doesn't outweight a next generation disc. All I said was that the HDMI is included with the Elite, and it's not with the PS3. If you want to make my comment into something more than that, than it's on you...not me.
Dvd will handcuff the 360 in the future and it will only get worse but it's not like ms could wait for hd-dvd or it would have launched with the ps3 and wii then get killed.I have yet to see one dev say we don't like/want the extra space blu-ray offers anywhere, so far they all love it but devs seems to be hitting the limits of dvd hard. GTA is having a hard time on the 360 with dvd already for example.BrooklynBomber
It doesn't seem to be working though. Both the 360 and the wii...both dvd-9 systems are easily outselling the ps3. Casual gaming is on the rise (reference wii's sales and even today's gamespot headline) and I really don't think casual's are going to care much about the extra space.

And as for blue dragon; the whole game world is on every disc. It is only split up because of huge FMV taking up so much space.

The wii is a cheap sdtv console with pro logic soundwith no real massive oblivion type games or games that use alot of voice acting like the 360.

Truth is HD FVM is the only reason BluRay is "needed" and even then it's not needed, but a nice to have so you won't have to swap discs. but then again, HD FMV really isn't needed to play a game either. I guess those that like to watch the game instead of playing it would prefer HD FMV, but not me....I like playing.
