PS3 $200 price drop end of month? From circuit city.

So I was at Circuit City today and I overheard two employees talking about video games. The one was the store manager and we talking to another manager and he said and i'm quoting here "The PS3 is getting a price drop at the end of the month of $200." He then went on about how they're dropping the price because it can't compete with the 360 and the Wii. Then they start saying how no one would buy 360's if the PS3 was $399.

If Sony wants a significant market share a $100 price drop would help them a lot, especially a $200 one, but I don't think they need to drop the price until spring of '08. As soon as they drop the price though I think Microsoft will drop theirs as well. I don't think any system ever had a price drop in the first 7 months it was out, let alone $200 in the first 2 years. So if you're planning on getting a PS3, wait til the end of the month and see if this is true...if it is you save some money.

Now like I said I heard this with my own two ears...and I even asked the manager if that was true and he said "according to corporate it is"...I guess we'll find out if it's true or not...but I know what I heard them say....

my 360 just broke and i would seriously start thinking about getting a ps3.

I'm hoping it's true. Desperate times unfortunately call for desperate measures -- sales are at an all time low, as a result third party exclusives are dropping like flies, public opinion of the console is generally terrible (although that varies from area to area) and the gap between the PS3 and the Wii is widening every day. I honestly don't think a $200 cut is that surprising considering the circumstances.

That would be awesome. If it is true, though, that moronic manager should be fired considering such sensitive information shouldn't be discussed on the store's floor.

I know. this rumor better be true, because the expectations of everyone on the fence has just been raised. Now, if Sony drops the price by $100 everyone will be disappointed because their expectaions were too high. Its kind of a touch position for Sony to be in.

Yeah but I don't have that much money. I can't justify paying even more for ANOTHER game system.

and all the games I want that are on 360 are either on PC or PS3 as well, and I have a gaming PC. As soon as I get bored of GeOWs online I'll sell it for a PS3. IF it s 200 less that is. :P

I know that , but he did bring up good points. The removal of the EE chip definatly saved them a bunch of money. Plus, the last time we heard about the PS3 manufacturing cost was before its launch, so it definatly must be lower now, but the question is.. Whats the manufacturing cost now? :P My guess is about 650$

I wouldn't hold my breath for a price drop announcement. A price drop is something companies spring on the consumers rather than announce ahead of time. Wouldn't make much sense to purchase something when a rebate is on the horizon, now would it? It might get leaked, though.

i wouldn't say $650. i'd say a more realistic number would be $750 or the lowest, $700. the EE cost $27. the bd drive cost $125 to make (now probably around $75 after the lower maufacturing cost). the RSX is still the most expensive single component at $129.

that's about $77 taken off the manufacturing price so, imo, the production cost is $763.35. could be lower if they managed to lower the production cost of the RSX and the Cell BE.

So, according to that, the Blu-Ray diodes are not the reason the ps3 costs $600. Take it away, and the manufacturing costs of the ps3 were still around $725.

Also, since the price of Blu-Ray diodes was expected to drop to about $8 each by June, the fact that Sony removed the $27 EE+GS from every ps3, and the fact that the general costs of the ps3 hardware is dropping, that already puts them at or below $700 on every 60gb ps3 manufactured.

If they still outsource production of the Cell to China like they've said the would in the past, and they start producing them on 65nm diees instead of 90nm dies, that would drop the price even further. Outsourcing of the Cell anda price drop could be announced at E3, imo.

graphics chips drop prices drop pretty fast. When the 8800 GTX launched couple months back it was $650. You can find it for $500 bucks pretty easily now. My guess is that the RSX costs about 80 bucks now.
