"TOKYO--Sales of the almost 7-year-old PlayStation 2 beat those of the brand-new PlayStation 3 in Japan in late January for the first time, according to sales figures published today.

For the week of January 22 to January 28, sales of the PlayStation 2 totaled 20,995 units while those of the PlayStation 3 were 19,996, said Media Create. The research company receives data from around 3000 stores across Japan and uses that to estimate nationwide sales."

 


I'm sure nearly all of us have the same heritage of playing the PS2 and have loved it at some point in our lives.  It'd be funny if the PS3 totally flopped and Sony had ta carry on making PS2 games.  That would be humbling.

im buying a ps2 i dont care if its old , theres some really awosome games on that system, i want to play DMC3 and MGS3

It's still going strong. There are many superb games still to come and plenty of excellent titles from the past few months.

MGs3 is impossible to find they stopped making it and the Servers will be **** within the month. Anyway The PS2 had a **** launch too (BESIDES JAPAN) just wait for some actual games to come out... The Wii Currently has NO games besides Zelda and Wii Sports.....agian launch period is harsh on gamers

yes indeed but who cares i can still play all my  ps2 games on my ps3 :D. all in one baby!! yes i sold my ps2 :( i will miss it with all my heart..

PS1 outsold PS2 for months after its launch.  Its nothing new and proves nothing.

I just sold my PS2 :( (Slimline) I have the fatty but it doesnt work and i dont wanna throw it out just yet....

i dont understand, SOny is still making money on last gen console. Unlike MS where they just said screw xbox 1 , lets just jump on the 360.

Depends on availability also, the ps2 remains to be popular as its widely available, cheap, and has loads of top quality games on it. If there isnt enough ps3s available to keep up with the demand for it (i dont know if this is true or not at this time i dont know the facts, just a thought) then obviously its not going to sell more.

The comparison on this topic is between the PS2 and the PS3.  The other systems have advanced and delivered on their promises.  The PS2 as it is, is a great system.  It has harnessed its technology and online play to as much as it can.  But lets not forget that even though it was the most powerfull system of its time, it didnt have any online play and had a great big Harddrive hole.  The PS3 is another "it might do this in the future"............

PS2 is a great system. PS3 is a great system. PS3 will easily be swapping places with the WIi and DS for 1st and 2nd place once it picks up more steam.
